AH over California nntl perhaps in every oho of tho Pacific states men aro living today who remember tho wonder ful feat of horsem.in.shii) known .n9 "Bill Lowtlcn's Riilo," which was per formed thirty-soven years ago, Tehama, on tho Sacrnmonto river, was tlio start ing point: Wenvorville, in Trinity coun ty, tho terminal one. Tho distance was a good 100 miles, most of tho last foity being mado in tho night over mountain trails and through heavy timber. Tito distanco was accomplished in iivo hours and thirteen minutes unexampled time lor n rule or 100 consecutivo miles un der existing circumstances. Wo let Mr. Lowdcn tell tho story of his wild ride. "In tho latter iart of tho year 1831 Adams fc Co. and Wells, Fargo & Co., the rival express companies, with Cram, Rodgcrs & Co. and Rhodes fc Whitney, tho connecting companies between Shasta and Weavervillo, commenced racing their expresses with horseback messengers. After many hard races had been run, first one and then tlio other winning, in December, 1SJJ, it seemed to havo been arranged by tho chief compauies that thoy would run tho president's messago from San Fran cisco to Portland on tho arrival of the mail btenmer and then stop racing. "Great preparations were mado for the race, and all tho fast horses along tho road were pressed into service. As high as $100 was paid to owners of hores for tho privilege of riding thorn from three to live miles. Everything was in readiness about tho 28th of December. Horses were placed about four mile apart by each company, every liorso hav ing n man to euro for him, with an extra horso to rido himself. At least that U tho way I had my stock nrranged. Both relays of horses were under haddlo from tho 23th day of December, 1831, until tho 2d day of January, 1W3, on which date I mado my part of the raco. I rodo for Adams & Co. "Tho raco was n very close one from San Francisco to Tehama. Wells, Fargo & Co. led toMarysville. Between Marys villo and Tehama Lusk, Adams & Co.'s messenger passed Wells, Fargo & Co.'s rider, and tho Mexican who took tho bags from Lusk reached Tehama first and crossed to tho Tehama sido of tho river just as Wells, Fargo & Co.'s mes senger arrived at tho opposite bank and jumped into tho boat. "Now my race commenced. I sprang into tho saddle, with saddlebags weigh ing fifty-four pounds, nud rodo nineteen horses to Shasta- without touching tho ground but once during that part of tho race. That was at tho Pralrlo House, where Tom Flinn, tho mau iu chargo of jny horse, had got into a fight with tho man who kept Wells, l-argo !: Co.: horso, aud had let my horso (Tom Ma Turk's gray) get loose. 1 uaw tho bitua tion. and riding my tired horso a little past whero tho fight was going on, sproug to tho ground, caught tho fresh horso by tho tail as ho was running away from mo and went into tho saddlo over his rnmp. I turned to tho horso I had jnst left with tho express bags, pulled them over to my fresh horeo and went on. I lost about ono minuto here. AH other changes 1 made while tho horses were running, tho keeper leading tho horso 1 was to rido and riding his extra ono. 1 could make my coining known with a whistlo about one-half milo be fore reaching tho change-giving amplo timo to tighten tho cinch and start the fresh hor.so on tho road, and by the timo I overtook him the keeper would hav my horso in a gallop. "I reached Shasta -sixty miles in twv hours and thirty-seven minutes. I was dotained thero about two minutes to di vido tho exnrcss matter, I taking tho Weaverville portion and Jack Horsely tho through pouch for Portland. I had nino change, of horses between Shasta nnd Weavervillo and reached tho latter place in five hours and thirteen minutes from tho time i left Tehama, tront Shasta to Weavervillo, forty miles, tho rido was mado after dark, with a light snow falling, but when I reached tho mountains and had my faithful horses to ride Wildcat, Comanche, Greyhound, Pompey, Jack nnd tho Bill Klix herso a little snow did not make much timer enco in speed. But I was myself in bad condition at tho end of this ride. I had lost my cap aud my hair was a fcolid mass of ice. I wore no clothing except flannel drawers, undershirt and boots, nnless my belt, with pistol and knife, might bo considered clothing. Tho cold first seemed to penetrate mo when I throw tho express bags into tho oflko at Weavervillo. I had not felt it before "1 was ho far ahead of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s messenger at Shasta that thoy stopped tho raco so far as that company was concerned. It was well that they stopped, for Jack Horsely mado a splendid rido to Yreka, and was half way to that place when Wells, Fargo & Co.'s messenger reached Shasta. My stock and help for this raco cost Adams & Co. about $3,200. 1 mado other races, long nnd short, but considering the weicht 1 carried, tho weather and tho timo of day that I mado it, I havo nl ways believed this to bo my host ono." More maybe said in regard to tho narrator's condition on arriving at Weavervillo. Tho five hours' strain on nervo, mind nnd iiiuseln had tiroduced i. i. ....., i tt ... .1...,.
