Five candidates for. the World's Fair Handicap are carded to face the barrier In the Club Members' Handicap at the Fair Grounds to-day. Bernays, now favor ite In future books for the bit; stake, be ing destined to occupy the post of first choice In the race. Five- other performers of stake caliber H alto entered and the class of the field 3s unquestionably the highest that ever started In this event. Promise Is for one of the greatest contests ever -witnessed on a St. Louis track. What makes the field of particular In terest apart fdr the presence of the horses as World's Fair Handicap con tenders. Is the fact that two of the field, qf whom much has been heard, are down for competition. One of these is Judge Himes, brought here by Charley Ellison, and the recipient of a special prep aration for the big race. The other Is Bondage from Jim Arthur's stable. Jockey Mclntyre will bestride the latter Jn the race t?-day, and. If the horse's performance meets expectations, he will be a. strong candidate for the stake event of next Saturday. Bernays will make his aecond appearance on the local tracks, and Estrada Palma will also appear once more, while Old Stone's true ability should be shown di'tjnrtlv tp-rtay. On the reports of what each candidate has done, on the strength of Bondage's Chicago record and the form he has shown there, It look? like a tight fit between the Arthur horse and Bernays for first position. Bernays carries two pounds more than Ills opponent, but this should change the result "but little. Judge Himes has been worked carefully In the SoutB and since his arrival here, and It seems as though NOTIQE. AVE GAVE TO OVER 30Q CLIENTS CL.OVERTQN IO-IWON TABY TOSA 6-5 WON SATURDAY. Jack Young's Inaugural record hardly comes up to that of the three candidates mentioned. It hardly looks as though he can be picked here In spite of the strong local tip which Is going tha rounds about him. Jordan and Sambo seem out of It and Neversuch looks to be In too fast company. Flying Torpedo ran rather disappoint ingly his last out. but It Is said that he did not like the track. He may be close up to-day, but can hardly be selected for a position on his local performances. If ms iorm at umcago last year, nis ocsi form, cobld be reproduced here, he would be the keenest kind of a contender. Old Stone ran such a good race Thurs day that it. is hard to tell lust haw irood the Mattlngly colt Is. The distance, one mile and a quarter, may be a trifle far for him as yet, "but he certainly has the ability to keep up with his field, at least. Estrada Palma seemed to be a trifle lame going to the post on his last out, and seems to be out of It here. Taking all together. It looks as though Bondage, Bernays and Judge Himes should be the contenders with the chances In favor of their finishing In the order named? A card of set en good races is presented, and little Broomhandle seems to have the third race won already. Pretension looks best In the second and Dave Samers, who was left at the post on his last out. but who ran a good race in spite of It, seems best In the first. Just So may be able to put It over Fore hand and Harmakls to-day. as the track will hardly favor Harmakls unless It Is somewhat soft- FnotUehts' Ftvorite ought to make herself felt by setting the pace. Radium, with lfght weight, may be able to win the sixth from Bllssfu1 and Suave, while Elle looks best in the last. The light weight on Easter Walters and his strong finish the last out. should make him a contender with Bessie McCarthy for place money. ' " AT TOIOX TRACK. The Union Jockey Club Handicap will be the feature' at Union Park to-day. It will be a mile and a sixteenth event, with eleven starters, and gives promise of be ing he, most int.erest.Ing race so far run at the new track. Granting that the track Is fast, the popular event should be won by Kenova, who Is Just now In the pink of form and at the weight Is unquestionably the class of the field. The Messenger is entered In this race, but has an impost of 123 pounds. Several weeks ago he could have given thirty three pounds to Kenova and beaten her, but he cannot do it now. for the mare has greatly Improved. So have the other horses In the field. The Messenger hard ly figures to be In the money thus weighted. Sailor's Delight has an excellent chance of being second. If she gets a good ride, and Animosity should be third. The 'lat ter ran a much Improved race the other day and seems to be good. TV. B. Gates is in the race with 107 pounds. Despite the fact' that he won last Saturday's feature at the same distance, there Is nothing t,o base an opinion that he will even be In the money. Ora McKInney, with only eighty-three pounds up, has an outside chance of win ning, or, at least, breaking Into the money. She will likely be ridden 1. Fisher, who has piloted her to victory twice and seems to know how to handle her to the best' advantage. Labor' has not been out tor several weeks, but does not figure strongly in the race. Bar le Due cannot be entirely overlooked, but unless'the track Is? heavy appears to hav! but a remote chance. VIRGIE D'QR'S CHANCE. The drat race to-day looks like a gift to Vlrgie d'Or. Chicago Girl appears to be the only contender. The latter has not won a race at the Union track, and seems, always Incumbered with bad luck. Socapa should be third. Considering the weights, Ella 'Waggoner ICoks the wlnnerbf the second, the a-year-old event. She ran a fair race the other day, and will likely run an improved one to-day. The Houstabout should be second and Bearhunter third. Chicarra has the outside chance. Much depends upon the distribution ot Jockeys In this 'race. 