AN INDIAN MAIL THIEF
A Careless Postmaster Furnished the
Incentive.
Deputy United States Marshal J. P.
Welles came In from the north yester
day -morning with a Navajo Indian,
charged with robbing the United States
malls. Under tho circumstances, as
will be hereinafter shown, the crime
was forced upon him by the careless
ness of a postmaster. The Indian was
carrying the mall out of Tuba City.
Ho wna not the regular carrier and,
1n fact. It does not appear that there
was a regular carrier, but the mall
bag'wnn Intrusted with whoever hap
pened to be going In the direction the
mall was to be sent. On this occasion
the Indian was In charge of the bag.
The lock had been Improperly se
cured and fell off. The Indian hnd
heard a metallic Jingling In the bag.
and he embraced this opportunity to
find out what made It. He sorted the
mall on the desert and found a large
envelope with big red letters and great
blotches of red sealing wax on It. He
opened It and discovered In It $21 In
silver and seven $10 bills. He put the
bills Into hla pocket, took U..r0 of the
sllve- and wrapping up the rest of the
silver In a newspaper he threw It Into
the bag along with the rest of the
mall. He then locked It more securely
than the postmaster had done and pro
ceeded on his Journey, having thrown
the big envelope with the red letters
on It away.
The postmaster at the other end of
the line was surprised to find tho
package of silver. There was an ac
companying card of advice In the bag.
showing that a registered letter had
been pent. He sent the package back
to Tuba City. Suspicion was naturally
directed against the Indian, but as th;
bag was found locked on its arrival at
Its destination, and the postmaster at
Tuba City wai willing to swear that
It was locked when It pasped out of his
hands. It was difficult to see how tho
Indian had connected himself with the
shortage of S71.C0.
The postmaster at Tuba City ban a
way, which Is not generally followed
by postmasters, of keeping a record of
the numbers of nil bills he transmits
by registered mall. It was soon learned
that an Indian was disseminating $10
bills at a camp some distance from
Tuba City. The Indian was the mall
carrier and the hllh having been gath
ered up, were found to have the num-

was arrested and he told the rest of
the story.

Organized to Develop a Promising
Near-by Property.
The articles of Ineorpointlon of the
Gold Coin Mining company were tiled
vjtli the county recorder late yester
day afternoon. The "capital stock of the
company Is $500,000. and It Is a strictly
local corporation organized for the
purpose of developing a mine, and not
for Idle speculation. The Incorporators
are C. S. Hoover, W. W. Harnett,
Thomas Barnum and C. W. Harnett,
and the directors chosen at a meeting
of the stockholders held yesterday, are
C. P Jone3 of Tempc. Hugh II. Price
of Phoenix. W. W. Harnett of Mesa
City, C. W. Harnett of Phoenix and C.
S. Hoover, who has for some time had
personal charge or the property pro

The property which the Uold Coin
company expects to work Is situated
about eight miles west of Kyiene, and
fourteen .miles south of Phoenix, on
the southern slope of the Salt Ulver
mountains, aometlmes called Maricopa
mountains. This property has been
worked Intermittently for the last
eighteen ycau-i by C. W. Harnett and
others, who have a'ways had great
faith In the mineral Indications of that
locality.
The company has si claims and
there are others located along the
same big dyke. There has been con
siderable development work done,
enough to satisfy the owners that all
they lack Is further development to
demonstrate that these mountains, like
