I'ronta and Eain or Ehine. both laid up from their fall, arc the only absentees. It Is tho best Held seen at Union this year, and probably the tefct Held seen at St. LouU In this season. Looking at the race and knowing the hors(Ss Intimately. The Republic picks Ke- Jiova to tUti its handicap, providing that a competent boy rides her. She cannot win with Jockey Wapshire up. With some fair boy n her, she probably will win. She Is about right and toukl have beaten Xorrl Kermence easily with a good rider up last time they mot, and rtie should win to-day. ns sho is takins off nine pounds on that race. She looks well and Is a 1:10 mare any time she is right. Tills looks like the right spot to cut her Ioo?c. Hrbe will be second if he sets a Eood ride. This Is a good horse end at his test now. His last three races liavo leen brilliant. He should have beaten 1L T. Tarpey last time they met. Tho dis tance to-day is his to a hair. Artfmosity should be third. She is good nnd fast and likes a route. Jiter race with Erbe and Tarper l,rlnss her rlpht vo to Erbe. W. E. Gates has an undeniable chance, but likes a mnddy track best. Still, he is a jrood old horSe. eo strong and saliact that he must nsver sneer ana Kusja do not the betljng will be watched closely on this race. Of court!. thU forecast Is made upon th basis of a. fast track. Should it rain, necessary allowance must be made. be overlooked, class. Tho llessenper. Is asked to do a srent deal, but ho is wearing the medals and must ba, given a good chance, especially as Bo land, will be on him. UgrLe Duo lias a chancer but will go to estler game fci the first event, where he should win. Tarpey Is at The Messenger's mercy, .Macbeth' spefed will clear him of the field, but there "Is speed to go with him. and Animosity Scan beat him at the weijhts. Palm Header it said to be a bit lame from poor plating, but is a good colt and will have a chance, though given the worst of tho weights. He Is the classie3t of the lot. Xabor.ls uncertain, and. as he Is a slow beginner, he should be worried by the big fleld. However, if he rens back to the race beore his last he has a fine chance Still, cutting a rider on Kenova. The Kepuhlie Handicap should go to her. In the first race Bar Le Duo looks best If he has Eoland or tome Bood rider up. He needs a strong and epod bev on his back. Cheny will be right there. Ho is a horse of some class and hU race yesterday was a mere "prep." Ora. SIcKlnney ran n fine race from u bad start last time out and should be third. Lecli. JJfda and Scarborough have outside chances. v Lord Hermcnce looks best In the second. It Is his distance and the weight will suit him. Budwel?er should be second, as bis speed will stand to him. George W.'s last race "was. good and he should be third. Paul "Woalcy has the class and the speed In the third and should gallop. Booraerack cannot win with an even break at tho freights. His rpecd at tho start will help lilm If he gets a running break. Ilia last race was bad, .due to lack of care of his trainer, who has been discharged since that race. Bluish should be third If'he trees. In case he does not,- Hilarity will show. , Duelist looks- belt in the fifth, though "Ernbry tray take it away from- him In speed. If Embry can outrun him they will both Etop. and El Gr-or may win. Ghor's last race wan bad. He is a snlker, but may go better to-dar. Handlcapper Magjnn has ar ranged a card of seven races for Delinar to-day. In th chief event of the- after noon. Charley Thompson, from the Trotter Stable, will likely divide favoritism with Eight Opera. One of tho best-known bookmakers at the Delmar traclr prepared a list of pos sible odds on thw event yesterday, and believes that 3 to 1 will be about the price laid against Thomron and Eight Opera, with the betting in favor of Thompson. ThU looks like a Eood price against Trot ter's consistent horse, although he la sup posed to liko a mllo route better than the mile and one-sixteenth, and prefers to run by himself in front without contention rather than to liate early pace-setters with him. Plenty of early speed U in this event to carry him on his way, and this may hurt his chancers. Eight Opera ran a good race for a first out in his last start. He Is in good trim and should get second money, at least, for tho Eemo Stable. Bugler ran a great race In toe Mound Cty Derby, but track conditions and tho field were of different order, since Eainland has dropped out It looks as If Uugier should get third place, however. Odds cf 4 to 1. probably will ba laid against lilm. Lucl:tn may tirovo a disturbing element bV Settlnc H first Mrlv mrv vhlnri Htl I beat o!X Thompson. Fatallit ran a gooii 4, uic .njuiucu iimugurai at tne rxir Grounds, and Is making his first start at Delmar to-day. He may be close up at 4.1.U truu. It Is an evenly balanced field, nil in nil. Thompson has been winning right along; and It is not a bad policy to stick to win ners. So he must be chosen to beat Eight Opera and Bugler. In the second race Princess Orna and Joo Keller will meet again. Botli are good t'-year-olds. and tho Haves nily has won both her local starts. Joe Kelley hit one or those soft spots on the straight at Delmar and stopped suddcnlv. Tho Ehock may havo hurt the colt, and It looks safer to pick Princess Orna to-day. elasauez has been getting cloe up In some of his starts, but stumbled In his last race ana uropDea out or It. He may win tho third to-day, if tho distance Is to his liking. Pathos and Hickory Corners look to bo the contenders. Orient's speed should help her at six furlongs. She set a terrlSe nam br last out. In a seven-furlong event, but did not lulto lat. the more especially as a front runner like Kindred was In to help her burp up the early stages of tho race. Elastic la said to be frsh and good and may get second money from Claremont, who showed rathsr bad form his last out. Vulcain would haye played with his field a year ago. But form must be sized up on his merits of to-day and not of a twelvemonth since. Xath Woodcock ran aopd raro his last out. v. hen ho beat Hncena and finished a gocl second to The Hobby, but the Flow early pace probably enabled him to lat rs Ion? as he did. Exapo's race or jesterday was some what marred by the position In which he found himself at tho first turn, and it looks ns if he should do better to-day. Exapo. Tickful nnd Xath Woodcock seem the logical choices. In the last race at least hnlf a dozen hotsea have a chance. Old Echodalo would bo greatly Lenetlted "by any 100151005 on the track, but It looks as If Radium could beat him, even then. One More has shown so much speed that he must le considered, and Floral Wreath looks well Tor third place. T . I HORSES. WEIGHTS I Ifd) AND JOCKEYS. (3. 