Silver bars, $4d,c,-2 Mexican dollars, 50&51. The sugar truBt has framed its tariff bili. Now let's see if it can pass it. Texas is practically bankrupt. It does not pay to have a Hogg for gov ernor. Millionaire- Plllmas's employes strike, bjt the occupants of the upper berths meekly submit. Congress would render itself more pipular if it would follow the presi dent's example and eo fiBhing. The kihst i38ue of the Oasis from Benson is at hand. The Oasis is a splendid newspaper' and deserves a liberal eupport. The ciUESTiON of whether high tariff raises wages is no question at all. Any body with a modicum of common sense knows it does. Brazil, the land of the crocodile and "de monk" has severed diplomatic re lations with Portugal. Some of these hot days this erratic South American republic will be pushed off the earth. Popular sympathy for Miss Pollard will be somewhat dampened by the re port that she is going to write a novel baaed upon her rattier highly flavored career. Miss Pollard Ehonld hasten to deny the story in most emphatic terms. An ExcnANGE remarks that Bismarck would rather have a sure cure for rheu matism than all the titles in Europe. Of course he would. By judicious ad vertising of his remedy he could make enough money to buy such titles as pleased him, and could cure his own rheumatism at the eame time. Grave doubt exists in the minds of many intelligent people as to the guilt of Mrs. Maybrick, who is undergoing a life sentence in Woking prison for the murder of her husband ; but all appeals to have her case reopened have met with stern denial by the authorities. This action appears to us to be exceed ingly inhuman ; and if there ia any way of bringing the case up in parliament and securing fair play for the unfortu nate prisoner, it should be done. COMPROMISE ON SUGAR. We are told, with some evidences of enthusiasm, by the advocates of the amended Wilson bill that the sugar producers of Louisiana in conference assembled have consented to accept the senate schedules. How about the sugar consumers? To admit free of duty all goods which climatic reasons prohibit America from producing insufficient amount to satisfy her own needs is one of the first prin ciples of the protectionist. Therefore the McKinley bill took the duty off sugar. There wasn't a household in the land that did not profit by this act ion. But, in order that the nation should not be entirely without sugar in rase war should cat off ontside com merce, the McKinley bill provided that a portion of the millions contributed by European producers of manufactured goods as a license fee for the privilege of doing business in our markets should be paid out as a bounty to domestic pro ducers of sugar. This was logical and right, and generous to a section from which the framers of the McKinley bill could hope for no partisan advantage. Now the Democracy proposes to in crease the price of sugiir to every Amer ican family in order to be able to re duce duties on goodB that we can pro duce abundantly, and so enable all European exporters of woolen goods and cotton eoods and iron goods to in crease their wholesale price to the amount of the reduction in duties. Of course, the sugar producers are satis fied. It makes no difference to them whether their fellow Americans or foreigners furnieh the cash that goes into their pockets. The producers of sugar number less than 1,000 persons. Only 796 were represented in the conference. The sugar consumers number over 60,000, 000, and they will do the bulb of the voting next November!
