TIIE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN: FRIDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER 16, 1892. MRS. HARRISON'S CASE, A Conference of Physicians Yesterday. Thoy Aro Encouraged by tho Cir cumstance That She Is Not Growing Worso. Look Lake, Sept. 15. Frees. Mrs. Harrison, is ter this morning. -Associated slightly bet- Dr. Doughty, tho Now York special ist, mado another call on Mrs. Harri son this afternoon, downs joined by Dr. Gardner, tho intending physicinn. The two physicians inadu an examina tion o( the invalid. Doughty agreed entirely with Dr. Gardner's diagnosis of tho case and sub sequently informed the family that he saw no appreciable difference in Mrs. Harrison's condition since former ob servations yesterday. He said she was A9 comfortable as she could bo made and it is oncouraging to know the dis ease has made no progress within the last twentylfour hours. HI I.I. KIVAL.S TUK Ml' II I NX. Mr. l'urroj-, the Llrlt of Ills FrlrntU, In Talk for Illm. New Yons, Sept. 15. Associated Iross. Henry D. Purroy has guaran teed that Senator Hill is all right. So far everybody has given the ssmo as surance except the senator himself. He has usually been considered to know his own mind and docs so now proba bly. In any event even his enemies, except the anti-Snappers, agree that he has acted in a most dignified manner Bince the Chicago convention, whoro hn was humiliated and his followers in Bulled. Some of these appear to be ready to forgot tho contumely and possibly tho Benator himself will do so. In nuy event he is not l'kely to humblo him self by seeking thel'rophet's house and table. Senator Hill has bought a house in Albany and, like everything else ho does, it has caused wonder ns to his in tentions. The idea of his possible mar riage is scouted, yet it might not be a bad idea for him to take a partner. It is more probable, however, that he has purchased the houso so that his trips to Albany for the next tnoanda half years, whilo Flower's term con tinues will bo the visits tf'a man to liia home. This would subdue the criticism to which he was subjected last winter when ho visited tho state capital whilo tho electron cases were going on. How hard tho Peck teport struck the Democratic National committee it shown by Josiah Quincy's attempt to compel Commissioner Peck to disclose the names of the people who furnished tho information. Straightout Demo crats do not take any stock in tho re port, as they intend to let tho tarifT slide in Now York and dovoto their at tention to tho Force bill scarecrow. ATIIOLBSALK KOIIIIEKY. Sertoli Charge Acalnst u Nebraska Comity Treasurer. Hastikos, Nob., Sept. 15. Associat ed Press. Ex-Deputy County Treasur er Emanuel Fist has given to the public his statement of tho county treasury muddle, aud to say that it is sensational is to put It in mild language. If he can prove ono half of what he alleges as truo, the Adams county treasurer's office was the scene of -corruption almost beyond dectription. The whole scandal began whilo the new court house was being built. Paul was interested in a brick yard, nnd county treasurer beforo tho bonds voted by tho supervisors had been ne gotiated. Paul hud drawn out (20,000 for use in tho yard, and this sum had never been entered on the books or returned into tho treasury. When he took the office he had but little prop erty. To Bhow where the monev went Fist said that $22,000 was stink in the brick yard, $11,000 had gone to M Bostwick, president of the defunct City National bank; $15,000 had beeu lost in real estate speculation during the boom, $3,000 had been lost in PaulV Mexican mine, which had been left him by Ex-Congressman Laird, and that from $5,000 to $8,000 had been loaned to political friends. In order to cover up his tracks, Paul, he alleged, burned in the furnace all the checks for a considerable period representing the above sums. Fist wa all the time kept in the dark ns to tlin transactions, but twice he protected tho county by telling Paul frankly that unless certain matters wero made right he would divulge the discrepancies to the proper authorities. l'aul was treasurer from 1888 to 18P2 and Fist was his deputy. Mr. FiststateH in conversation that he will show where $8J,OO0 of the county's money has gone, mo j;,wu additional being lor lees, etc. MICS. TAYLOR ACQUITTED. Shot Her Slanderer While He Stood In alde the Jail Door. San Anqelo, Tex., Sept. 15. Asso ciated Press. Mrs. Lonnie Taylor was tried and acquitted in tho District court at Sherwood, Iron county, yester day for killing J. L. Wilson in