Katered at the Elko postoffle for transmission through the mails as'^seeond-class matter BETTER DAY IS COMING There is practical unanimity on the part of the press of Nevada in regard to the movement started for the advancement of the state through the election of real and reliable residents of this common wealth as members of the next legislature. It has been . snown that fourteen members of one Ne vada legislature and eleven mem bers of another never returned to the counties that had honored them by election. This was the result of placing confidence in carpet-bag gers and men whose sole object in life is to secure an office. It is because of the general indications that such men will not again be elected to the legislature io this state that the people are to be con gratulated. It is already apparent that there is to be a new deal. It is the rule with the chronic office-seeker that after he had been elected to office he becomes arrogant and begins to feel that he is the master and not the servant. "The public be damned" is too often his motto. To a certain extent this is true of the conditions now pre vailing at Carson, and that is the reason the people of the state are clamoring for a house-cleaning in 1he capitol building. It seems to be the custom of the state officials to place their wives, sons, daugh ters, and even nephews on the pay roll without delay and a general spirit of arroganco dominates their attitude toward th? public. There fore the people are demanding a change. Already men in whom the people at large have confidence have an nounced themselves as candidates for the legislature and others will file between now and the first of August. With these men the beat interests ot the stateare uppermost and the coming serenade is to be the swan-song of the carpet-bagger in Nevada. The outlook for this state is brighter than usual in a campaign year.? Goldfield Tribune. CREDIT FOR THE POPULIST In these days when the politician of various taiths are tramping and motociug up and down the country making claims as to the achieve ments of their partiea, it is well t( call attention to some of the eventc of history. Back in July, 1892, the Populist ?who was called all manner of names to indicate that he was a crank of high degree, and a hope less cross between an anarchist and socialist? held a national convention and adopted a platform which de clared for a postal savings bank, government ownership of telegraph, telephone and railroads. The plat form also demanded the establish ment of the initiative, referendum, the direct election of senators and some federal judges, the direct primary, the free roinnge of silver, the creation of "scientific money" by the government, and the incom< tax. The postal bank income tax and direct election of seiiafrs have be come tacts of our national govern ment, The m^v m?ntf-?r the- na tionalizatio i of the telegraph ni d telephone la on th? way and <f;n hardly ba delayed many yrari. Already many states* including Culifornia^have adopted the initia tive. referendum end recall. TN eleetion of federal judges has not gained much headway, but ~Rou#e velt haa declared foi* the rfecsll ; of judicial decisions. The direct primary is an accom plished fart in most of the states, and. in some form it seems likely to come into universal use. In fact, with the sole exception of the money planks, the platform of the Populist has been woiked out in the laws of the land. ? Sac reuaento Union. . Jumping the Traces. The label "railroad orosslng" Is put there so people won't think It Is a billiard table or a confectionery chop or a swimming pool.
