HORNER PHOENIX, ARIZONA, APRIL 25, 1001. The attempt of one of the democratic organs In thp city to throw- dust In the eyes of the people, nnd WELL by bombastic nssertlon TO REMEM- try to make them be BER. lleve that the republi cans nre ifpposeil to mu nicipal ownership, and favor retaining girls In saloons, Mould be ludicrous If It were not so silly and unfair. There can be no issue as to municipal ownership of public utilities If nny faith can be reposed In ths promises of ihe democratic party, which Is doubt ful. Both parties have declared In favor of public ovnersblp. There U no question a to how republicans stand. Their word a more than sounding bras and tinkling cymbals. They have stated their position on this question In their platform In no unmeaning phrase. On that platform our candi dates stand. The republican platform declares not only agalnit the presence of singing girls In Knloons, bub goes farther nnd Insl-ts upon the enforcement of the law as to minora In raloonp. The democrats are now striving to curry favor with the ultra-moral ele ment of the city by claiming that their party forced the slnglng-glrl Issue by adopting prphlbltory resolution first. The truth r.hauld be know.i and remem bered about this transaction. When the democrats were In conven tion assembled, the slnte prepared by the Young Men's Democratic club was forced to the front . Jue Alexander and his cohorts, who had been Inglorlously defeated at the prlmarlss. were there for blood. When the committee on platform reported there was not a word in It against saloon singing not ft word. There was not a word In It about the protection of minors not a solitary syllable. About all It did con iatn was a luscious sop thrown out to the fire department for the purpose of catching votes. Following their usual custom themi tried to straddle. TJiey were used to that sort of thing. They can straddle a moral question, though it possess as many points as a barb wire fence as easily as they can a bi cycle. It's second nature to the crit ters. But Joe was warm under the collar. He was there for blood and nitant to get It, He offered the resolution against saloon singing. Was It wel comed with exclamations of great Joy? Hardly. Ita adoption was fought tooth and toe-nail. It was necessary for th redoubtable Joe. to mr.k? several elo quent spells, accompanied by dire and meaning threats, before the angry op ponents of the resolution could be whip ped Into line. They were beaten at last but It Is well for the good citizens of this city to remember that said reso lution was adopted only after a mighty struggle, and then only through fear of defeat by reason of Joe's defection. This resolution Is not tho willing off aprtar ixf the democratic party of the cltjj, Utt a vagrant and a hobo, father ed gentleman who Is the father ctfnfMr of the party In this city. Evidently Mr. Bryan thinks the peo pie re blooming Idiots or he would not Ify to palm off such rot on theny us h ! doing. Any man who has got sense enough to pound sand in u rat hole and, has watched the rapid Improvement of con ditions among the 'laboring people In the last four years ,knovs that such a statement Is a fabricated production cut from the frazzled edge of political despair. .Sugar Is one of the few groat com modities In the production of which the United States Is weak ARIZONA and dependent. In al TO THE most all the great ncc- RESCUE. essarles of life food, clothing, fuel and shel terthe country Is more than self-supporting, but In the matter of sugar wc are largely dependent on foreign coun tries. And our sugar bill Is the largest by far of any of our foreign necounts twice that of coffei which stands next in pronvlnenre, and much greater than that for India rubber, tea, silk or hemp. Every year we pay about J 100,000,000, or about $1,35 for very man, woman nnd tblld In the country, to foreign coun tries for sugtu. Indeed, out of more than 2.000,000 tons of sugar which the United States consumes annually, we produce aaltry 1.70,000 tons, mostly from the cane fields of Louisiana. This does not Include the production ofthc new Island possessions, Potto Rico, Ha. wall and the Philippines, but there would add only 4CO.00O to our pioduc tlon, still leaving us to obtain much more than half our sugar from the for eigner. And all this In the face of the fact that so good an authority as Sec retary Wilson, of the department of ag rlculture says : "We have no more need to Import su gar than to import wheat." Phoenix' opportunity is knocking ut her door. She modestly waits to be In vited In. She will not bide long, nelth' r will she clamor for admission. If we take her In The Republican believes such prosperity as was never dreamed of will be. ours. There is not water enough to Irrigate the valley If plant ed to alfalfa, but every acre could be producing wheat with the present sup ply. Sugar beets could be raised, It Is es timated, with one-fourth the water, und would be four times ob valuable. They would be grown In the fall, win ter and spring, when the water Is most abundant nnd the weather most pleas ant for out-door work. The refuse from the beet would make excel lent cattle food. Here Is a proposition worth thoughtful consideration. Every farmer In the valley knows that ulmoit nny roo croil does well here, but especially Is A OOLDKN this true of beets. It OPI'OKTU- has been proven by nc NITY. tuul tests that the sugar beet develops a paying percentage of sugar not as high n per cent as In some localities, but above the average, and enough to pay big re turns. It has been proven, also, that tho conditions here soil and climate render the production, of two croips per year n certainty: Owing to these facts, not theories, we see no reason why a fiugar factory would not pay enor mously. Then v. hat' Is to hinder or de lay Its construction? "We can raise the beets and more of theim to the aero thnn almost any other locality under the sun: they are rich enough In pacch nrlne to make them wry profitable nnd capital Is seeking, more eagerly than for years, profitable Investments. It we, as citizens of the valley, fall to nvnll ourselves of UiU combination of favorable circumstances to secure a factory we ought to be. banlched to tho Dry Tortugns. -Tho Philippines are r.ot generally supposed to corneal manj delightful summer resorts, yet they promise to be popular In this rewp.'ct this summer, as about twenty membeis of congress will sail for Manila In June. It may be that the chief reason for such popularity ran be found In the fact thnt the United States government will furnish HOW TO GAIN FLESH Persons have been known to jjain a pound a clay by taking an ounce of Scott's emulsion, It is strange, but it ofteri happens. Somehow the ounce pro duces tl0 pound; it seems to start the digestive machinery going properly, so that the patient is able to digest and absorb his ordinary food, which he could not do before, and that is the way the gain is made. A certain amount of flesh is necessary for health; if you have not got it you can get it by taking Scott's Emulsion, You will find it just as use ful in summer as in winter, and if you are thriving upon it don't stop because the weather is warm.
