Major Burke said: ' am often asked If the Indian's makeup for the show Is his own. In deed It Is. No pale face could ever de vise such curious, quaint and slBnltl cant arrangements of paint nnd cork. They, of course, are beaten back ,and are the unpopular Vines, but they enjoy It. In this they differ from the Mexicans, who took the part of Spaniards In the charge on San Juan hill. Of course, he Is actuated by sen timent no loftier than that of snip ping from the columns of the other papeis Just what will prove most at tractive and advantageous in hi own, but nevertheless he lias been the means of building up some very bright Amer ican literary reputations. For years Mr, DoQley's philosophy was enjoyed by the limited constituency of a Chi cago evening paper. Dooley's creator could hardly be said to have had even a local fame until the exchange editors of the country began c'lpplng his col umns from day to day, and Dooley emerged as a great national censor and t..ulrMv It was the came way with George Ade's "Fables In Slang." Frank L. Stanton's "Dixie Verses" enjoyed celebrity for years In the columns' of the Atlantic Constitution befoie he was raised by the exchange desk shears to his present conspicuous position. A writer who la speedily becoming widely known In this manner Is Mr. Philander Chase Johnson, who for the past ten years has been wilting dally a quarter of u column of miscellaneous verss and humor for the Washington Evening Star under the title "Shooting Stars." There ore In American Jour nalism few features so welcome to the industrious exchange editor as this col umn. In the willing of which Mr. Jonn son has Introduced several humorous fictitious characters. Of these the best known Is Uncle Eben. an old darkey, whose philosophy Is a part of the' edu cation and apiusemenl of all Wash ington. Several ytars ago a number of this character's observations were collected In a little volume, entitled "Sayings of Uncle Eben." Mr. Johnson,- who Is a native of Wheeling, W. What (uttering frequently result from a mother's ignorance. : or mono frequently from a mother's neglect to properly Instruct her daughter I Tradition says "woman must suf fer," and young women are so taught. T liero ia a little truth and a great deal of exaggeration in this. If a young woman suffers severely she needs treatment, nnd her mother should see that filio gets it. Many mothers hesitate, to take 'Vlr daughters to a physician for cvnir na tion s but no mother need lif0t:.tu to w'rito freely about her di( iiwr or herself to Mrs. Pinkh; 1 1 and secure the most efficient in. vice without charge. Mrs. Pinkhum's address la Lynn, Mass. ' Mrs. August Pfalzgraf, of South flyrpn. Wis., mother of the young lady whose portrait wG here publish, wrote Mrs Pinkharo In January, 18W, saying her daughter had suffered for two years with Irregular menstruation had headache all thu time, and pain in her side, feet swell, and was generally miserable. Mrs. Pinkham promptly replied with advice, and under date of March. 1899, the mother writes again that Lydia B. Pinkhara's Vegetable Compound cured her daughter of all puiuit and Irregularity. Nothing in the world equals Mrs. I'inklwin'h great medicine for regu lating woman's peculiar monthly troubles.
