Kllen Stewart, of Yarrow Valley, hns lccn a stage-driver for three years or .more, and her route is over twenty miles of very rough and lonesome coun try. Sho has, says tho Kansas City Journal, had adventures, of course, since sho lias been at work, and more or less serious accidents from washed out roads and snow-drifts, but sho has Iccpt right on, driving every day in the year but Sundays, and the business in tho route' has increased considerably since sho has had charge of it. She came very near being frozen to flcath one night last winter, when she vtvas stalled in n snowdrift and found it Impossible to dig her way out, but some farmers rescued her, and in a few tlays sho was on tho box again. Miss Stewart has also had some trouble from tramps. One night in the tpring one of them attempted to hold up tho stage. It was a bright moon light night and Ellen was late. In a lonely part of the road where heavy .forests Hanked it on cither side a man suddenly stepped from behind a tree and, catching tho horses by the bits, stopped them. "Throw out that mail bag!" com manded the fellow, gruflly. .Miss Stewart always carried a revol ver in a convenient pocket, and in tho wink of a cat's eye she had the muzzle of it squarely on the tramp's head. "Get up on that rear horse!" was the reply that the highwayman got to his order. The man didn't move. "Get up there or I'll shoot you," coolly said tho girl. The tramp came to the con clusion that he had better obey orders and scrambled onto the back of the horse. ' "Now, sit still till we get to tho j)ost ofllcc or you'll be sorry," said the girl, who kept tho man under cover of tiio revolver. In throe-quartors of an hour Miss Stewart drove up to the post office with tho prisoner and called fot some ono to como out and take tho fcl low in charge. Mr. Saunders, of Lehi, came up to Mesa this morning on business. Mr. 0. T. Ilavdon, Tempo's veteran pioneer, paid Mesa a pleasant visit yes terday. Moote & Bchuje have begun picking and drying their C0-acre field of muscat grapes. They have some twenty pick ers. Mr. John Sampson, a mining man of Denver, went up to look over the mines at Goldfleld with Judge Woy yester day. Mr. Sampson will stay there but a day now, and will rettirn after visit ing California. Mr. Leonards, of Phoenix, came up to Meea this morning and will go up to the mines with Kimboll's afternoon stage. Lee Dunn Drummer is canvassing Mesa for the benefit of Fisher candy firm of San Francisco. Elli .Lionel and Brig Johnson started for tht'oldfieldB in tho Superstition mountains yesterday. They will do some work on some claims they havo there and proapect for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Burton will leave Los Aneeles the 25th for Moea. They came that far on their journey from Salt Lake City last week, were delighted with the city and stopped a few days to recuperate and will arrive at Mesa Saturday morning. Foster & Cuber have closed out their business and have sold their building and transferred their lease to Mr. Bailey of tho People's drue store, Phce nix, who will move his stock of drugs up and start in business there. The machinery for Hall's twenty stamp mill is being rapidly transferred to the Mammoth mine and put in posi tion there. Some eight or ten four and six-horse teams loaded with the ma chinery paesed through Mesa en route for the camp and they report still more coming. Mr. D. F. Rappelye came in to Mesa yesterday from tho well he ii digging between here and Goldfield, for water and provisions. The well is now down about eeventy-five feet and they exnecf to get water soon. When tney gel water in the well and establish a half way house it will make tho road very convenient for travel. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, Miss Bell Shonick, Mr. and Mrs. Tuters, Miss Graham and Andrew Laucer spent a few days in recreation up in the Super stition district latt week. They camped at Willow Springs nnd enjoyed themselves exceedingly under the cool black willows, and in the balmy invig orating mountain breezes. Mr. Laucer reports the killing of one of the largest rattlers ever heard of in the territory. The snake was of a yellow variety and was seventy-nine feet long nnd had ninety-seen rattles on.
