Early In the session of tho unlament- ed Twenty-llrst-leglslature thw Honor - able President of the council, Mr. Eugene DISMAL FAILURE, Ives of Yuma, secured the appointment of a committee composed of himself, Senator Clnypool of alia, and Senator Warner of Cochise, to Investi gate the official acts of the territorial auditor. Startling developments wers promised. It was confidently asserted that the auditor had been guilty of every sln and. crime known of man. Such yellow Journals as thb Enterprise and Yuma Sun took up the hue and cry and published, In glowing headlines tho auditor's awful downfall, and pre dieted all sorts of summary 'punlnh ' nient. Little 'by little the. true mo tives -were dlscHsed, Advances were made to the governor, who was the real objet of attack, the auditor bolng us'd merely as1 a seapegolit., Tho governor, metaphorically speaking, was taken up xohto a -high mountain and told that the earth, and the heavens above the earth, and the waters under the earth, and surcease of troubles, the calling off of Ives' sleuths, and other blessings too numerous to .mention, would be his forever and. a day, provided he, the governor, would fall down and wor ship his majesty, the president of the council, and sc manipulate matters jthat Ives could down .Frank Cox and secure control, of. the Southern I?aclflc Influence In this section. It Is reported that tho governor was sorely tempted and would probably have yielded, but for the great difficulty ho experienced Jn striving t: surround such common Clay as the- president of tho council with angelic halos or saintly attributes. At about this stage of the game Is where the people became interested, because the territorial treasury was vailed Into requisition to defray the cost of personal rage. An enemy of the governor's was employed at u sal ary of J1Q per day to expert the books of the auditor. This expert and Mr. Ives retired to an inner room and danced a hornpipe In very glee af the opportunity given them to "even old 'scores." ,., But, alas! forfdnd hopes and sweet 'dreams, of. revenge, utter, searching the fccoks of thc auditor from Alpha to, "Omega they could glean naught but disappointment. "I'll go for $200 and go. tonight." he said. "We'll Just take you." The response came from several sides. Immediately each of the group declared his willing ness to contribute sufficient to make up the amount required and the $200 was L raised at once. v Sibley seemed to be delighted to bo able t'o back up his assertion.