tho county jail there several months ago. Tho defense pleaded insanity. Wilson was confined in the t-horwood jail charted with maliciously slandering the defendant's reputation. Mrs. Tay lor secured a pistol and secroted her self behind the jail door leading up to the main entrance, and when the jailer came with the prisoners' mail she followed him upstairs and fired twice over tho jailer's shoblder just as ho oponed the Jail door, killing Wilson instantly. Mrs. Taylor then passed in to the jail with the smoking pistol in his hand, laughingly remarking that she had done effective work. BOrFOCVTED IN A WELL. Clin, rerrlmuml Olrei III Mfo for Ill llrnther'a. TACOMA.Sept. 15. Associated Press. Charles Perrimond, a Swiss, aged 30 years, lost his life whilo rescuing his brother Altho from a well, south of Lake Park, and was buried today at Roy. Charles and his wife and Altho and his sister lived on tho rench owned by Theodore Gibbons. Tho ranch woll, PRICES (S Uwd in Million! of Home which ib twenty-feet deep, became dry recontly and the men dug It from twenty to thirty-live feet deop. Tho work was hampered by carbonic acid gas, nnd wood was burned in tho woll to prevent suffocation. On Wednesday Charles cleaned out tho bottom of the well, while the women worked tho windlass nt the top. Expecting to bo in the well but a short timo, ho did not light the fire, and was suffocated by tho Ens. Hone Killed by Lightning. Bloominoton, III., Sept. 15. From 8 to 10 o'clock tonight a fearful Btorm of rain and electricity raged in this vicin ity. A creat amount of water fell. Several horses wero killed by lightning in tho country near town and several men were shocked severely. The farm ers are afraid the rain will be followed by a kilfine frost, which will destroy the corn, nono of which is out of dan ger. CHE WAS SHOT. Hut the Missile Was Projected Harmless Alrguiu by "I had a curious experience while passing through New York," said a western lady to somo friends on tho beach at Newjwrt. "Wo had taken rooms nt tho B k, nnd unfortunately reached Now York just in timo for an absolutely torrid 'hot wave.' As I had pressing need for a few days shopping I kept my husband nnd brother in town for forty-eight hours, to their great dis comfort, and they Bpcnt their evenings by the windows of our sitting room In the lightest of attire, drinking iced drinks nnd trying vainly to keep cool. Tho night beforo wo left town wo re tired rather Into, after tho men had been solacing themselves in their nsual fashion. " 'It was so hot that it was some time beforo I could sleep, nnd just as I was dozing off I remembered that 1 hod left my rings on tho drebsiug table near the sitting room door, the windows of which wero wide open on a littlo iron balcony. A good chunco for robbers,' I thought drowsily, but was too lazy to get up to put thorn in a safer place. Late in tho night I was urou&ed by tho report of a pistol, or what Bounded liko ono; and my first imprcssiou was that I was shot, for I was literally bathed, head and shoulders, in something thai I felt euro for tho moment was blood. "'Henry,' I screamed, 'I have boon shotl I am dying.' And I felt so strange and giddy that I was suro my end was approaching. 'Tuko good caro of the children,' 1 murmured. 'And, oh, Henry, promise me not to marry that horrid Miss M that you beem to ad- iniro so much!' 'What nonsense, Etui' eaid my callous spouse, as ho struck a light and tumed on tho gas, 'you have been dreaming.' "'But I am wet with bloodl' I ex claimed indignautly, feeling that after all ho wasn't worthy of a tender death bed sceno, and that I felt nil right again. 'By Jove, you aro moist,' ho said, put ting his hand ou my shoulder, 'but It is not blood, whatever it is.' Suddenly ho gavo a great guffaw of laughter and pointed to tho parlor, which was dimly lighted by tho gasjot in my room. 'Woll, what is it? I don't seo any 'thing,' I put in crossly, for by this time I felt thoroughly upset. " 'Oh, it is too delicious,' he gasped. 