Some ten or twelve years ago an in
cident happened at Gibraltar which il
lustrates tho practical views of a certain
class of people. A subaltern named
O'Donohuo was tho ofllcer of tho guard
at the Elphinstonc Guard. At this
point of tho wor'd-known rock
there is a sheer drop of over 1000 feet.
A Lieutenant who had taken too much
champagno at a mess dinner walked
over tlie rock and undoubtedly was dead

When the ofllcer of tho guard came to
fill in his report and reached tho ques
tion, "Has anything extraordinary
happened while you were officer of tho
guard?" he wrote in tho blank spaco re
served for the answer, "Nothing."
Of course he was summoned before

of Gibraltar. When ho appeared Lord
Nanicr asked :
"You were tho oflicer of the guard at
