DAY'S AGGREGATE SALES LOWEST SINCE OCTOBER. Strength of Day's Operations Is Confined to Iron and Steel In dustrials, Trade's Advices Affecting Prices. New York. Nov. 3. There was a notable subsidence of speculative interest In the stock market to-day. There was evidence in the large operations of a few Arms, which are credited with doing tho business for some powerful interests, that those in terests were still taking a speculative part in the transactions. But their operations were confined to fewer stocks and were on a smaller scale than for some time. Part of hem were large buying orders in tho metal stocks, and it was current belief that large selling orders for purposes of realizing came from the same sources. Even with the activity or a few special stocks on dealings of this character tho day's aggregate sales fell to the lowest figure of any day since before tho middle of October, and If the general market alone Is considered the trading was actually dull, and the drift of prices very sluggish d indifferent. The halt in the activity of the market generally attributed to a numose to await the passing of the election, owing to the nroverblal dread of speculators of the unsettling effect of that contest, and their inability to estimate what will be Its ef fects on business and industry. IRON AND "STEEL TRADING. Such strength as there was in to-day's market was largely confined to the iron and steel industrials and bore a close re lation to tile advices from that trade. In formal Intimations were in circulation that tho orders Tccelved by tho United States Steel Corporation were in an Increasing rate and approaching the limits of pro ductive capacity. It was pointed out also that the active demand for pig iron was beginning to spread to some lines of lln Ished products an extension which has not been conspicuous up to this time. Tho United slates Stee. stocks were the most active of the group, but soma of the partly dormant stocks made much better gains. Tennessee Coal rising more than 3. and Bloss-Sheffleld Steel 5 points. The Pennsylvania group of railroad stocks showed sympathy with this strength, as is usually the case, owing to the largo proportion of their traffic, which is mado up of iron and steel products. BROOKLYN TRANSIT HELPED. The running of the first cars over the new Eiist River bridge gave a Hit to Brooklyn Transit. Sugar had the advant age of a further advance In the price of refined sugar. Another rise In copper did not avail to hold Amalgamated Copper, which reacted on profit taking, and on de nials of the alleged control ot the Helnzo properties In its interest. The failure of confirmation of deal stories and tho positive denials of them hi some cases were influences at other points in the market. Aside from the strong points mentioned the market was reactionary, but the decline was not ex treme and ran to a point In only a hand ful of leading stocks. These decl'ncs were largely made up and converted Into gain for n few in the late dealings. The Grangers rallied well from their early de pression on account of some expert esti mates of a heavy corn crop. The recov ery In St. Paul was helped by the In crease in both gross and net earnings for September. MONET MARKET. The money market was undisturbed, al though sterling exchange rallied from its early weakness here and ran off In Tar's Rnd Berlin, thus narrowing the margin for a resumption of gold exports. The returns of both the Bank of England, the Bank of France were-weak, but tho fact that the Bank of England', discount rate was nbt raised was regarded as nn Indi cation of confidence in a relaxation of the pressure upon London for gold. Drive in Corn Carries the Decem ber Price Oft l-2c, In fluencing May. REPUBLIC SPECIAL. Chicago, Nov. 3. Wheat had a few mo ments of decided weakness on the publica tion of some reassuring comments by Snow on tho v, inter wheat condition, predictins a heavy increase in acreage, and belittling the damage by drought and Hessian fly. There was enough selling on the' btrength of this announcement to cost the price -Jic But sentiment was Influenced more posi tively by reports tvhlch kept coming in from the Southwest of damage to wheat by bath -fly and drought, by the prospects of continued dry weather and by the re placing of long wheat by the St. Louis bull crowd. Spencer's houso was a large buyer on the break In May to LllU. and with local bull effort brought about a quick recovery to $1.12. This figure proved top for all the early buyers, local realizing eauMns little setbacks. Late buying of about 500. 