Amalgamated Copper Lead in the
Upward Movemen t United
States Steel Unsettled.
New York. May 13. The stock market
mado some stand agalnxt depression to
day and early In the day some recovery
was effected from yesterday's rharp de
clines. The firmness was helped by some
light buying for foreign account. London
continuing to show a wholesome tone,
with a declining money market.
The news over night of tho fixing of tho
amount of tho New York Central debenture-bond
Issue at $$0,OW,000 instead of
C0.000.0O), as was understood yesterday,
was not stimulating to tho general mar
ket, pwirjp to tho Inroads upon money re
sources Indicated. Tho trunk-Hao stocks
renerally were probably affected to some
extent by the threatened tie-up of lake
traffic, owln tb tho dispute between the
Masters and Klots Association and tho
Lake Carriers' Association.
GOLD DHATN.
The arrival In San Francisco of a con
signment of J2.250.009. which may be Im
mediately available to New York banks
by telegraphic transfer, promised allevia
tion from the gold drain. The closing of
subscriptions to tho Japanese loan aid tho
prospect of early allotment will probably
put a stop to the Japanese gold Imports.
The 2-point rise In Amalgamated Copper
had Borne sentimental effect la sustaining
the early market, although It had no ex
planation beyond the usual vague rumors
of a settlement of litigation of copper In
terests. United 8tates Bteel preferred also got
nearly a point over last night's level. But
the pressure was renewed upon tho Uni
ted States Steel stocks as tho day pro
gressed. Tho volume and mystery of tho
source of this selling were a very unset
tling influence and seemed to be regarded
as a portent by tho usual operators in tho
market.
CURRENCY MOVEMENT.
The forecast of the week's currency
movement made a less formidable show
ing than was Reared In view of tho enor
mous gold movement of the week. Large
receipts from tho interior have been a
partial offset, and the gold to go by to
morrow's steamer does not figure In the
estimate and will not In the weekly bank
statement.
The weakness of the United State steel
stocks carried the whole market off in the
later trading and made net losses on the
day.
Bonds were dull and about Rteadv. To
tal sales, par value. M.S0O.0O0. United
States bonds were unchanged en call.

In yesterday's jocal grain market tha general tendency of future values was
downward. May wheat waa the only strong spot and the advance of that option was
based on purely speculativo conditions caused by the approach of the expiration of
contracts. Legitimate conditions affecting prices were nearly all bearish. There was
llttlo improvement In the foreign situation so far as a demapd for Amerlrtln bread
stuffs was concerned, and it was predicted that the shipments of wheat from other
countries to Europe would be even larger than Tor the preceding week. Weather con
ditions wero favorable In nearly all sections of the winter belt "and receipts wero
sufllcient to supply the Immediate demands of cash purchasers. One of the depress
ing factors waa an almost total lack of outsldo buying demand. Liquidation was
rather free throughout tho session and It was apparent that some of the offerings
camo from big operators here and in Chicago. Shorts did not seem afraid to further
ease their lines la the absence of speculativo Interest, Tho fluctuations wero within
a rango of llttlo more than half a cent and tha closo was only a trifle above the low
point for tho day.
Some improvement In the receipts and prospects of clear, dry weather caused a
modcrato liquidation in corn. Trading was light, with sentiment generally bearish.
