AUIZONA, AUGUST C, 1901 Don't leave the city for mountain or beach without having The He publican accompany you. You will be lonesome without it. Suicide Is often supposed to exist ns it hereditary tendency, because not In frequently the child of SUIC1DH a parent who has died AND by self slaughter has SUGGESTION, followed the parental example. Vet us It Is doubtful whether even a mot bid or melancholy turn of mind may rea'ly be Inherited. It Is extremely unlikely that so definite and specific a pet version of nature as the tendency to suicide van be transmitted from father to son. Several recent cases recorded ore of a character to establish the theory that the .sulclds of a on. ror Instance, following the suicide of a father Is purely the result of suggestion or ex ample. In New Jersey, a mother com mitted suicide on 'the anniversary of the hiy on which her son had died ns the result of a pistol shot presumably discharged with suicidal Intent. A casuist might claim that If the son ically committed suicide, he might have Inherited from the mother the tendency which In the mother herself was not developed until after the Kon's death. Hut another case, lit which a husband took his life on the anniversary of his wife's suicide, in dicates that the power of example has much more to do in such a case than that of Inheritance. In still another case, and on the same day, a woman committed suicide by jumping from a icllff In a spot where, many years be fore, 'her husband had died by acci dent. It would be quite Impossible to deny the melancholy effect of examples of this sort. The human TOrnd brooda deeply on the self-lulllcited death of a relative or dear friend, until the rea son Is affected, the iKIse of the. mind destroyed. The suicide's son, even If he 1n too young to know, at the time, of his father's manner of death, Inevitably hears the story at last. If concealment Is practiced, and a hush falls ut the mention of the father's name, the son learns the truth In time with all the more eagerness. The sad example works upon his Intelligence. He Is veiy likely to see and fed the sorrowful The weak spot. If 'you arc sitting in a restaurant where waitresses are in attendance, you will note now anil again some young woman pul her hand to her back, and straighten herself tip, while her lips are tightened as if by pain. It's backache. Yet all nay long sue must b' on her feet, lifting, carrying, hurrying. That -weak spot, the back, can be made strong by the use of Doctor Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It cures the womnnly discuses which cause headache, backache, side ache, nervousness and sleeplessness. It. makes weak women strong and sick women well. " Favorite Pre scription " contains 110 alcohol, and is absolutely free from opium, co caine mid all other narcotics. "I wrote you for advice February 4th, is)," write .Mr. Loma lUlitend, or Clarcmorc, Chtrol.ee Nat., luj. Ty. "1 was racking with pain from the back of my head down to my heels. Dr, I'ierce'a Medical Adviser in paper covers, is sent frte on receipt of 21 one cent stamps to pay expense of mailing vii ty. Address Dr. R. V. Tierce, Buf falo, N. Y. UNlQN(fcyLABEL Mm side of life, and if true sorrows and misfortune oppress him, 'the picture of the open door out of trouble, which the father found arises again ond again. The man or woman who 1h tempted to suicide .should remember that the con sequences of such nn net do not end with the net Itself. They may be far reaching and most deplorable. Genet nl 'Wood's review of the Cuban outlook, published In another column, Is eminently gratifying, TIIH the more so as he has NEW boen uniformly con- CUBA. servatlve In his survey of conditions there, and Is disposed to Judge the future by whnt has been actually accomplished. His view of the new electoral law passed by the constitutional convention Is re assuring, for the law sccurca American supervision of the elections, and that. It Is Impossible to deny, Is an Indis pensable safeguard for starting the machinery of the new republic under the proper auspices. Cuba would most certainly suffer a relapse and go wrong If there was not a good friend near her to help In those elections. This Is the typical cause of revolution In moat of the Latln Ameiican communities. As to the re formed municipal gqVernments and the reformed Judiciary, too much can hardly bo said In commendation of General Wood for the direct share he has had In those changes, and to him also Is due part of the credit for plac ing the school system on n firm basis. With an island free from yellow fever and only waiting for stable politics to assume its Industry, he may look back with much satisfaction on his work, and may safely anticipate-the comple tion or whnt has been so well done thus far. History will be Bearchod In vain for a more signal service to civiliza tion than has been performed under his guidance. The Alabama constitutional conven tion has complicated its dllTlrultlcs by adopting the grand TI1H father clause, permlt- GR'AND- ting all descendants of FATHER'S soldiers In any war to CLAUSE. register nnd become life electors nt any time prior to January 1, 1903. This Is mani festly to allow all the poor whites to vote. Irrespective of any other disqual ification than crime, and to soften the resentment of those who do not wish the negro to vote after 1303, even If he meets the educational nnd property tests required of him. It goes to show that the nrofesulons of Impartiality for the negro, which were loud In favor of the remnant who might be able to prove themselves politically fit after the great majority had been put out of politics, were not altogether sincere, but are controlled In the lost resort, as might have been expected, by the un compromising assertion of complete white ascendancy. Comment Is heard that the clause is unconstitutional, nnd has given rise to dissension In the con vention which may be organized Into permanent opposition afterward. More than that, the vengeance of a repub lican congress Is expected: but after the atademic measures of punishment which congress has thus far devised, It Is safe to say that nothing will be exacted from Alabama for her trans gression. Mrs. Carrie Nation's martyrdom, fol lowing her attempt 'to reform Kansas with a hatchet, now has the lame and lmiotent conclusion of her acceptance of 11 pardon and the opportunlty-klndly given her by the courts to pay her lines on the Installment plan, at the rate of $5 a month. Though Mis. Nation has declined prodigiously as an object of Intel est, she will probably be able