000 bu. by a Cudahy houso forced a more pronounced advance and Spencer's bought heally again over $1.12. this market clos ing at $1.12--i, a loss of i from top, but a gain for the day of Uc; other futures up about as much. ST. LOUIS SALES. Tho report of sales of 150,000 bu. cash wheat from St, Louis, part to go to Toledo, was a factor in the late strength of the market. Elsewhere cash markets did not show so much strength, Kansiis City steady to a cent lower, and milling de mand quiet Some local houses reported Improvement In the milling Inquiry, but It w-as only an inquiry, bales limited to about 20.000 bu. Millers called tho flour demand tame. Tho falling off In primary receipts and cable reports of wet weather in Argentina were other market Influences. DRIVE IN CORN. Wall street Interests, with advance news of Snow's estimate of a corn crop of 2. &00,000,OW made a drive at the -market's early hour, which carried the Dec. price off He. and this letting down of the Dec premium influenced considerable felling of May. "Hospitals as Educators." Trading in Oats Is Extremely Quiet, and Provisions Are Firm on Packers' Buying. BY ASSOCIATED PRESS. Chicago, Now 3. Excessive rains in Ar gentina and lack of moisture in the United States were main factors in a firm wheat market hero to-day. Both Dec. and May wheat closed with a gain of Uc Corn is oft 'iS'.ic. Oats are unchanged and pro visions are 2!c to "Uc higher. Reports of protracted wet weather In Ar gentina brought out a good demand for wheat when trading began. As a result, a firm undertone prevailed, initial quotations on Dec being unchanged to He higher at $1.12's to $1.12',i; May was a shade lower to H6-!ic higher at $1.11;, to $1.12",- For u. time the buying was of a. lovely character, shorts being quite activo on that1 side of the market. Slight advances were made In tile price ot all deliveries, both Dec and May selling up to fl.liti HESSIAN FLY DAJLVGE. At this point the market was i-ubjected to heavy Felling pressure. The reason mainly given for the selling ma the fact that rcjiorts of Hes&lan fly damage in winter wheat had been allayed to a con siderable extent by reports to a Cincinnati crop journal. According to this authority, damage to tho growing crop thus far bas been comparativelv Insignificant. The market was unable to withstand tho weight of offerings and In consequence Dec. sold down to $1.11H; May declined to $1.11U. Primary receipts were again of smaller volume than last year's and an active dis tribution of wheat was seemingly in progress from Western market centers to parts of the country where there 13 a scarcity. The falling oft in receipts had its ef fect, and on this decline there was enough wheat wanted to re-establish the feeling of firmness with which business com menced. Drought damage reports contin ued to come In. tho effect ot which was to stimulate a better, demand. A firm tone prevailed at the close. Final quotations on Dec were at Jl.lH and on May at 31.13U- Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 4S.E0O bu. Primary iccelpts were 1.023,000 bu., i-om-pared with 1.-24,000 bu. a year ago. Min neapolis. Duluth and Chicago reported ic celpts of SS2 cars, against 576 cars last week, and 1.17S cars a year ago. CORN. Bearish reports of crop exports and con tinued excellent weather conditions were features that caused an easier undertone In the corn market. According to a local crop statistician, husking returns to date Indicato a total crop of 2.509,000,000 bu. Reports of cash sales at 7c above the price of May proved of some assistance in checking the design. Dec. opened a shade to He higher, at 4S4c to 4S" 4S5JC. sold off to 47;ic. and closed at 4SHc. While the volume of trading was not extremely large, there was a good buying interest and closing prices were well above those of the previous day. The situation abroad had about lost its potency as a market facto-, but there were bullish domestic conditions which more than made up for the lack of a war scare. There wa3 not so much.tclk of drought in the winter belt, but receipts were light and country holders showed little inclination to let go their wheat. Nebraska bent in its quota of Hessian-fly damage rcport3, and as rain had fallen only In portions or the Southwest, there was little to encourage selling. Slow movement of spring wheat to the Northwest caused a good deal of strength in Minneapolis and Chicago. Tho advances In some markets wero reflected here. Early closing cables caused a slight recession around noon, but later the market had fairly good support. Trading was mainly scalpers and small operators. Corn derived a good deal of strength from the weather news. There were pro-t-pcct3 of rain, which would interfere with the movement to market. Light local and primary receipts also liad a bullish effect. Dec. w heat opened Hi.!c up and closed H'fi'Hc up. Dec. corn opened U-Sc up and closed US He up. Dec. oats closed unchanged. Receipts'of produce were moderate and prices ot fruits and vegetables w ere steady to higher. Local securities were fairly active. Tractions had some support on the downturn. Yesterday's bank clearings were $10,266,051; balances $520,614. Discount rates wero steady between 414 and 6 per cent. Spot cotton wa3 l-16c higher In the local market. GRAIN VALUES ADVANCE ON WEATHER OUTLOOK. NEBRASKA REPORTS HESSIAN FLY. THE Receipts Are Large and Ruin Threatens to Check the Move ment to Market. Bullish domestic conditions supplanted tho war scare In jesterday's local mar ket. While there was no great bulge, tho ruling options plainly showed tho effect of buying interest. Though rain had fall en in the Southwest, the drought situa tion was not entirely relieved and tho movement to Liarket was slow. Reports of damage by th 5 Hessian fly In Nebraska and strength in other markets, kept val ues on the upturn until the close. Dec. wheat opened HS?sc up, ranged from J1.13JI to $U3 and closed at $1.13U bid. Corn showed considerable early strength, but the speculative interest was so small that only a slight net advance was scored. Moderate receipts and predictions of rain were the bullish factors.