'The third event will be an Interesting one, es many of the fastest sprinters' at the track meet at five and one-half fur longs. Boomerack has the top weight, 115 pounds, but now that he is good should carry'lt to victory. He will likely be rid den by Willie Waldo, who is riding In fine form. Cappamofe shpuld be secqnd and Gus Lanka third. Attila, moderately weighted, should win the fourth race, with 11$ pounds up At tila gave Ora McKlhney twenty-three Jiounds and ran her to a short half a ength Thursday. Springbrook Is the natural selection Jp Place, and Moderator to show. Gold Ribbon looks a splendid bet to win the fifth race. Cay should be second and Jean Gravter third. The latter la lucky if ha -runs third, taking his stupid race yes terdajrlnto consideration. ' The first steeplechase will be run over the now course In the lnflekl. It will doubtless prove-, a feature, but there 18 little to base a selection upon. Walter appears to have the best chance, with Harrow second and Wachusetts third. AN QLR APAQB SAYS--. TEMPESTUOUS DAY AT FAIR GROUNDS .Jockej-s and Horse Owners Have Stormy Time, Favorites Fare Badly and Long Shots Have an Inning. Hard luck for jockeys and horse owners prevailed at the Fair Grounds jesterday and the afternoon closed on a day marked by the victory of one 60-to-l shot of nu merous long shots and by a most tem pestuous time In sellins-race circles, -with several owners taking; a hand. To a foul on Jockey Bailey's part, com mitted In the last 100 yards of the fifth race, does the Itespass stable owe about as striking; a visitation of hard luck as has descended upon any horseman this season. Not only did they lose their winner. Gal lasher, through the claiming route, but they also lost the money they had wa gered upon the animal and the first money In the purse, although Gallagher won the event after getting off badly and going around his field. As a result of a sudden swerve on Gal lagher's part when he was running handi ly and clearly the winner. Conundrum was knocked completely off his stride ahd al most thrown. Gallagher then went on and won easily. The rules of racing left Judga llaginn no. alternative but to dis- QUallfv-the victor, nnd this rilsnunlifinatirm L placed Gallagher last In the race. .u,iauwiwy ue uvuiuie suujei:k iu tiuiui for the amount for whlcli he was entered 3700, plus" the COO first money of the purse. Dan Honier claimed him for the JL0OO. Had the race been allowed to stand, the own ers could liavo protected the horse through the V'oiling route, if any person claimed him. The disqualification also lost them some neat wagers made on the hprse and the first money in the purse. So the TlctOfX was about as costly a performance as could be devised. Another hard-luck story could be told of ithe Bennett stable In the sixth, race. Falkland was probably best here- He yrent around his field, seemed to have a chance to get up and was then pinched off near the roll. Three claims at 11.000 each were Instantly filed by TV. J. Houclc, John 11c Clemand arid J. C. Cabn. They drew tots for the colt and Houck got him. Mickey Shannon was unable to protect the colt, as he could have done had he Tyon. Then came Colonel Baker's streak of ill fortune. Gasllghter won the last event on the card. Houck ran the winner Up COS. Colonel Baker protected him by bidding an extra 25. Not only was he thus de orlved of the purse, but it cost him Ji to Win the event, JOCKBYS AHE FINED. Finally the jockeys caughf It hot, and heavily in the shape, of fines and suspen sions. It was surely a troublesome day for the. knights of the saddle. Each race saw One or more fined or'suspehded, and the list of penalties was lengthy at the n the first race TV. Davis and Schickel received fines of 225 each -at the post and Phillips caught a like amount a moment later. Hodgeson ivas fined -JS for disobe dience In the second race. Clayton became obstreperous at the post in the third and got ten days dn the ground. In the fourth race J. Booker provoked the usually passive Mr. Dade until that worthy descended from his gtand and came near taking matters Into his own hands. Booker received a fine of S10Q and ten days suspension. In the fifth race Crawford was fined ?M and In the sixth Wolff received attention to the tune ot XS. Inasmuch as It was a day ot upsets in the racing. It Is certain that many a hard luck tale was recounted by the bettors last evening. Monogram galloped home in the first at 15 tol: Wolfram at SO to I won the second; Dishabille, second choice, won the third; Foxy Kane, at long Odds, Won the fifth: Gallagher's disqualification gave the race t? Mr. Daly's Pipe won the feature, tiin fourth race, at six furlongs. J. Bidner Walker, the odds-on favorite, was a dis appointment, as he ran a miserable race, after getting off In a good position. An zeiger looked the winner until twenty yards from the wire, when Waldo urged Pipe to victory. Moderator was off badly and gradually closed ground, but had no chance of -winning. Cay and Caddie Mae were equal favor ites in the first race at S to 2. The former won handily from large field. Calvlt got Cay away we.l In motion and persistently hustled him along. Fisher put up .i splendid ride on Zama. who was quoted In the bcoks at 20 to 1, and finished sec ond. Our Cora at 20 to 1 was third. Trespasser, a 30-to-l shot, won the sec ond race. Jean Gravler was a pronounced favorite in this race, made up of a field of fourteen, but Jean "dogged" it. and. turning into the stretch In a second po sition. Cursus ran a splendid, race and wen the third event with ease. Leech was made the medium of a heavy play, but ran a dull race. Neko, upder a superior ride by Lowe, easily won the fifth race.' The horse was heavily played. GVnflo went to the front before the first turn was reached and held the position to the three-quarters, when he commenced to bleed and had to be pulled up, Glenflo appears to be over worked.
