AT THE. V,UK .GROUNDS. Two-year-olds will hold the center of the card at the Fair Grounds to-day, the first and third races having a Rood array of youngsters entered. In the third event, prospects are for rather a good content. Colonel White and Limerick Girl, from the jChlnn, and Hayes stables, respectively, reem about the bsst In the race and are FCheduled to pock the top welghtr. Al though they are to oppose some pood per formers Ja the Jevenile division, it appears as though they might be given precedence In the order named. ColonVl While Is to park three pounds more than Limerick Girl, but It seems i though he could do It. Sylvan Belle. Loyal Street and The Doctress have all 1-cen winners, but it appears as though thci" rmit cede place here. Joe Keller, from the Baker stable, seems to have the' preference for fhow money. Willowdene, Pillar -and Lone Wolf seem to.have lhings their own way In the open ing race. Pillar ran a good race his lat out but so did Lone Wolf and on the last meeting of this, pair. Lone Wolf fin ished to the fore. Weights considered. Lone Wolf should do it again. But it seems as though Willowdene may do the best work here. Follea. Bergerea seems to have the edge In the fifth race. She Is In with a bunch' of 3-year-old fillies of whom the best ap pears to be Mafalda. Athena, formerly a member of the Hsvps stable, will onrjose her former stable mate here, and looks to be a strong candidate for show money. Love's Labor was a good horse lat season is said to have been worked back Into trim and may win the last race from Misanthrope. At that, it seems a though the Bennett entry here was probably as strong a card to tie to as Love's Labor. In the second race. KIngstelle mar win from Mildred L. And lli'lbrook. Mildred Ll will start at a slightlv longer route than on her last appearance, but seems perfectly capable of covering tffe ground. OLD STONE FIRST AT FAIR GROUNDS. Hattingley Colt Easily Won Fea ture .Race, Defeating Two Can didates for World's Fair Stake. ' Judge Hlmes-wanot favored by the go ir.ir and heVas not expected to do much more than he showed yesterday? NHfh'e'f l was Flying Torpedo aided going, which made! running a thing to be avoided. But this much. can be aid of Torpedo that he can do'l much better than he did yesterday. . The Lazarus horse received an extremely easy ride and finished well back In his field. So far as his chances In Saturday's stake are concerned his race of yesterday can je thrown out altogether. Qld Stone's early speed proved his sal vation here. Off nicely, he went to the front tit the start, led nil the way, stood off a challenge at the head of the stretch, and must be considered a factor In the bis event of Saturday, even admitting that he will not be cne of the first betting choices. HU speed should enable him to Srove a disturbing element out In front, owever. Pretension, front the Clvlll stable, won an easy race In the third, and Feronia, held at odds of 40 to 1 in the betting, came home ahead ,ot Sting and Suave In the third race. Lady Contrary showed a meteoric burst of speed in this race, but failed to hold It. Woodlands, frcm the Scbrelber barn, showed himself a colt pf some ability by standing off Hilton Young in the fifth race. The latter youngster, from the (Thlnn string, commenced a trifle slowly, but finished strongly at the end. Wood Minds hung on well, however, and got first money rather neatly. Frank Collins was favored by the track and had things easily his own way In the last event. He indulged Our LilUe with the lead for part of the journey, after setting the pace himself for the first furlong, then drew away from the Hermence filly In the stretch and won rather nicely. t Wakeful bids fair to equal Passive's record for chronic running in the money. The third race at a mile and seventy yard will be the feature of the card. It Is well filled and should prove a very interesting eyent and a good one from a speculator's point of view. With good luck and a good ride Bar le Due shouki win. His last out was not brilliant, but he figures to do better, as he has some weight off and the distance Is very suitable. With Somenoi and Duellt coupled. It. It. Itlee should get second money. With nuiety-two pounds up Dodle S. looks very attractive to run third. Animosity may be the outsider- Bad Frnny will carry too weight. 115 pound". and good a he Is he can scarce give weigni to more than one or two in this company. Labor Is In with 103 pounds, but he has not run even a creditable race since the Inaugural Handicap. There Is some class here and there In the fourth race. Big Injun really figures the best, but It Is a pretty open sort of a proposition, in which several have a sma'M chance of winning. Bart Howe should be as good as second and Prince of Endurance third. Hemlock, whllp win ning her last out. hard.y figures in this company. Marco Polo may wake up here and will be worth while watching when the book Is made up. The first race Is made up of a very ordinary lot of selling platers. Belle of the Ring should win it, with Leila Barr second and Review third. The second race looks to be between Fondness and St. Resolute. With a good ride. Fondness should win. San Frlmo looks an attractive bet to show. With only 109 pounds and considering the distance, a mile and a sixteenth, Lampa dione looks very attractive In the fifth race. Cheny looks to be the contender, but In the event of a wet track Little Pirate may be the surprise. In any event Little Pirate should be in the money. Pirate Is a natural selection In the sixth race and shpulrt win. Plantagenet ap pears to, be rounding to form and should run second In this race. Chicago Girl should be third. THE FIDDLER WINS FEATURE AT UNION Horse oil Which "Killing"' Was Made in the East Last Sea son, Romps Home at 15 to 1. Orn McKlnnev was the favorite, at 8 to 5, but with 107 pounds up. ran a poor race. Setauket, with 131 pounds, had ro chance. Dark" Planet waa supposed to be the "good thing" and received a heavy play at 3 to 1 ond better. ThA winner nf the first race turned up in Seaforth. Equity was second and Mol ly TenbrooK third, -mere was noiuuis about the race to enthuse. Springbrook very handily- won the sec ond event. Her price was as good as 3 to 1. A Convict was a false favorite at even "countess Clara, off well, had