'Yon havo been shot, you poor little thing, but not by burglars; only by a soda water bottlo, and there on tho table, whoro he and my brother Harry had left them, lay a couple of bottles, one point' ing as straight for my bed ns if it had been aimed ut roe. Henry had cut the wires confining the cork of ono of the bottles nnd had then conclnded not to opon it, and I mipposothe heat may havo helped tho effervescence, for the force of the explosion carried both cork and the soda water across tho room, hitting mo on tho shoulder. "Of course you may imagine how my two men enjoyed my 'shooting affair' and what capital thoy have mado out of it." New York Tnbuno. Tho Value of Llino Water. The value of limo water about the houso in tho summer can scarcely bo overestimated. To prepare it is an easy matter, as all that is necessary is to put a layer of unslaked llmo in a wide mouthed jar nnd fill it with cold wafer. There is no danger of using too much limo, as the water will only take np so much, however much is put in. It takes only a few hours for the water to take up all the lime that is possible. After it has stood say five hours tho wa ter may be drained off and more wa ter added until tho limo is all absorbed. Acidity of tho stomach is corrected by adding a littlo limo water to tho drink ing water. A tcaspoonful of lime water added to a glass of milk corrects the tendency which milk ha3 to coagulate in tho stomach, forming a hard, indi gestible mass. For this reason it should bo added to tho milk fed tho littlo children, and nursing bottles should be rinsed with it. As a mild disinfectant thcro is nothing safer or better. Columbus' Idea of tho World. Columbus belioved-tho solid part of the sphere to bo larger than the liqnid part, and tho distance by tho sunset road between tho East Indies and western Europe to bo less than it is. But in those two capital errors lay tho great iucentivo to tho execution and suc cess of his puritose. Had he known tho vast planetary spaces covered by the waters; tho continent interposed be tween his own Europe and tho land of diamonds, gold and spices; tho difficulty and peril of tho passago yet to bo braved in tho far regions of tho antarctic pole In order to sail from our continental Eu rope to tho oriental Indies by tho west ern way, he would perhaps havo shrunk back in alarm and dread. Thcso aro questions that are as difficult to solve as somo of the astronomical problems." Philadel phia Press. Hound to Come. Tho coat of arms of Kentucky is two ziicn standing with clasped hands under the motto, "United wo stand, divided wo fall." Ono of theso men on tho coat of arms should bo given his walking papers and a woman put in his place. Tho world is growing older and wiser, and f the decroo has gono forth that women aro ono-half tho people. Tho decree has not reached Kentucky yet, but it is on tho way, and when it arrives tho Ken tucky legislature will order a new coat of arms for tho state, a man nnd a wom an clasping hands under tho motto, "Unitod wo stand, divided wo fall." Peoplo grow in this world, whether they want to or not; and the day is com ing when Kentucky men will stand shoulder to shoulder with tho men of Wyoming on the question of equal rights. It is only a matter of education. Mrs. Josephine K. Henry in Southern Journal. Volta's Discoveries. Volta, an Italian, made the discovery that two or more different metals nro necessary in tho production of electric ity. Ho constructed the "battery" or pile of silver and zinc, with soveral lay ers oi moistened papor between them, and with this simplo experiment ho pro duced all tho samo effects of electricity and currents as powerful as electricity produced by friction of glass and sul phur or by amber. This is tho origin of what wa3 known ns tho "voltaio pilo," which was improved by experimenting with other substances, nnd by Volta himself. Instead of tho two pieces of metal and moistened paper, ho placed metal ships in cups of water and produced grand re sults. Very littlo improvement has been mado in tho voltaio pile, and today it is -littlo changed from its first invention. Now York Tologram. What Americans Want. Miss North, tho author of "Recollec tions of a Happy Lifo," camo to Amor ica and found her father's young gar dener in New Jersey. He asked her to send homo to get recommendations as to his qualifications. Ho had brought with him ono which said ho was "honest and industrious." Ho told her this sort of thing did not amount to much. No one cared to read that, as tho country itself mado ono industrious. What Americans wanted to know, he said, was whothera man had the qualifications necessary to get along. The inquiry was, "What do you know?" More Than the Ship Can Carry. The Japanese havo a remarkablo ar rangement that scoops vast quantities of fish into an enormous bag of netting hanging beneath tho bottom of a vessel. In this receptaclo something like thirty times tho cargo can bo conveyed to market than could bo carried by tho ship in tho ordinary way. Further more, the merchandise is by this method brought into port allvo and conse quently fresh. Pittsburg Dispatch. Aud Sticking- to It.
