Borne good will come out of the
y radical character of the fine. It

form. From fear, if from no high
motive, business will be done on
re circumspect lines. This means
course, larger returns to stock and

licago and Alton preferred drop-

LAST PRICES LOWEST.
Speculative Sentiment Discouraged by
Standard Oil Decinlou.
New York, Aug. 6. The dullness of
the stock market was greatly intensi
fied to-day. This proved to be the
principal effect of the news develop
ments which the market had to face
this morning, although there was some
active selling at the" opening of the
market based on them and at the clos
ing in sympathy with the weakness of
U. S. Steel, when the decline became
precipitate. There seemed little dis
position to support the market just at
first and the break in prices in conse
quence, was sharp. The volume of the
selling proved light and after this spas
modic price readjustment, support ap
peared and some subsequent recovery.
Although the levying of maximum pen
alties on the Standard Oil Co. on the
convictions for rebating had been dis
cussed as apossibilityand had figured in
the speculation on Friday the actual
sentence of the court was not known
in Wall Street on Saturday in time to
afford opportunity for market opera
tions based on it. .
The effect was to revive the convic
tion of the determination of the federal
administration to push the pursuit of
corporations with unabated vigor.
From this view point of capital, great
Influence has been attributed to this
course In causing the deadlock In seek
ing new capital for enterprises. Specu
lative sentiment was therefore discour
aged. Saturday's bank statement off
ered small encouragement for more
cheerful views of the money outlook.. It
is expected thnt the loss In cash of last
week on the known movements of mon
ey, which failed of reflection in the
bank statement will be thrown over in
to this week's statement.1 Reports from
the Interior are of a sustained demand
for money which is likely to Increase
with the marketing of the crops. Rail
roads report the merchandise move
ment well kept up but not the grain. A
number of net earnings of railroads for
June were reported during the day and
some of the stocks of the companies
reporting suffered sharp declines. Re
ports of a threatened miners' strike in
the Pennsylvania coal regions were a
minor factor of depression. The labor
situation in the Lake Superior Iron re
gion was said to be working out satis
factorily and a point was made of the
large part played by the plans for a
new steel rail in the falling off of July
orders of the U. S. Steel corporation.
The stock weakened, however, late in
the day and renewed the weakness in
the general list after some recovery
from the first decline had been affected.
Tjast prices were the lowest of the
day artd represented losses running be
tween three and four points for Union
Pacific, Northern Pacific, St. Paul,
Reading and American Smelting, and
one to three points in the active list
generally. The bond market was more
actively easy to-day and declines were
general in the issues that usually figure
in the day to day trading. Total sales
par value $754,000. .
U. S. fours declined 1-4 per cent, on
call.
