An Occasion of Turmoil and
Bloodshed.
Francisco Makos a Narrow Escapo
From an Irajo Father-In-Law.
Yesterday wns Ygnneio'e day, a holi
day quite regularly observed but not eo
prominent aa the Fourth of July or

tin's office, covered with blood from
head to foot and swore out a complaint
against his father-in law, Ygnacio
Mores and his two sons. Victor and
Louis, who uero charted with assault
with intent to kill. Francisco says he
was on a friendlv drunk with Ins kins
men when the old man became enraged
and struck him on the head with a six
shooter, cutting an ugly gash and sat
urating his clothing with the carmine
liquid of combativeness. Francisco, re
alizing ho had the worst of it, made a
good run for his life and his intoxicated
condition probably assisted turn in
dodging the leaden missiles that were

A warrant was soon ont for the arrest
of the assaulting parties wtho were cele

Francisco was at first puzzled'toTcnow
whether he was struck in tho lad or
was shot, as the pommelinc and -shoot

The first game between the String
town and Tucson nines was a complete
surprise to the South Side. Our boys
are all right for town ball or a game
with Fbsenix, but are hayseeds com
pared with tho Tucson lads.
Fritx Bexkenkaiup was severely in
jured on Saturday evening by his horse
falling on him. He wes brought to
town aod patched up by 'two of -the
leading physicians -of tho town. While
his injuries are not necessarily fiitalor
even eerious they are exasperating.

the valley that equals in wealth and excels in extent the
historical tract given by the great Lawgiver, while standing
on the declivity overlooking the promised region of milk,
honey and grapes,. Tempe is readily designated as the gate
way to the highly favored agricultural paradise.
To the south and southeast vast areas of golden cereals,
now undergoing the process of harvesting and threshing is
a pleasing sight while the roads leading to the town are
lined with teams and wagous employed in conveying the
merchantable article to the immense warehouses for storing
and shipment later in tho season.
Correlative to the grain fields, are the alfala meadows ;
from which the second cutting is already in stack. The!.,
loiig ricks of hay thickly scattered throughout the enclosures, I IIP
give the town the appearance, at'a distance, of a succession
of villages with verdant lawns betwoen the massive build
ings, interspersed among the grain fields.
A look toward the east and northeast shows tho orchard
country in the center of which, Mesa, a neat and rapidly
growing town of good promise, is plainly visible. In this
eoctien, the farms appear smaller and while there are many
fields -of grain, meadows of alfalfa and pastures of greater or
lessestent, in which sloek horses and fat cattle, are peace
fully remniating. the greater portion of the farms are
devoted to fruit growing. Here is the paradise of the gen
tlemen of agriculture. Vineyards of raisin grapes and or
chards laden with apricots, peaches, oranges, figs, dates,
almonds .and every variety of fruit growing in a frostless re
gion, are grown in shipping quantities, while the winecellars
of the Hill City are famous throughout the southwest.
All this country is tributary to Tempe, the only ship
ping point south of Salt River, and the growth of any por
tion of the visible area described means increased business
to Tempo and insures it to remain the metropolis of the
South bide.
Besides the agricultural which will always insure the
maintenance of this prosperous town, Tempe is" the educa
tion center of Arizona. Tho territorial Nnrnml c,.l.i
institution of which every citizen may well feel proud, is
pumiuiiumiy located Here and a new building costing 25,
000 will bo erected in the near futuro to accommodate the
growth of this training school. The public school building,
which is an imposing structure, is sufficiently large for a
town much larger than tlwpresent one and is a monument
to the good judgment and- forethought of tho liberal men
who wore instrumental in its erection.
