Mr. Delos liiown, n wealthy lcsldont of Pent lit. III., and half the time a resi dent of I'eoila in the Salt Klver vallej-, returned heie last Fiidij'. On .Monduj night he gave an elaborate dinner tc several well-known I'eorl.ins af Illinois among whom was Mr. V. C Foster cleikof thedistrict couit. Another guest was Dr. Wallace Martin, who lives at Peoria five months In the year nnd dis tributes the other seven months among San Antonio, Texas, the Salt Klver vallej- and southern California. Dr. Mar tin Is i It'll enough to live whrever he pleases on eartli and good enough to live In heaven, but as he cannot go to heaven without dying, he conies to Phoenix frequentlj-. After the dinner Mr., Foster Invited the othr Peorlans to the Maileopa club. He had a surpilse In store f r t'nem. He wanted to show them same billiard playing. They all used to play scrub games of billiards fn Peoila. None of them had any skill to boast of. Mr. Foster was going to show h a the climate of Arizona promoted, amor.;: other things, expertness In bil liard plajing. lie had bten playing a greet deal for a couple of yeais nnd had reached a point of painful Inde Islon m to whether he should remain among the amateurs or join the professionals. Dr. Mai tin never was much of a bll lUid player, but timing his residence In San Antonio- he fell In with a lot of sporting gentlemen In III health and who had nothing to do but play bll ll.it ils. Dr. Mat tin had stood around day after day and night after night w. itching them do things wlth'itlu balls and cue that he would hav5 sworn couldn't be done. Their wonderful per formances b'came s famlllanto lilro that he could see how they weie done and bel!eed he could do them himself, but he never ttl'd It until Mr. Foster bulldozed him into a game on Monday tiig'ht. Mr. Foster took the first cue, made thiee buttons, left things in a discour aging situation and wl down with a smile of Mdf-satlsfartlon. Dr. Martin took uit a cue and tried to recall the conduit of his San Antonio friends under similar circumstances. He made a shot whose lesult lojked like an acci dent. It straightened out the en tanglement which Mr. Foster 'hud In geniously in ranged. Mr. Foster wi.s suiprlsed at the utait the dottor had made. Hut the longer the doctor played, the more he remembered San Antinlo. He made plajs that Involved the send ing of the cue ball around the table four or five times nnd kept It up until he won the game by a terrific lead. He confessed afterwaul that he was near'y astmuch surprised as Mr. Foster that anything came of the Impossible shots which Ives, Schnefer or Slosson would have hesitated at. He said he merely saw the cue nnd the balls, then shut his eyes, thought of San .Antonio nnd played to Saint Anthonj". The unex pected successful "click" almost made Jilui faint and gave .Mr. Foster's ejes n. more commanding le of his cheeks until ho could see the point of his chin. The moinl of this Htoiy Is that bil liard playing Is not all In practice, but much In seeing and remembering how experts do It. o TONIGHT'S RECITAL Theie aie still a few good seats left for the Hamllton-Stiobrldge-U.iines recital, at the Don Is theater, tills evening. There seems to be a universal de mand among lepublicnns for the nom ination of Mr. Walter Talbot for ninyor. Dcmociats, of course, an; not falling over themsfeh'es to urge his nomination, for thej' appieclate that It means the election of n i .publican mayor, nnd thej" naturally hope to find someone In 'th-lr tanks Mat they can recommend for the place. Still, one of the bsst known demo fiats In the city said to a Republican reporter yesteidny: "IJelng a demo crat, of course I do not want to be quoted, but Mr. Talbot has alwaj's been my Ideal candidate for mayor of this city. This, of course, Is saying nothing disparaging of the others, but he Is the man I wou'd like to see In that place. A number of icpublicans were spoken tJ on the subJiJt. It Is unnecessarj- to give names for tho reason that Mr. irnlboti has never been known ns a politician and Is one man that wquld cpmmand a solid party vote If nom inated, ns well qs the vote of many othns. who knw no party' In city elec tions. Justlce'Oray was asked what he thought of Mr. Talbot as a candidate for .maj-or. He replied: "Mr. Talboi does not want It." "You are eadlng, thp question," an d the lepoiter. "You weie nut asked who wanted the olllce." "Well," said Mi. Oi.ij, "I have been tiylng Id eo.ix. him 'to run fot a munt'i, that's how miii'li I think of him." And bo It was with all who wero ap proached on the subject. Thej- peenied to think the question of Mr. Talbot's capability was not open for dlcusslon, as that Is one of the things that Is tacitly understood by everybody, mid an nttempt to Intel view a republican on the subject was alwaj"s answer "I by the quel j-, "Will he accept It?" o Mlofl Powell, manicuring, halrdre Ing, chiropody and facial treatment.
