CIVICS DEPARTMENT
The Civics Department of the Worn-1
an’s Club of Cliffside Park will hold a
meeting on Thursday, April 22, at 3
p. m., at the home of Mrs. J. White, 19
Columbia avenue, Grantwood.
Mrs. J. C. Vosburgh will speak on
“High Spots in Legislation.”
SIXTH DISTRICT CONFERENCE
Fourteen club members from Cliff
side Park attended the Sixth District
conference in Hasbrouck Heights on
Thursday, and greatly enjoyed the all
day session.
Among the seven club presidents
who each gave a two-minute address
on a “Key to Success,’’ was Mrs. Hall,
president of the Cllffside Park club.
Tile local club had the pleasure, at the
roll call for the Music Studio, of an
swering with the last of their quota
for this object.
Those who attended from town'
were Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Best, Mrs.
Burns, Mrs. Conroy, Mrs. Vosburgli,
Mrs. Kuenstler, Mrs. Wright, Mrs.
McDonald, Mrs. Berls, Mrs. White,
Mrs. Banville, Mrs. Josephson, Mrs.
Malton and Mrs. Donaldson.
LITERATURE DEPARTMENT
With an attendance of all but two
of its active members, the Literature
Department of the Woman's Club of
Cliffside Park had a delightful meet
ing on Monday at the home of Mrs.
M. Yaeger, having postponed from
their regular day in order to attend
the Sixth District conference.
Mrs. Yaeger was assisted as hostess
by Mrs. Leopold, Mrs. Braddon and I
Mrs. Fuller, and served an excellent :
luncheon.
The department voted to have an 1
entertainment in the near future for
the benefit of the clubhouse fund, and 1
to leave all arrangements to the Dra
matic Committee. Several of the mem
bers accepted the Invitation given to
attend the meeting of the "Life as a
Fine Art’’ club at the Hotel Commo
dore on Wednesday, at which the
hostess had been a guest the month
before and greatly enjoyed.
Mrs. Benda and Mrs. Banvllle gave
a report of the art exhibit in Palisade.
The poetry period was occupied by
Mrs. White giving a resume of the life
of James Russell Lowell and Mrs.
Peddle reading his poem, “The Search
for the Holy Grail.”
On motion by Mrs. Leopold, voted I
that the chairman of department not
serve as a hostess, on account of her
other duties.
Current Topics were presented by
Mrs. Benda, and these and the book
review brought out much interested
discussion, especially as much of an
cient history and discoveries was in
volved.
The book reviewed was "The Lost
Atlantis,” reviewed by Miss Edna
Perry, and proved a fascinating topic
involving a lost race and continent.
The chairman, Mrs. Donaldson, was
re-elected for the coming year.
Dumb Dora thinks a "wave length”
has something to do with marcelling.
Seymour Sears and
H. L. Post Say Trolley
Service Is Very Poor
Seymour X. Sears, prominent resi
dent of ClifTside Park, was present at
the meeting of the local Mayor and
Council on Monday evening and pro
tested vigorously against the trolley
service being rendered to the citizens
of the borough by the Public Service
Railway Co. He said that the ser
vice today is worse than it was eight
een years ago and told of waiting
twenty minutes for a Forty-second
street ferry car at 9 o’clock in the
morning and after the wait being
greeted by a car labeled, ‘‘Car Barn.”
Mr. Sears asked if an effort could
not be made to have some of the lux
urious inter-city busses pass through
Cliffside Park and pick up and dis
charge passengers therein.
Collector Herbert L. Post also criti
cized the trolley service and agreed
with Mr. Sears that it is worse than
it was eighteen years ago.
A general discussion on busses fol
lowed in which former Mayor Cadien,
Councilman Frank Meyer and several
citizens took part.
No action was taken one way or the
other but the complaints were regis
tered on the minutes of the meeting.
