THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN: SUNDAY MORNING, SEPEEMBER 13, 1896.
3 HARD TUSSLE vIVr. -,UIN. Oregon Hunter Attacks a I;oar with an Ordinary Jackknife. J. C. Hearing:, who was hunting- and trapping in the Blue mountains, a few miles west of Elgin, met with a little ad venture with a bear recently that might have proved rather serious to him had it not been for the intervention of one of his dogs, says the Portland Oregonian. He was engaged in setting tras, and as he had considerable weight to carry he had no weapon with him except a Jack- knife, and on his rounds his dogs die covered the winter quarters of a bear in a big hollow tree. The bear was at home, and was pretty much alive, as sub sequent events proved . As bear pelts are quite valuable, Jake was quite anxious f o secure this one, but was afraid that if he went to camp, a mile and a half dis tant, bruin would escape, so he lasted his pocketknife to the end of a stick and attempted tocutthe animal's throat. He only succeeded in inflicting some pain ful flesh wounds, which so enraged the brute that it suddenly came out of its hole, and was almost on him when one of his dogs made a sudden onslaught, on the animal's rear, which diverted his attention long enough to enable Jake to dodge behind a tree, and the dogs soon made it so tropical for the bear that it was glad to take ref uge in a tree, where they kept it until a gun was procured from camp, when the animal was quickly dispatched. AN HONORABLE VEGETABLE. The Onion Has It, Admirers The Ana conda (Mont.) Onion Society. The nutritious and wholesome onion occasionally finds its vindicators. At the thriving Montana oity of Anaconda there is a dining club called the Ana conda Onion society. Its first feast was recently jriven with distinguished suc cess. Down the center of the hall, says the Anaconda Standard, was set a long table, with covei for all the guests. A t each plate was a large and juicy onion; in the middle of the table was an array of meats, bread, fruit-crackers, cheese and other things. At one end of the hall floated the standard of the club in proud conspic uousness. It consisted of a pole sur mounted by a string- of the vegetables from which the socity takes its name. On the wall hung this motto, beautifully wrought: IS OSION THERE IS STRENGTH. Each member wore a pretty bouton nier of little onions. The occasion was greatly enjoyed by all the participants, and the society hopes to do much to re store the onion to the honor and esteem of the world. In Montana, as well as on the whole of the Pacific slope, the onion attains a delieiousness of quality which is com paratively unknown on the. eastern side of the continent. If the people of the east could have onions as good as those of Montana and California, it is possible that the Anaconda Onion society might find imitators in the east. There is only one way that is safe for any man or any number of men, in medium circumstances, by which they can maintain their present position, if it be a good one, or raise themselves above it if it be a bad one, in any com munity, much less one with the oppor tunities of Phoenix, viz: By the prac tice of industry, frugality and prompt action in securing city property. The eye and ear of three-fourths of the wealthy of the Lnned states ais warenmg Phoenix ana i'.s an told wealth. Arizona stands with out an squi on Uwa continent in the plen itude of rich resources. Her coal lands, aggregating 40,000 square miles; her timber carefully estimated, over ten thousand million feet, not to speak of h-r mineral, irun, cattle and agri cultural lands, her climate surpassing that of Egypt. In such a section there Is no surer road by which young men and ladies especially, can raise them selves from a position in which they feel to be incompatible wd unsatisfac tory aa regards their mental and phys ical conditions., than by commencing at once to make payments on a lot in this phenomenal city while the present opportunity lasts (mark our words; it never will he repeated in Phoenix). It particularly applies to hundreds of commercial travelers coming and going monthly; to over three hundred public school teachers in Arzizona (represent ing some thirty different states in the Union, as well as Canada). To hund reds of our brave old miners now re quiring a home and rest in the city of which they laid the foundation years ago Phoenix. To every man, old and young, not a capitalist already, that is today investing in local loan and build ing associations which on their face and by virtue of their plans must prove inadequate for the very purpose tor which their good thinking promoters founded them in this, that from limit ed resources such institutions must produce very limited results and, when considered with the wants of a met ropolitan city like Phoenix, most un satisfactory in the end. This emer gency or necessity, however, will be amply supplied our city in the near future by corporations of unlimited means when the modern house worth from $2,000 upward will be sold to the energetic citizen on a very small cash payment down and one hundred and twenty months in which to pay bal ance. More than that, the monthly payment (interest Included will not be over $12) with a further clause in the contract tbat should the purchaser die after the first year's pay ment thereon, his family will receive) a deed for the same (a clean cut deed). We submit with charity to all, but with a firm sense of duty toward every young man in our city that he at once buy a cheap lot or several il he can, and do so while time and opportunity lasts which will not be long. Kilroy's New Palestine agency is the only factor, yes public benefactor, that can offer you inside property at one-third its value and will continue to do so for the month of June, July and August if not sold out sooner. That it speaks in pro phetic language and at the right time is appreciated already by many per sons whose aim in life is the taking advantage of phenomenal opportuni ties in this city. Read his ad carefully in another column and in the other dailies of Phoenix. It suggests that you do not idly put it off, but make up your mind and take advantage thereof today, either by calling or wnting him. You will never regret it, but lay the foundation of your hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, within a year or two, remembering always that "we are lacking in true courage when for fear of the future we persist in taking the crusts and scraps and wholly rely on the niggardly salaries of the present. We should not be satisfied with a sal ary alone. We should not mortgage the possibilities of our future, more ? H W The Republican their to they be so ! We should, while opportunity is ours, have the courage to take life as it comes feast or famine. The read ers of this article and their friends throughout the United States and Can ada can remit to our credit $100 to the Phoenix National bank, with an addi tional $2.50 registry fee, when the bank will return them a warranty deed and abstract .of title. Should they so de sire the property can be taken care of by our agency. Parties, and we invite every deserving person while the lots remain, living throughout Arizona that desire to purchase on the installment plan can remit as above one-third of the lot purchase, when we will place in the bank a warranty deed in escrow which will be returned when balance of purchase money is paid. The low est priced lots now offered is $100. In making this offer, Kilroy's New Pal estine agency is giving to its patrons at least an aggregate sum of $35,000 in values, viz: $150 on each lot so sold.
