THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN: SATURDAY MORNING, AUGUST 1, 1896.
3 UNPROTECTED GAME. Suggestion for Sportsmen Who Want to Shoot Near Cities. . A good many shooters are puzzled to know how they can get practice for bird-shooting- near the cities during close seasons without paying for prac tice at the traps. There are several kinds of birds which fly in such a manner as to require skill in the killing, and are not protected by Jaw at any time. Of course, a small- gauge gun is best for such practice, as it takes more skill to kill with it than with a big gun, and the more skill re quired the better the practice. The kingfisher is a rapidly-darting flyer, rather shy and hard to kill. Wit li ii 28-gauge gun a. shooter's ' abilities "would be well tested. The English sparrow, if put Up badly scared, will give considerable sport, and the man who can get three with two .shots out of a small flying flock may regard himself as a good shot. Of course, a man wouldn't aim at the center of the flock, and pull. He aims at par ticular birds, and, if he misses the ones . aimed at, he calls the shot amiss. Eed winged and crow blackbirds fly rap idly, when their nests are not near by. They are not protected, and may be iound in partlv wooded pastures. Some sportsmen may object to this as being useless slaughter, and it would Tie if the birds were thrown away. He would dress them all, except the king fishers, which taste fishy, and the pot pie they make would be followed by another before long. The English spar rows make a fine stew, as the flesh is al ways hard and sweet. HEADLESS BIRD. Young Quail - Whose Neck Bad Been W run Fllen Away. . A gentleman living near this place Tccently netted a dozen quails, says a Taylor dispatch to the Philadelphia Times. When he was kiling and dress ing them the following strange occur rence transpired: As he went to wring the neck of one of the birds the head slipped off in his hand, pulling about two inches of skin and feathers along with it. - Turning a moment later to pick U the bird from where he had thrown it, the gentleman found the little fellow 'lying and hopping about as though nothing untoward had happened, his bare neck sticking up gaunt and head less. Thinking the bird's activity resulted from a posthurnus contraction of the .muscles the gentleman attempted to pick him up, wheD the little fellow anounted in the air and flew away, flut "tering and quivering now and then, but when about 200 yards from the house Tie disappeared into a small pine thicket, flying to the last. Chloroform Manufacture. Pure chloroform is now successfully prepared by electrolytic method. A constant current is passed through a salt solution in an enameled vessel by means of lead electrodes. This liber ates chlorine, which reacts on a stream of acetone diffused into the vessel, and the chloroform produced is thus col lected by distillation. KILROY'S NEW PALESTINE. Send Ten Two Cent Stamps for Fifty Paee PamDhlet. To Men Who Are Today Blindly Walk ing Over Golden Opportunities in Phoenix; to 300 Lady and Gentle men Public School Teachers in Arizona Representing Thirty Odd States of Our Union and Canada; to Hundreds of Commercial Trav elers Visiting Phoenix as Well as to Every Sensible Mechanic and His Prudent Wife, Now Paying House Rent, $35,000 in Values Free (Inside City Property). There Is only one way that Is safe for ny man or any number of men, in medium circumstances, by which they can maintain their present position, if It be a good one, or raise themselves above it if It be a bad one, in any com munity, much less one with the oppor tunities of Phoenix, viz: By the prac tice of industry, frugality and prompt action In securing city property. The ye and ear of three-fourths of the wealthy of the United States are watching Phoeaix and Its untold wealth. Arizona stand 3 with out an equal on this continent In the plen'itude of rich resources; Her coal lands, aggregating 40,000 square miles; her timber carefully estimated, over ten thousand million feet, not to speak of her mineral, fruit, cattle and agri cultural lands, ber climate surpassing that of Egypt In such a section there is no surer road by which young men and ladies especially, can raise them selves from a position In which they feel to be incompatible nd unsatisfac tory a3 regards their mental and phys ical conditions, than by commencing at once to make payments on a lot in this phenomenal city while the present opportunity lasts (mark our words; it never will bs repeated in Phoenix). It particularly applies to hundreds of commercial travelers coming and going monthly: to over three hundred public school teachers in Arzizona (represent ing some thirty different states in the Union, as well as Canada). To hund reds of our brave old miners now re quiring a home and rest in the city of which they laid the foundation years ago Phoenix. To every man, old and young, not a capitalist already, that Is today investing in local loan and build ing associations which on their face and by virtue of their plans must prove Inadequate for the very purpose for which their good thinking promoters Don't Trust to Luck- Use TflE REPUBLICAN i Always f,nNewS j In Advertising First ' I In Circulation iiiifHiiiiNftifiifittmmmmmittntiifiiriffHfNtHfHtHfiitHf Allf m Til llf Hi llf HI ITi III Mf 1"' ill ? founded them In this, that from limit ed resources such institutions must produce very limited results and, when considered with the wants or a met ropolitan city like Phoenix, most un satisfactory in the end. This emer gency or necessity, however, will be amply supplied our city in the near future by corporations of unlimited means when the modern house worth from $2,000 upward will be sold to the energetic citizen on a very small cash payment down and one hundred and twenty months In which to pay bal ance. More than that, the monthly payment (interest included will not be over $12) with a further clause in the contract that should the purchaser di after the first year's pay ment thereon, his family will receive a deed for the same (a clean cut deed). We submit with charity to all, but with a firm sense of duty toward every young man in our city that he at once buy a cheap lot or several if he can, and do so while time and opportunity lasts which will not be long. Kilroy's New Palestine agency is the only factor, yes public benefactor, that can offer you Inside property at one-third its value and will continue to do so for the month of June, July and August if not sold out sooner. That it speaks in pro phetic language and at the right time is appreciated already Dy many per sons whose aim in life is the taking advantage of phenomenal opportuni ties in this city. Head his ad carefully in another column and in the other dailies of Phoenix. It suggests that you do not idly put it off, but make up your mind and take advantage thereof today, either by calling or writing him. You will never regret it, but lay the foundation of your hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, within a year or two, remembering always that "we are lacking in true courage when for fear of the future we persist in taking the crusts and scraps and wholly rely on the niggardly salaries of the present. We should not be satisfied with a sal ary alone. We should not mortgage the possibilities of our future, more particularly after having the opportu nities so apparent as are those in Phoenix today, called to our attention. No! We should, while opportunity Is ours, have the courage to take life as it comes feast or famine. The read ers of this article and their friends throughout the United States and Can ada can remit to our credit $100 to the Phoenix National bank, with an addi tional $2.50 registry fee, when the bank will return them a warranty deed and abstract of title. Should they so de sire the property can be taken care of by our agency. Parties, and we invite every deserving person while the lots remain, living throughout Arizona that desire to purchase on the installment plan can remit as above one-third of the lot purchase, when we will place in the bank a warranty deed In escrow which will be returned when balance of purchase money is paid. The low est priced lots now offered is $100. In making this offer, Kilroy's New Pal estine agency is giving to its patrons at least an aggregate sum of $35,000 in values, viz: $150 on each lot so sold.
