Jlen are milking dog- msjand ecclesiastical forms eubonllnato tdTthff great central idea of holy liviuR. In all the great denominations of Chris tendom this great central idea is advanc ing that, after whatever a man may think and whatever forms lie may adopt, character, good living, a life of hon esty, justice, love, a lifo devoted to tho highest and noblest ideals, is the essen tial thing in practical Christianity." Ho was born in Kensington, N. II., Sept. 23, 1815, and was graduated from Harvard divinity school with the hi .ch est honors of his class in 18-12. He went to CQhasset to teach nnd was called to preach. In 1844 ho married Ellen Dev ereus Sewell, who is still with him, and they have living niuo children and sev enteen grandchildren. Among other reminiscences he gave these: When I raino hero to preach there never had been a carpet on theso aisles. Wo had no organ; an orchestra assisted the choir. Thoro were people who could distinctly remember the Rorolutio'i iiy war. Last spring a couple came to inn to be married. Tho groom belonged to a family for whom I had performed pas toral duties for either funerals or wed dings in six generations, and tho bride also belonged to a family in which I had had the same exjierience, and performed parochial duties for six generations. There was no important busines then except fishing, about fifty vessels go ing out in the spring to fish. This gave employment to a great many, including coopers and sailmakers, while many others, by rigid economy and hard work, made a respectable living on their farms. In those times the Congregational soci eties were state societies. Men were compelled to pay for support of minis try, and to pay their taxes for support of preaching, as they were for all other needs of the town. A lMstlnsiilshed Trench Stutrimun. The newspapers have had very little to say of Edouard Valery Gressier, who died recently, nnd yet ho was, one of France's most able statesmen. Ho was born in 1815, was educated in the law and in science, and becamo early in life counselor and advocate of the ministry of finance. Afterward he was elected a member of the council general for tho canton of Corbie. He became a govern ment deputy in tho corps legislatif in 1804, and served on several important committees of that body, notably those having charge of the budget and of the law of military organization. M. Gres sier was called to the ministry of agri culture, commerco and public works in 1608, and in that offico gave espicial at tention to the organization of higher in struction in agriculture and reform of farm schools. He was named a senator by decree on Dec. 28, lfcCO. After the fall of tho empiro ho resumed his place at the bar of Paris. Tliu Lens anil hliort cif It. The emperor of Germany, as every body knows, is n 6oldier from tho crown of his head to the soles of his feet. Any thing appertaining to the army interests him. He has just placed uon the wall of his study n largo photograph of which he is very proud. It is a portrait, half life size, of tho biggest .inil the smalh st soldier of the Prussian army standiag sido by side. Tho former is Private Pritzchan, of tho First regiment of Ibo Prussian gnard. Ho stands 0 feet 7 inches in lib boots, and when ho pre seute'd himself at Dus'.eldorf for exami nation a special apparatus had to be pro vided with which to take his waist measure His breadth is in proper pro portion to his height. The miallest soldier is tho hereditary princ3. The picture is a unique one, showing a ver itable giant, quite equal to any that fig ure in "Grimm's Taies" or other bnokri of fables, and by his sido a soldierly lilliputian. Ileal White Tonkin.. It has generally been considered that white foxskms were of tho same mythi cal naturo as chickens' teeth, but a Van couver furrier was exhibiting a short time ago what ho claimed were the pelts of five white foxes. Tho man is an ex pert naturalist and has been dealing in furs in tho northwest for forty years. He says theso are the first white foxes ho over heaid of, but hois absolutely sure tho pelts aro genuine foxskins. Tho conformation has been carefnlly preserved, and tho big brush is of course attached. The fur is snow white, spotless and beautifully soft. Tho fur rier bought them from a seal hunter, who caught the foxes at the last station to the north of eastern Siberia, several hundred miles north of Petropaulovuky. i7th of July, iwa. Among the processes for fireprooting to winch the attention of the directors of the Berlin exposition was recently drawn, and for which awards havelieen declared, are the following: For light tissues, a composition consisting of six teen pounds nnimoniuni sulphates, live pounds ammonium carbonate, four pounds borax, si i pounds boric acid, four pounds starch or ono pound dextrine or one pound gelatine and twenty-five gal lons water, mixed together, heated to 8(1 degs. Unequnrtof this mixtuie, costing only a few cents, is sufficient to impregnate fifteen yards of material. For curtain materials, theatrical decorations, wood nnd furniture, thirty pounds ammo nium chloride aro mixed with so much floated chalk as to give the mass con sistency, and it is then heated to from 12.1 degs. to l.U degs.
