CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS
A telegram received last night
by the chairman of the Re
publican Territorial Central com
mittee from Hon. L. H. Goodrich,
who is now in Washington, announces
formally the candidacy of that gentle
man for the Republican nomination aa
delegate to congress.
Dr. Goodrich is temporarily east
in the interest of Btatehood, but
will shortly return home and proa -ecute
his candidacy with that vigor
and vim which are characteristic of all
his undertakings.
He is a sterling Republican, a sound
and reliable business man, having by
his own efforts earned a handsome for
tune, and ia a man, who, if nominated,
will lead the Republicans of the terri
tory to certain victory.
His high character as a citizen is one
that cannot be aesaMed and will make
him a most formidable opponent.
Maricopa county has heretofore been
modest in the presentation of candi
dates for congress, but she now pre
sents the name of a gentleman who is
the firBt to openly announce himself as
a candidate, and who if nominated will
make a campaign that can only end in
success. It is with this assurance and
guarantee that Republicans of this
county will offer to the convention the
name of Hon. L. H. Goodrich, who as a
Republican defeated the strongest Demo
crat in the strongest Democratic county
in the territory, as the standard
bearer of the grand and glorious old
party in the approaching political con
test. As a newspaper, The Republican is
for the nominee whoever he may be,
but it is time tnat the party began se
lecting its timber and this announce
ment in these columns at this time is
for the purpose of placing in the hands
of Republicans for consideration the
name of a man who is willing to made
the race and who would be a certain
winner.
SILVER GAINING GROUND.
Congressman Reed is not the only
representative Republican in the east
who has profited by the first of Presi
dent Cleveland's object lessons. There
are others who have opened their eyes
to the necessity of restoring silver to its
rightful place in the currency of the
country. It will not much longer be
possible for the gold niononietallists to
hold even the creditor New England
states under their thumb.
Mr. Reed is credited with . the ambi
tion to be the Republican candidate for
president in 1896. Thether or not it
be true, he has had the good sense to
extend big information as to the in
fluence of silver demonetization upon
the prosperity of the country. He has,
by the action of Grover Cleveland, been
furnished with an opportunity to ob
serve the baleful results of a full sur
render to the gold interests of Europe
He has the manlinesB to confess that
he has made what is to him a discovery.
He will no longer be counted as a sup
porter of the gold idealists.
The remedy which he suggests for
the existing condition of things will be
criticised. It cannot be expected that
it will find favor in the eyes of his po
litical enemies. The problem of re
storation will have its advocates of all
sorts, each with his own peculiar opin
ions', but the first necessity is that the
ranks of the gold worshipers be broken.
Silver was cast out for the sake of in
creasing the purchasing power of the
yellow metal. The enemies of silver in
congress were the tools of the gold in
terest. Congressman Reed has with
drawn from the combination, and in
that fact, coupled with the plain indi
cations from other sources, we find en
couragement for the future of the Re-
publiean party on this most vital sub
ject. Within a twelvemonth there will
be a stampede across the line to get on
silver ground.
The announcement of the murder of
R. E. L. Robinson seems to be accepted
with some doubt, which doubt the
friends of that gentleman (and they are
many) hope may be well founded. " The
well known tendency of Robinson to
romancing leads many to suspect the
authenticity of the present tragic story.
Let us hope that it is only another of
his "fakes."
A story cornea from Kentucky about
youne woman who threw a Btone and
killed a steer, and another young wo
man who threw a stone and broke a
horse's leg. Assuming that the one
who hit the steer was throwing at the
horse, and vice versa, the story is not
itogetner improbable.
