Joseph Kvung. was brought down from AVIckenburg the night be fore. The testimony of the defendant, which wns coiroborated by the Investi gation of the arresting officer and others, was to the effect 'that Uvans had accumulated a wild, wlerd and picturesque Jag on WIckenburg whisky and had lain down by the water tank to sleep. Hut he was too drunk to sleep, and in his fancy he saw a party of girls who weie trying to do him Injury, and he did his best to pro tect himself against them. Then, too, he saw little birds In the trees that looked llko vultures to him and what time he wns not engaged In fighting the girls he was throwing rocks at the savage blackbirds and meadow larks that were about to eat him up. Then he secured a coupling-pin and golns to Mrs. Mowry's boarding house he told her he was going to protect him self against theso dangerous girls. If he had to kill them. Hy the time he reached I'hoenlx he was sober and as clear as a bell. H thanked the ofllcers for their trouble, as he raid he wanted to come to I'hoe nlx any way, and had saved his car fare. He was discharged. The case of Illchard Lazarus, was gonn over. Hen Steffen. HI Hooker and Dr. Purmun testifying and Dr. Dame ron examining. He wns committed to the asylum. Later he wns given a con 'fldentlal talk by the Judge In which he was told that there was no Intention of persecuting him, b'lt he ecemed to be off on the subject of whistling, and ns long ns he was at large no one was safe In his presence. He seems to be perfectly sane In respect to everything else, but has the distressing mania that he wants to kill people that whistle. A course of treatment at the asylum may make him ail light again. In Tues day morning's Issue mention was made of house bill No. 170 and house bill No. 171, for the establishing and malntr. nance of a bureau of nrchaeology and ethnology. Several t the members who have criticised the bills do not seem to understand fully their pur pose. The fact Is that nearly every state and territory except Arizona, has taken steps to protect whatever may bo found therein of historical or archaeological value. Tho purpose of these bills Is not to stand In the way ot legitimate exploration or uncovering of ruins or natural curiosities, but to pro tect the tame by laws that will pr vent relic hunters, tourists and non residents from coming Into the terri tory and digging up and currying away everything of Interest that may be found here. (Those who arc urging the 1111 ue more imvlous than any one else to have these things explored, but they desire to see It done under restrictions that will Insure some benefits to the territory and the people In It rather thnn the lining of eastern curio cab- .lne'ts and eastern po'c)telb6ok"s to tho Impoverishment of Arizona.
