Mexican dollars, 51G851J4- A tax on sugar is essentially an in come tax on the poor, The $4,000-a' vear limit levies the income tax ex cluBively on rich, or at least, well-to-do men. But sugar is a necessary article of daily consumption on every family's table. One cent a pound more for every pound of it used is a tax that will fall directly and sharply on every workingman's income. The laboring people and their children will pay this income tax which a Democratic "tariff reform" congress has voted to levy remorselessly on every household for the benefit of the sugar trust. When the McKinley act was passed in July, 1890, one of the first object lessons as to its effect was that the little sack of sugar weighing thirteen pounds, which cost $1 in 1870, was increased in weight to twenty pounds for the same money. When the Gorman act is passed one of its first object lessons will be that the $1 dollar bag of sugar will shrink from twenty pounds to fifteen pounds. It's no use denying that life was sweeter in many ways under Republican than it is under Democratic rule. Among the scientific problems to which Professor Alexander Graham Bell, who will spend the summer in Nova Scotia, will devote the season is the transmission of light by electricity that is, he will try to harness elec tricity to light as it has been harnessed to sound, so that people may be able to see a great distance, just as the tele graph enables them to . write and the telephone enables them to speak at a great distance. Prof. Bell firmly be lieves that it will be possible some day to see from Washington to New York as easily as one can convey the sound of the voice that distance. The vibra tions of light are much more rapid than the vibrations of sound, but Prof. Bell is confident that he will soon be able to discover a diaphragm sufficiently large to receive the vibra tions of light and produce the effect necessary to convey the impression to the human vision. Hawaii, having failed of annexation to the United States, is going to annex the United States to itself, and has be- gun by annexing Jiieckar Island, a small rock in the Pacific, which is said to have been recognized at some previous period as belonging to thia country However, we are not likely to quarrel with Hawaii over this. The point of the matter is that Great Britain is said to have selected Neckar Island as a landing place for the proposed Pacific cable, and if there is to be any dispute about ownership it will be a triangular one. Tije elle as to docking congres sional salaries doesn't seem to have been very rigidly enforced in the case of Mr. Breckinridge of Kentucky. He was absent for weeks defending in court hia disgraceful conduct, and has since been absent a good deal of the time carrying on a campaign in his dis trict, bat he has drawn bis full pay just the same as if he had been attend ing to the business for which he was elected. Corn doctors are springing up all over owing to the increase in diseases of the feet growing out of narrow toed and ill-fitting shoes. There in a protest among some of the most fashionable women against the torturing razor-toed shoes, and they have formed a sort ot broad-soled and square-toed league and frown upon a pointed toe whenever they see one. People who are afraid of noise had better move out on the desert. We wish there was so much din and rattle and bustle on our streets that one coald not hear himself think, so to speak. It is that kind of activity that makes cities. ' As we have before remarked, the Council represents the people as a whole. A very large majority want the franchise granted for which Col. Masten asks. It is the duty of the Council to pass the ordinance without unnecessary delay. When confederate soldiers stand up and announce that henceforth they in tend to vote the Republican ticket, Arizona Democracy may well begin to inquire where it is at. Mayor Hopkins of Chicago, has is sued a proclamation calling upon the citizens for aid for the women and children rendered destitute by the Pull man strike. Some Alabama boys went fishing Sunday and carried a demijohn of "bait." They're in their coffins now. The jug contained aconite. If the uses of adversitv are sweet this country ought to be able to get along without much sugar while Demo cratic rule lasts. The business men of Phoenix are anxious for railway connection with Mesa. Will the Council ignore their wishes? Denver will imprison as vagrants all men who reach that city to join the commonweal movement. Tke Mexicans have adopted another United States ism and are organizing bands of white caps. The campaign in the Seventh Ken tucky district appears to be nearing the 44-caliber stage. Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powdei World's Fair Highest Medal and Diploma.
