The big handicaps in several of the
events rendered it impossible for some of
the scratch men to viln. espciall- in the
high Jump and shot-put.
Charles J. p. J,ucas. who holds several
record" In potato racing, lowered the
world's record. Ten potatoes were placed
on the track, dve fe-t apart. I.ucas gath
ered them In it seconds Rat. The old
record, which has stood for about ten
years, was 4S2-3 seconds. The distance
covered in this event Is something like 1S3
yards.
The 120-yard hurdle event was the mo?t
exciting event of the programme. Seth
Smith. Dan Dillon and St. Clair Shaw
were, the only starters. Getting off about
e-en. Smith seemed to Ioe at the second
stick, but regained hl-i stride and won the
event, with shaw second and Dillon third.
Little space was taken tip by the tha-e
men at the finish. The time was IT sec

Doctor W. J. Hennessey, with a handi
cap of twelve inches, won the high Jump,
hi actual jump being Z feet : inches,
while Emil Frevmark of the Mlw-nnri
Athletic Club jumped 5 feet S and only re

same club, with four inches handicap, won
second place with a Jump of 3 feet 7

This handicap was too much for Frcy

Hennessey was fortunate in the shot-put,

The quarter-mile run was won by Mur

According to the .irtlclrs. the hoys are

As a preliminary to the main event.
Julius Klein rnd Charley Cornwall will

local boys, and eteli has appeared several

To the winner of to-nicht's fight, hon

will undoubtedly be accorded Attell Is
recognized as the feather-weight cham
pion, and won this title beyond dispute
by defeating Harry Forbes in their bout
at the ctu.
One singular fact may be mentioned in
connection with this affair, to-wit: that
both boys have fought their chief battle"
in this city, and have made their reputa
tion in local bouts.
WON HONORS HERE.
Abe won his first claim to distinction in
the local ring. He made hi-. flrt appear
ance here a an opponent for Oeorge
Dixon, who was then righting good bat
tle, and who hart but recently been de
feated by Terrv- MeGovcrn. He'wpn from
Dixon. George S'ller'refefcelng the bout
and deciding that Abe should receive the
verdict.
His next fight wa with Harry Forbes,
to whem he Ion a verdict with Slier
refereeing. This fight always exrited
considerable comment, n Abe claimed
lecided that five more rounds should bi
fought, tbl" condition having been .'
t.iched to the articles in cav the referee
was unable to serurate the men at th
end of the fifteenth round
The ring was heavily piddeil on thh- m
casion. and Abe ha always .liimed iu.
he wore himself down by sprinting around
the yielding surface of the squared cir
cle. He finally b-cam utterly exhausted
in the eighteenth round, and then an 1
not until then Yanger commenced to
reach him.
Y.incer sent him down for the count
four times in the ninteenth round Then
seeing that the uolice was about to ui'er j
fere. Abe derided to get up and mix I
things with his bulkier opponent Ju-
as the police broke through the ropes AIip I
was swapping punches ith Yanger and '
it seemed a toss up as to whb h man was
entitled to the verdict. j
Siier awarded the deHion to Yange- I
but it was the last fight he ever refereed
at the West End Club. Charley Haugnton

he was succeeded bv Drve Nelson who

here were his coes with Clirenee Forbes
and with ALt-i He punched Kid Ab-l

then was caught In- a blow which the

Padden. 3HARPE TO REFEP.EE
The main event to-night will likely go
on about St.".. with Harry Sharpe as ref
eree. He will preside n loth events of
the evenin-. and a curtain-ra'ser will alo
bo put on to entertain the crowd. Promise
is for the greatest Lattle ever witnessed
at the institution.
Attell said last nlcht that the fignt
would have to end within ten rounds.
"I'll either co r.ut In ten rounds mvself
or I'll put Tommy away in the same
time." said Abe. "and I think it'll be
Tommy that will co out. I m pr-ttv-sure.
that I'll win from Tommy on a knockout."
Carl "Cork, who Js serving as manager
for Attell when l&r Bloom is not on hand,
stated that the Chicago contlnaent was:
ready to bet on Abe In to-night's flght.
The battle Is of great promise through
