That after giving one week's notice in each of the papers printed la the city of Mobile, we will cause legal proceedings tj l»e instituted against any and all persons who are at the end of that time found \ ((dat ing the laws. If aiy master or owner of a slave, shal license such slavi to go at large and trade as a free man, the master >r owner shall forfeit and pay tin sum of fifty dollar, one moiety to the use ofanypei* sou suing for the tame, and the other moiety to tie use of the territory; and if after conviction, sue* slave shall l»e foils! so going at large and trading the master or ovirseer shall again be liable to tie like |>enalty, to berecovered as aforesaid, and so,is often after convictou as such slave shall be found 10 going at large and trading. Sec. 14. If any person shall permit his or h*r slave to go at large, or hire him or herself out, eve y person or persons so offending shall forfeit and jay to the use of tile territory, the sum of fifty dollars;— and it shall be lawfil for any person to apprehanl and carry such slaie liefore a justice of the peace,in the county or corpcralion where apprehended, audit* it shall appear to tie justice that such slave cones within the purview of this act, he shall order liimir her to the jail of tf • county or corporation, thereto be safely kept lint! the next court, when, if it shill be made to appeal to the court, that the slave so or dered to jail hath been permitted or suffered to hre him or herself out, contrary to the meaning of tils act, the court shill immediately proceed to enter ip judgment, and award execution against such offendir for the amount ofsaid forfeiture with costs: Provided That if the owns- or holder of such slave or slavw shall enter into iito bond before said justice, pavabe to the governor aid his successors in office, withsif j licient security, in double the amount of said forfeit ure, conditioned to appear at next county court of tie proper county, b do and receive what shall be eiv joined him by tie court, theu such slave may he sui fered to reniairwith his or her owner. »K.
