REPUBLICAN COUNTY CONVEN
TION. By authority of the Republican county cen
tral committee a Republican county convention
is hereDy called to meet at the city of Phcenix,
Arizona, at 10 o'clock a. m., on Saturday, Sep
tember 4, 18S4, with powers, as follows:
To nominate a regular Republican county
ticket for the coming November election.
To elect delegates to the Territorial Republi
can convention.
To elect a Republican county central com
mittee. To take cognizance of such further matters
as may properly come before such convention.
For the purpose !of electing delegates to the
county convention primary elections will be
held in the different precincts between th
hours of 11:30 o'clock a. m, and 5 p. m on
Thursday, August 2, 1894.
The test of the right to vote at such primary
election shall be an affirmative answer to the
question: "Will you support the Republican
ticket at the coming election?"
The apportionment of delegates for the
county convention is as follows:

The official call for the Republican
county convention appears at the hsad
of this column this morning.
Col. B. J. Franklin seems to be in
the lead for the Democratic nomination
for district attorney. But the nomina
tion is not equivalent to an election
this year.
Times must indeed be serious when a
thoughtful paper like the Minneapolis
Tribune says in all soberness: "There
are some things that are worse than a
Democratic congress."
Sam Jones has been telling Alabam
ians that "a fair count may mean negro
domination, but a corrupt ballot means,
the devil's domination." And Sam is
right. With a fair ballot in the south
the Democratic party would never get
into power.
YOUNG REPUBLICANS.
The young men who are organizing
throughout the country Republican
clubs are the bone and sinew of the
party which they represent.
They are earnest and honest Repub
licans, and they are ready and willing
to fight the party's battles at the polls.
The resolutions adopted by most of
them show that the young Republicans
have no desire to repudiate the princi
ples which have made Republicanism
synonymous with national prosperity
and good government.
The record of the Republican party
is commended with the same vigor
that Democratic incapacity as it is now
being exhibited at Washington is con
demned. They have declared in
favor of protection to American labor
and American capital, and denounced
the vicious proposed tariff legislation
now pending in congress. The young
Republicans are also in favor of a free
ballot and a fair count, and earnestly
in favor of liberal pensions for the old
soldiers and sailors and their widows
and orphans and for the tree coinage of
silver.
The members of the Republican
clubs are fighters in the cause of Re
publicanism. The party is in a prosperous con
dition and there ought to be large ac
cessions to its membership between
now and tae election of 1396, when
every fighting Republican Bhould be in
line.
We suggeBt that a young men's Re
publican club be organized in Phoenix.
The prospective early admission of
Arizona has already brought several
aspirants for United States judge to the
surface. If Cleveland appoints the
judge he will of course be a Democrat.
Let us hope that he will be an honest
man. A corrupt judge who will hold of
fice during life would indeed be a sad
blow to the new state. The people, there
fore, irrespective of party, have a deep
interest in the matter and will want to
see a sound lawyer, a fair man, and
more than all a man above suspieion
appointed.
Governor Tillman of South Carolina,
has pledged himself, if he goes to the
United States senate, to make it pleas
ant for Grover Cleveland. "If I go
there," he has publicly said, "I will
use a pitchfork in his old fat ribs."
Tillman is a scallawag and no sort of
man to send to the senate, but a man
who will agitate the ribs of Mr. Cleve
land with a pitchfork or a fish "gig" is
badly needed in Washington.
Col. W. S. White of the South side,
is mentioned as a candidate on the Re
publican ticket for the legislature.
Col. White is not seeking the place but
is willing to serve the party if so de
sired. An acquaintance of many years
with Col. White leads the writer to add
that no better man can be found for the
place. He is a gentleman of high char
acter, fine ability and would fill the
office in a most acceptable manner.
Moses Harris, a negro of Delta,
Miss., was bitten by a dog supposed to
be mad, and not wishing to take any
chances in the development of hydro
phobia the neighbors gathered around
Moses, mercifully knocked him on the
head with a club, and buried him.
We presume that the dog will be saved
if possible.
Hon. L. H. Goodrich is the only Re
publican who has announced openly
his candidacy for congress. He should
be nominated by acclamation and will
be elected by a large majority. He is
the strongest man the Republicans can
possibly place at the head of their
ticket.
The Populist governors are opposed
to the government taking a band to
subdue anarchy and revolution ; but if
there ever comes a time when the gov
ernment remains passive under such
conditions, God help the country.
A French physician announces that
a man can live without lungs. There
are men living in this country without
either heart or bowels, and any num
ber of them are getting along without
brains.