no trouble In capturing the third race. Belle of the Ring showed speed, but was oft at a dis advantage and was pocketed In the home st retell J. Sidney Walker got oft with a running start in the flve-and-one-half-furlong race and won all the way. Waiter was clearly best of the others and closed with a rush. The last race on the card was a canter for Scorpolette. Reducer, the odds-on favorite, hung on to the head of the stretch end then surrendered. Thf Hearst forces captured the temporary organiza tion of the State Democratic Convention to-day by a vote of 157 to 401, and It was expected that they would be strong enough to Instruct the delegation for their candidate. But at 11 o'clock to-night the anti-Hearst forces, are putting up a very vigorous fight, and the chances appear to be about even. The- antt-Hearst element axe. believed o be. la favor of the candidacy of Judge Parker of New York, but have maintained that all they seek is tu send an unin structed delegation to the National Convention. Beriiay.3 Outworked by Stable Two Horses Colonial Girl and Gold Heels Covers the Six Shooter and Bernays will be the Joint dependence of the Respcss stable In the World's Fair Handicap Saturday. Mc Chcsney and Wltful will both start and Gold 'Heels, although pulling up slightly lame yesterday, will almost certainly bs sent to the post. Final announcement to this effect wes made yesterday. After Six Shooter and Bernays had made one of the best workouts yet shown for the big stake, considering the state of the track. It was decided to work them both. They were sent one mile and one-eighth In 1:59',J. Six Shooter beating out Bernays b two and one-half lengths in the racing clip at which they were sent for the last four furlongs. Gold Heelo went a mile In 1:49. The hqrse pulled up. as usual, distinctly fa voring cne forleg, but Tom Hayes, his owner, announced that he was not disap pointed with the performance. The horse cooled out In reasonably fair shape, but seemed somewhat tired at the end. Roger Hayep, however, stated that he had plen ty In reserve. "He waa fighting for his head the last three-slxteenth3." he said, "?nd I think the race will be run Gold Hcefe, Hermls and MeChesney. We are satisfied with the condition shown by Gold Heele." "Tom Hayes stated that If the horse stood up throughout the race he asked no odds from any other candidate, and added that his norkdut was all that could be expected or him. Intense interest was manifested In the trial of Bernays and Six Shooter, and a dozen watches held by horsemen in the various groups around the course were snapped on the pair. .Every move of the thoroughbreds was watched as they nwept around the track, and the time caught by all watches did not vary the nfth part of a second. Secretary Hachmelster, whose watch splits on the fifth seconds Instead of the quarters, caught tho time in 1:591-5. tak ing It from the judge,V stand while the ...... viu. jliib vvorKoui was regarueu as most promising. HERJIIS HAS WORKOUT. Immediately after the fourth race, Her mls was worked out at an easy clip. The trial of the great horse waa also watched with the greatest interest, and the easy fashion in, which he cantered around the track showed that he has stood his Jour ney to the West In great style. No attempt was made to speed him. but he pulled up fighting for his head. Trainer Shields merely smiles sardonically when asked concerning the chances of other candidates In the race. and. states that Hral3.tlckets nr& cashed Just now. That Wltful and MeChesney arc to start was made positive by messages received from Sam Hildretli yesterday, who wired becretary Hachmelster that both would be here this morning and that both would start. Hlidreth brings twenty hor-ijs of his own string with him. Dispatches that McChesnnv wn- not tu start were thus shown tp, be groundless. , Tciii 31U113 nave oeen rcscrveu for -all the entries In the big ra.ee.. Schorr also asked for .stable room for twenty horses and Iwlll bring his entire string here. Follojvlng the close of Washington Pork, telegrams came thick and fast to the lo cal track, asking for stalls here': John Rodcgap wired for seventeen stalls, L. B. Bellew wants room forflfteen. As fast as room can be prepared for these stables, stalls are being allotted, and chances are for the best lot of thorough breds ever assembled here belne nn the grounds in time to be entered in the races of Saturday. Many of the leading Chicago Handicap performers will be in the feature events from now on. COLONIAL GIRL'S CHANCES. Colonial Girl's workout yesterday was the subject pf more than usual interest. Not only is her chance, in the big stake bright enough to make her performance of Interest, but .the local sentiment at taching to, the mare has caused general interest to be taken In her performance. Otto Stifel, the local brewer. Is chiefly Interested In tha mare and Is one of her principal owners. Charley Rowe has been training her and seems to have tbe mare In grand shape. What lends added Inter est to her appearance Is the fact that it waa on the Fair Grounds course she first made a good record as a 2 and 3 year old, then running In the colors of the Rogers stable. Mr. Stifel and Rowe ha,ve strong hopes of winning the big event, and when she was worked out one mile, and an eighth yesterday, covering the distance In 1:59 with a boy weighing 121 pounds In thy saddle. It was conceded that she must bo considered a factor In the big event. If Colonial Girl can live up tx her work outn and appearance, she must be con ceded a strong chance. Charlev Rowe seems to have worked her Into the best fiosslble shape, and she Is one of the most mpresslve-looklng entries In the big race. BETTING ON HANDICAP. Shelby Oliver and J. B. Respass took two bets yesterday that show which way local sporting Interest trends In the handi cap. Oliver laid odds of 3 to 1 against Hermls when the arrival ot the horse was definitely known, and Fred Pecb, the bookmaker, yesterday bet htm 1200 at this price. The book laid SSOO to J230. Another bet was 00 to J10O against Co lonial Girl, a local bookmaker taking a Chance on the Stifel mare. Since McChes ney's arrival hag become assured, Oliver reports quite a number of small bets on the big horse; After makinc the first bet un nerraus. i-escn onerea to Det j. is.
