Douglas Wardiop Editor of Radio Merchandising.) -. - - _ - -—---—I Diagram Showing the Kompentrol Connections. Note the Use of Six-Turn Primary to Prevent Resonance. By ROBERT LA MAR Hay by day engdieers of tlit* various radio manufacturing corporations are making improvements In circuits that have been standard for many years. Occasionally one of them stands out so prominently that it becomes an im portant factor in the Industry. The Kompentrol, the trade name of a new tuned radio frequency receiver, comes under this heading. Tlte performance of the receiver, one that employs live tubes. Is very much superior to many others in lids cate gory. This is a broad statement which unquestionably will arouse some dis sension, lint i( Is based on rigid com parative tests conducted by the writer in various localities, some of them tlie so-called dead spots of New York city. Most of the competing sets were "tint under the table" when it came to dis tant reception. The new set consists of two stages of tuned radio, a detector and two stages of audio. Admittedly, tlds is no cause for amazement, but tlie actual performance of ttie set is. Where the Set Differs. The basic ddference between tlie Kompentrol set ami t lie ordinary radio frequency amplifying set of tlie tuned type is shown in Klg. ‘2. It will lie seen that in the conventional radio amplifier the low potential sides of both radio frequency primaries are big. i—Snow.ng tut ivompentrol, Hav ing Variable Plate Resistor. connected to the “U'' bittlery plus utn pliflei* post. In tills receiver, however, they go to one end of 11 variable ltHl-oiiin rheo stat, while the oilier end goes to the ‘‘i.!’ battery amplifier, in other words. <i variable resistor is inserted in series with the primaries of the radio fre quency transformers. The lirst thought the technical ratlio fan is likely to get is that tlie resist ance is put into tlie circuit to introduce losses nnd suppress oscillations. This is not true. In fact. It is the reverse. Actual operation shows that the more resistance one Introduces into the pri mary circuit llie more the set oscillates. In other words, we have a common re generation control for the two stages of radio frequency. The action of the variable 100-ohm resistance may seem uncanny to many builders, hut n study of the underlying theory will take all the mystery, out of it. The radio amplifier is built so that it is highly improbable that any res onnnee can take place, making the amplifier itself non-oscillating. The resistance may he more properly termed a reactance of variable choke, j It is a conceded fact that a choke coll ! introduced in the plate circuit will re tard the radio frequency currents and therefore throw tite set into oscillation, ('onsequently, if the reactor, or choke, he variable, the oscillation point of the amplifier can he adjusted to accommo date all wave lengths. Actual Kesuits. Selectivity imu sensitivity go hand in hand. A receiver cannot he really efficient and not tie selective; the re verse is irue, also. The sensitivity of the set may be accounted for by the ability to keep the receiver on the hiss ing point at ail wave lengths by a sim ple control. '1 lie selectivity is far bel ter titan a neutrodyne because of the lower coupling employed. This is im perative bemuse of the fact that tlie radio frequency primaries must have six turns so that resonance cannot lie obtained. If you are desirous of constructing a set of this type, the circuit diagram of Fig. 1 should le.td you on the right track. A list of the necessary parts used by the writer follows: Three spiderweb colls for usual tuned It. F. amplifiers. Three 17-plate (.0003) variable con densers. One 0-ohtu Amsco rheostat for four tubes. One 20-olun rheostat for detector. One 100-ohm rheostat or 200-ohm , potentiometer (Amsco). One double circuit Jack. One single circuit jack. One 7 by 18 bakelite panel (black or maboganite). One (Hi by 17 bakelite baseboard. Three 4-inch Freshman dials. One .0005 tixed condenser. one .00025 grid condenser with 2 megohm leak. One .00(5 mfd. Duhilier condenser. One .01 mfd. fixed condenser. Two audio transformers. One battery switch. Seven binding posts (preferably marked). Twelve lengths bus-bar. Sundries such us screws, nuts, an gles. etc. A little confusion might arise about the spiderweli coils. They may lie ob tained front your radio dealer if you know what to ask for. They are called j tuned radio frequency coils of the non- ! oscillating type. Usually the primaries I have 15 turns—but no matter Imw many turns on »lie primary they will lie all right. Make sure that the secondary has (55 turns, fer a greater or lesser number of turns will not cover the band of wave lengths on the usual coil and con denser; of course a turn or two out of the way matters hut little. Remove sufficient turns front the primaries of two of the colls so that only six turns will remain on each, the third one re maining as purchased. Coil Supports. Thp coils should he fnster.eil with little pieces of rubber so that the flat area is at right nng'es to the panel, It being preferable that ttie coils bo mounted on top of the condenser, to 1 make them the highest unit In the set. The unhampered coll having a 15-turn primary is fastened to tlie first eon denser, i. e„ tlie one on the extreme left of the set facing from tlie from. Tile other two coils should he mounted In a similar manner, the order of mounting making no difference since they are similar.