to write enough stories for the papers to enable her to lay by J5 a month over and above her modest living expenses; and as she evinces no present disposi tion to stai t up with the hatchet again, the double-column head nnd the police court will probably know her no more. This curious episode In American his tory, It Is to be hoped, 1b ovtr. The clock whose bilious face looks down from the postofflce- tower has probably been .relieved of ome of Its conceit. During the period of Its sus pended animation the people of Wash ington went to bed, got up, ate their meals, went to work on time and caught suburban trains. The drouth In the west has stimu lated the ambition of a number of men to llgure as "corn kings." The oppor tunity is at hand, they think, to corner the grain maiket as never before. They will probably find thnt It Is a far cry from the drquth to a fortune. Eight bundled and ninety-three per sons died during 1900 In the Punjab from snake bite, and Dr. Charles D. Dana of the Cornell "medical college, says hard drinkers cannot lust long. Life Insurance rates In the Punjab must be high. Judging from comment In the New York newspapers, those bandits who hold up trains In the far west ought to make a dash for Manhattan Island Instead of the Bad Lands or the Hole-ln-the-Wo.il country. "We Will soon hear that Londoners nre studying the American language In order to. Improve their pi enunciation of English. Wonder 1f anybody 'took the kaiser's temperatuie when he heard that Co lombian soldiers had walked on his ling. DO YOU WANT A HOME ? What say you to thW proposition? We will give the first applicant a six room house on a well shaded lot 70X137V-S for $1000. This may be paid for $100 cash, nnd practically your own time on the bal ance. Interest on $00 balance to be paid In monthly Instalments of $3.60. Each six months $50 or more may be paid on the principal and the Interest reduced. Every $50 paid reduces the Interest 35 cents per month. Is ret this better than paying rent? Call on ft. H. BREENE A man was hanged In public In Ar kansas the other day, and among the spectntors was a 10-year-old boy, who proceeded to imitate the proceedings. His life Is now In the balance and the governor of the state will recommend the repeal of the public execution law. It should not requlie such a tragedy to persuade the state authorities that outdoor hangings are unwholesome spectacles. Tha sixth article of the code of In structions drawn up for the guidance of the new Chinese foreign olllco con tains this admonition: "Forget self for the public." They have- midsummer humorists In China. The news f 10m China Is that the re form programme calls for the substitu tion of the tsung-li-yamen by the wel-wu-pu. This news Is received with In tense interest and satisfaction. Uncle Sam has $.",00,000,000 In gold In his 'tieasury enough to give several of us a farm without any Oklahoma lottery. It Is hoped that the stilke will not have to be settled as many times as the Chinese question. It Is more dilllcult 'to purify the gov ernment of Chicago tlun to clean Its streets. Spain will manage to stiuggle along without a naval boar of Inquiry. General Wood, here's hoping you go back to Cuba as hearty as a buck! Senator McLaurin's democracy would fit better In Ohio. NOTHING IS NEW. An advertisement Ih&t Is not original Is not necesratlly an Imitation. Ori ginality Is a myth. A man who says he Is original must say it very quietly If he does not want the statement dis puted. If he proclaims It to the world, hundreds of other men will bob up and prove that he Is not. There Is piobably not an advertise ment appearing In the magazines today that can be called strictly original. Every onehnjt been suggested by some one else. Not necessarily by some other ad, but by soirVjthlng gained from some other source than the writer's bialn. It Is not necessary to be what the world calls original to be successful. If a man Is going to dig nut all his Ideas from the time he Is born and not rely to some extent upon the Ideas of others, he will be dead before he la able to talk. It sometimes happens that two men on opposite sides of the continent sim ultaneously produce an advertisement the central thought of which Is exact ly the same. Wheitupjn the advertise ment publications seize upon both, re produce thCiri In deadly paiallel nnd clamor loudly for the man who stole from the other to stand before his brothers and confess. The truth Is th.it neither copied from the other, but both drew their Inspira tion from the snnu source. Originality In advertising is only 01 1 glnal In the association of Ideas, and he who can do that cleverly Is ns near nn oilglunj being us nn advertisement maker needs to get. Here Is another aggravated case of uneedalsm. It events as If the National Dlsqult company did the public nn Irre parable wrong when It popularized this compressed-word idea. It takes hold of every iminn who In groping around for happy nume for his product and hangs on like a burr. It Is more con tagious than a rag-time melody, and follows Its worthy namesake through the length and breadth of the land ns faithfully us the- Constitution does the Hag. The Victor O. Mlll.j Hook nnd Eye company tells us in this advertisement, "U-Pln-It. that's all." From this we Infer that you do not s-w It. or button It, or null It, jor rivet It; ymi Just pin it and live happily vir afterwards. From what the writer knows of womankind, he does not believe that a hook and eye which Is applied to a gar. nient by means of a pin will make milch of a hit with the opposite sex. Of course. If it Is true, ns the advertise ment Insist.", that when yoy pin It "that's all," this contrivance' may be a succehs, but us a mlt when a woman puts her faith In a pin thut Isn't all. The advertisement of the Standard OH company Is well displayed. More space would not have Improved It. It shows nt a glance a practical use of their Paraftlne Wax. This style of dis play Is closely 1 elated to the kind' that works I11 the original package, al though In many Instances It Is better, aa it ruggsta motion ratlur than in animate objects. i The I'.Tfrrovement 'In th- ndvertlselng of schools, colleges and seminaries has been marked of late. Up to within a Vtrj' short time, fome'of the best Insti tutions In our country have been con lent to take about two Inches In the hading magazines, and use this space to tell the pub'.Ic In small type the name of er school, where It, "was lothed. whether It was for boys or girls, and how a booklet which they had pre pared for distribution told the rest.
