'ABRIOLA & S LIMOUSINE E SEDANS l" AUBURN SAUES OF BRIDGEPORT 2291 Fairfield Avenue - Phone Barnum 4655 Bridgeport, Connecticut ENGLISH SECTION ByAREL STREET PAJAMAS "Oh, wise and upright judge!" In a North Caroline city recently a courageous man went forth in the public eye clad only in light blue rayon pajamas. The first time he was unmolested. People may have thought him a bit eccentric, but they did not try to coerce "him into conformity with their idea of what the properly dressed person should wear. The second time he went out in this costume he passed the chief of police who promptly arrested him and took him before the mayor's court. The mayor-judge heard the complaint, studied the costume and then dismissed the man, saying he only wished he had nerve enough to adopt such a costume himself. The mayor went further. He looked up the law and Constit ution and proceeded to issue a solenmn proclamation stating "the inherent right of every citizen or inhabitant of the city, or every .visitor, to dress as he pleases, and go and come as he pleases, as long as "there is no indecent exposure of his person." So now we may have other heroic men following this example and going forth clad in pajamas of linen or silk or palm beach cloth. A very slight variation of cut and trimming would remove such' costumes from the pajamas class and make them merely summer suits without all of the foolish frills of collar, tie, belt, shirt and so on. Dress reform for men must come. Perhaps this js the start. We hope so. COpT OP G0VERNMEIT IS BURDEN ON FARMERS According to Governor Cooper, of Ohio, the high cost of government ia the biggest single burden on the farmer just now. The farmer's tax is very heavy one, because his property is $11 in sight and cannot be concealed, and the tax assessor gets it all down on his books. But his direct tax is only a part of what he pays. The prices of many articles and services are increased by federal or state taxation, so that he pays indirectly to the government when he buys this merchandise. Before .piling new burdens on the taxpayers, we nlust ask whether the farmers, who take such a large share of them, can stand the added load. NOW WE CAN ALL GO The automobile has made it possible for the low as well as the high to take their vacation. A second-hand jitney worth only $25 will carry the entire family and their housing equipment as far as they want to go. They can live on as much or as little as they have to take with them. Many vacationists save money when they are away from home because household expenses are also given a rest while they are gone. Youngsters will probably pass along the news that a New York father dropped dead while spanking his son. In Chicago a 39-y ear-old-man struck his 65-years-old-mother in the face and got 112 days. The mother, as mother will, begged the judge to let him off. He should have gotten 112 months, for such a man is not fit to walk the streets among decent people. We have learned that the reason why women are not wear ing stockings now is because it is easier to wash a pair of legs than it is to wash a pair of stockings. New York, suffering from traffic congestion, is going to relieve it by adding a few thousand more taxicabs. Chicago's police commissioner has requested members of the force to eat more spinach. .Maybe he thinks they need more iron in their systems.