—New York Telegram Why Your Aerial May Be Inside or Outside Which is better, the inside or the outside antenna'! If the wire is not too long to he stretched out in a room it makes little difference whether it is actually Inside or outside, unless the walls contain a great deal of metal, such as steel or other metal conductors of electriety. In other words, one may shield an an tenna from the radio waves by drain ing these waves off through other near by electrical conductors, but an an tenna cannot be insulated from these waves. Glass, wood, brick, etc., do not stop the waves, but if all the win dows were made of metal and the walls were also of metal no radio waves would get inside. To Stop Radiation A single stage of radio-frequency amplification added in front of your single-circuit receiver will cut out radiation from your antenna. The radio-frequency amplifier Itself should never be allowed to oscillate, however. BLACK-EYED SUSANS The black-eyed Susans are those lovely flowers which grow in the fields inMhe summer. They are tlie bright, bright golden flowers, a ricli yellow orange color. In the center of every flower it Is black, quite black. And so they can always be quite easily told from any of the other glorious wild flowers which can he fount) In the summer months. One day a little fairy bopped on one of the flowers. It was many years ago, and she had been playing In a brook where there was some soft, rich mud. She had not been flying around, you see. but simply enjoying the cool mud on iter dttle white feet and she would let it go between her little toes anti say: “Ah, this is so cooling on a hot day. Soon I will go in the stream up yonder anti bathe my feet with the clear water there.” But just as she was about to go up lo the stream, she heard the wind whispering some secrets to the wild flowers. Anti then the wind saitl, "I.ittle Fairy, come and hear the fun. The sun litis been cracking such jokes! Watch tlie flowers laugh. I am telling some they can't hear. Do rou see t lie flowers shaking their a ends? "They are laughing so much." The little fairy forgot that her feet were inuddy anti rushed to the field where the wind and sun were making Hie flowers laugh. “Come and rest on me,” asked one of tlie yellow flowers which are now called the black-eyed Susans. And up she hopped on top of the glorious yellow flower. Her feet were held close together and she stood very straight, her wings holding tier up a good deal, for she did not want to bend too heavily on the kind flower. The fields were full of laughter and sunshine and sweet whispers that day. But after awhile the sun grew tired md went to bed. “The flowers must sleep too,” said the wind, as lie began to move away. And the little fairy hopped down to Every Fairy Hopped on a Flower. the ground. Then, to her horror, she saw the mud spot where her feet had | been in the center of the flower. She gave a low cry and the Fairy Queen with nil the other fairies caine ! rushing to the rescue. The Fairy j Queen soon saw what had happened. “We will fix it," she said. Then site bent over the flowers, and whispered to them. “It is all right,” she said, after a moment. "The flowers tell me," said the Fairy Queen, "that they would all like to have black centers. They think it | would make them look more interest ; hig. So every little fairy must go mud-wading and each one come back to hop on a flower, keeping right in the center. Soon they were back and every fairy hopped on a flower. From that day to this all the flowers j have grown up with black centers, I and so the black-eyed Susans, or ox eyed daisies as they are sometimes called are truly flowers of Fairyland. It was this story that tile Fairy ! Queen told to all in Fairyland and j Brownieland and Elflund one winter night. But they had gone river to a very warm part of the country—a part of the country where the roses grew in the winter lime. And they were full of summer thoughts and talked of all the differ ent Fairyland and Floworland adven tures there hud been through the j years. This was one of the Fairy Queen’s favorite stories. She was so pleased that It had all turned out this way. It had been so wonderful of the flowers to act as they had. But then that was the way it was. Often when people didn't make a fuss they found they enjoyed themselves much more. So had the flowers kept from mak ing a fuss and then they had found they really were having more fun if they all had the same little fairy foot-prints. “Ah," said the Queen of the Fairies, "what beautiful flowers they are too. "But I love the flowers everywhere - everywhere they seem to belong to the part of the country where they live "And if from one end of the world to the other it were all the same It would not be nearly so interesting as to have stretches of country so differ ent from each other that it almost seems like a different world."