103 IS M T4 H M 13 VH pll!"-k. 1. Stova.... Lasso mado It tliree straight at Delmar yesterday when sho gallcped away, with tho fifth race, leaving her field to come in straggling behind at varying distances. Opening In the betting at 1 to J. tha Lemp maro was sufficiently well played to close at 2 to 5. This looked a trifle, tight before the race, but sho won like a, l-to-10 shot. Shooting to the front in the first sixteenth, after getting off none too well, she had a dozen lengths of advantage over her nearest competitor at one stage. McMuIl-n let up In the stretch, but his mount won with an ease- that was ridic ulous. Just the same. Xoweta. who has always shown a faculty for running sec ond, got place money after running a fair sort of race her elf. Hucena won the last race in easy fash Ion also. Tho Einstein mare laid back In the early stages, made her run after pass ing tho stable turn and fairly shot by her held when once set down. She came home, alone. Both Hucena and Lasso were tipped to win by The Republic. In the rirst event. Curd Glllock evidently bethought himself of tho das of his youth, when he was voting and limber, and ueciuea to run in nti oui-time form, lie had tho speed of his party, but was lucky to win at that. Old John II. from the Flier stable, had hard racing luck, or hn would hate given tho first horse a strong- Dame. Arlena won the second race at S to 1. Tho Ally waa making her second start, and had Improved speed over bcr previous and only out. Peach Bloom got tho best of tho start and opened up a gap of two lengths almost as soon as the barrier shot up. Shcalasted to the stretch head, where Arlena overhauled her and won going away. Lladon. favorite in the race, was off badly, bsgan rather slowly and finished Tom Haves showed another l-ycar-old of some ability In Dameron, who won tha fourth race. The gelding got oK In tho first -division, ran a nice sort of race and won rather handily from Paul Hcvere. Laurel L. got third money. Var!ctes, from tha Gardner stable, was a starter In this event and was running nlcelv when sho was knocked out of it by Joe Graham, who stopped suddenly and carried her back. Park yesterday, but close, to S.CC0 persons wero rewarded for their attendance by witnessing two of the prettiest races of tha season and tha ex tremely exceptional feature of a. dead heat between Nimble Nag- and Margie 6. In the second event. Twenty minutes alter tho tie the race was run off. and Moxgla 9. beat Nimble Nag by a short half length. The crowd In tho grand stand, on the plaza and stretched along the rail was in an uproar when the horses went under the wire. A presiding Judge Is averse to declaring a dead heat, but Judgn Brady said there was no alternative in the ractx yesterday. "I knew it would be powerfully close be tween, the horses." oald Judge Brady. "As they neared the wirs each Jump brought them closer together, and as they flashed across my line of vision between the poles I was Unable to distinguish the 'nod. and It was a dead heat." Dead heats are Infrequent. The last one was run at the Fair Grounds about tno yean ago between Ed X. and Icicle. The run-off between Nimble Nag and Marglo S. was Indeed a horso race. It was for a mile and three-sixteenths, and for tho entire routs tha horses ran like 'a team. They broks on even terms, s. Martin on Margie S. cleverly forced Calvlt on the Nar to set the pace, but rated his mount so well that he did not allow Margie to drop back farther than the Nag's flank. In roumllnr tha stretch lejartln forced Marglo up to even terms with Nlmbla Nag, and when thev came into tho stralirht Martin took Marglo Into the ran. squeezed through, and then it was tha survival of the fittest. Nimble Nag hung on gamely, but Marrle was a wee bit better, ami won. In tha orUlnal race. Nlmbla Nag was a heavily-played favorite at Ha to 1. while Margie S. was lightly played at from S to 1 to 15 to X In the run off Nlmbla Nag was held at 1 to 2 and Margie a. at C to S and 7 to E. Sentiment and handicapping sent many to tho books on Margie. It Is said, how ever, that the bookmakers quit about even on the race. ilorenda, ridden by Burton, very handily won the fourth, race. Jean Gravler waa tha only contender. From the fall of tha flag. Doctor Kam merer showed his heels to his field. In tha fifth he was closely followed by Doc tor Garrlck. At the stretch turn Oarrlck wnt to tne tront and won easily. ijoctur cpruui won me nrst race easi.y. San Frlmo was "tipped" and might have done better, but was cut oft at the head of the stretch. Eoland saw that there was no chance and rated his mount for second place. The winner of tha third race turned up in Marco Polo, pvrhapa the best of a very ordinary tleitl. Belle of the Ring looked the dinner UI1 within fifty yards of the ulre. While running on even terms Marco Polo seemed to stumble enough to throw him a bead In front without losing his Favorite In Jierr Rochelle HaBeUe neat Xnx Casta and Savable. New York, May 13.
