Notify Mr. Pnaderf ord. -
General satisfaction was expressed
about town yesterday owing to the ac
ceptance of the terms offered by the
officials of the railroad company by the
Trolleymen's union, and over the fact
that during the heated term New Ha
ven is not to be burdened by a trolley
strike. The company is to be congratu
lated on the successful management of
the case and its happy outcome,.... The
trolleymen voted with enthusiasm to
accept the terms offered by the com
pany. and the public can continue their
pleasure rides on the trolley lines as
usual without Interruption. General
Manager Funderford comes in for a
good deal of praise for his diplomacy In
the matter and his courteous handling.
of the case.
After a prolonged meeting which be
gan at 2 o'clock yesterday morning and
which lasted until the hour of adjourn
ment, 4:20 o'clock, the men voted to ac
cept everything that the company had
offered them with three -cheers and a
hurrah, and all visions of future trouble
vanished into thin air.
The meeting was called to order by
President James W. Burke, who read
the answer of the company to the re
quest of the men.
The main points of the company's
answer were these: j , :
Extra men those who have worked
fractions of. days heretofore to get a
ten-hour day hereafter. -
All men aerving less than a year to
get : 20 cents an hour instead of 20
hereafter.
All regular men to get 21 cents on
hour Instead of 20 hereafter. . :
Men on snow plow and other work
of this character to get 25 cents an
hour.
All overtime work Is to be paid for at
the rate of 25 cents an hour hereafter.
(The men asked for 30 cents on hour.)
The 25 cents an hour applies to extra
men as well as old men now. .. This Is
considered a concession.
. The union is not recognized.
The oldest trolleymen to be given the
preference in runs and to be given all
the advantages that would naturally be
due them. -
The meeting was laudatory of Gen
eral Manager Funderford throughout.
Rev, Alexander F. Irvine, who Is an
honorary member of the Trolleymen's
union, made a . brief prayer' at the
opening . of the meeting and subse
quently counselled the men . against
taking any hasty action. Throughout
the meeting there . was absolutely no
talk of strike. The recent appearance
of Mr. Punderford, the energetic gen
eral manager of the road,, before the
men, and his. talk to them, on their
work, seemed to be, an upper current
throughout.. '.
The balloting on the various proposi
tions before the meeting was carried
through with cheers.
Committeeman. Dennis S, Fitzgerald,
the secretary of the union,; after-a
speech recommending the acceptance of
the company's terms, moved that a vote
of thanks be tendered the general man
ager. . The motion was carried unani
mously.
President Burke then made a speech
in which he lauded Mr.. Punderford and
told the men that they should follow
out the instructions given by the latter
at his recent address to them in Music
hall.
Ex-President Bernard M. Hope then
made a speech along the same lines.
At the conclusion a committee com
posed of Charles W. Minnlx, Dennis 8.
Fitzgerald, President Burke and Rev,
A. F. Irvine, members of the executive
committee, was appointed to acquaint
the general manager with the action of
the meeting. This was done with ap
plause, and the meeting was then ad
journed. ;
The committee met Mr. Punderford
at the offices of the Consolidated Rail
way company at 5 o'clock yesterday
morning, the latter being called out of
bed to meet them. '
COMPANY MADE PREPARATIONS.
The Consolidated Railway company
was disposed to take no chances upon
the action of the men, and made the
fullest preparations Saturday nlftht,
judging from reports from the mayor's
office and from the chief of police, look
lng for the fullest protection from the
bluecoats In case the road found itself
without its- regular men to handle its
cars yesterday.
The company asked for police protefr
tion from the mayor Saturday' after
noon, It is stated, in case such protec
tion should be necessary in handling its
cars in the event of a strike, and tt was
stated that there were a number' of
Plnkerton men on duty here. Recruits
from out of town were arranged for to
come to New Haven if needed.
