The dispute between t'wo rival Amer ican corporations over thj possession of an asphalt 'lake In Venezuela has caus ed especial Jnteiest In whtt nn asphalt lake U like and how apphatt U mined and ship ped to market. Aspnait, or asphnltum, Is the sol.M form of blltumen. Bitumen Is a generic term which Is applied to a variety of substances, lnnglng'from natural gas, naphtha, p:tr:Icum and mlnem tar to asphalt. The asphalts of different locaHlties vary greatly In composition, ns Is" shown bv their ohem. ical reactions. Nearly all are amor phous and have the general appearance of pitch, melting at about the temper ature of boiling wuter. Asphalt, tt is r-thought Uy scientists, has resulted from the hardening of the maltha, and pe troleum elements, through oxygenation and eaporatlon. One of the most Interesting asphalt beds In the world is the pitch lake in the state of Bermudez, VcnezuiCa. Tts.it valuable dep!t wns unknown to American capitalist until 188S, -when an Amtrlian engineer, Ambrose How ard Carner. icvclved a title to the pro pel ty frorn the Venezuelan gci eminent. Thl he sow to tln Now York and Ber mtidez company, which Is closely allied to the so-called uspha'it trutt, of which Gen. I- V. Orcene Is piesldent. The Bev el at tKiunrQ miles which are Included In the concession obtained have In tho last thirteen years been steadily Improved. The company hns cleared the maturln river to navigation, so that deep sea craft from all quarters of the globe can run in from the Cnrrlbean sea, past the Ilrltlsh possessions of Tilnldad island and Inland to the docki of the com The tow n of uuanoco Is (he river ter- pany at Ouano-o. minus of the Bermudez company's rail road. Here ore hundreds of native Ven ezuelans, working under the eye of an American superintendent. The- law as phalt Is brought from the 'lake, five miles distant, en flat cars, and shoveled into tlie holds of the vessels. At Oua n'oco this operation a much simpler than at Trlnldnd, where lighters nrp necessary because of the long, shelving beach of tho hnrbor. The railroad fol lows an old Indian trail which led from the- tlvcrV the shores of the pitch lake. The surface of the lake is to hard that for some distance from the thorn It sUp. porta tho weight of a loaded train. As one looks over the surface of this great deposit he nt first cjcs nothjwr cf a striking or -unusual nature. He views only black plane, resembling anthra cite coal, or Hint, upon which are groups of natives working with picks and shovels. Clofeer examination, how ever, shows that portions of the sur face are soft like tar, where the asphalt Is sticky and bubbling. Asphalt' Is dis tinguishable from anthracite not only by Its form, but because It Is soluble In bUulphltic of caibon and benzole. These pitch pools resemble some what the hot springs of the Yellowstone re gion. They slowly cool and become hardened after many yenis. As at Trinidad', th?y vary In depth. Some of them have never been fully Bounded, and nre thought by the nu tles to extend Into tho ban els of the earth. The asphalt which Is mined at Ber muda Is more tr less haidened and is obtained with some dlfliculty, as It re tains the sun's heat to i trying de gree. iIOip Bermudez company, after years of experiment, has succeeded In putting on the market asphalt which wl'.l neith er crncl: from co-Id nor melt under the burning- sun. About a dcoade ago ve hicles wcro likely lo cut into asphalt pavements In tho summer months. By chprnfcal treatment t'hl has been obvi ated In all the newer ravements, even In hot countries, w'here It fully teslsts the oun's heat, and nt the same tlm retains J'3 durability and elasticity. Arphalt Is used largely in the man ufacture of cements. It is mixed with u petroleum residue to render It p'.is tlc. and Is then tempered with one fvcnth Its weight of sand. It also forms one of the most durable water proof materials 'known. For rnoilnt; purposes It Is mixed while hot with fine gravel, or is absorbed by thick roll of felt paper. Asnhriluls found In many countries. In Vera- Cruz. Mexico, near the village of Molcasan, Is n mountain largely composed of asphalt. The dapolts nt Seytsel. "I would have- placed, to to speik. one foot on the past and the other on the future, because the music of the fu ture cauies me no alarm. I would have yald to young-disciples, practice the art of fugue constantly, stubbornly, until your hand Is sufficiently strong and free to bend the notes to your will. Ad dress yourself to composition with confidence; see ty it that your part writing is good, that your modulations nro free from affectation. Study Pal catrlna and some o-f his contempora ries, then pass on to Marcello; and pay special -attention to recitative. Go and hear a few performances of modern works, but do not be dazzled by the number of haimonlc and Instrumental effects, n:r by the chord of the dimin ished seventh, a danger, also the ref-J vgf; of' those, -who cannot without Its nid compose; four consecutive bars of nilislc.
