' The common council of Tempe held b meeting Tuesday night, and - the Ordinance relating to the issuance of the water works bonds was read and discussed. It was referred to the ordl . nance committee, and will be brought up for final action at the next meet ing of the council. Mr. C. A. Saylor, a .prominent south tide rancher, left "Wednesday night for u visit to his former home in lorrell. Kan. He expects to be gone!;about three "weeks. J. S. Birchett. Sr.. Is critically ill at Ms home near Tempe. Some time ago one eye became affected, and the in- llnmmation spread until one side of lils face became paralyzed. Me was forced to resign his position as super intendent of the Tempe canal, and, al though he recovered slightly at one time, the affection has progressed xteadily until now a .fatal termination Is feared. Mr. Birchett is an old resi lient and is -one of the most popular men on the south side, and his serious Illness will cause a feeling of regret in every home in Tempe. for everybody knows and loves "I'ncle Joe" Birchett. The band boys' benefit entertainment last Wednesday night was a great success, and quite a number of people availed themselves of the opportunity to hear Tempe"s local talent perform.' The musical features. of the programme were excellent, and drew continuous rounds of applause -and repeated en cores. The "Ravings of Mi-Cu Hough." was delivered by B. J.- Stehllk In a manner that drew thunders of ap plause. The entertainment was a cred it to the band and the performers throughout. Rev. M. B. Bird and Henry Schmidt left Wednesday night for Phoenix, and yesterday morning they took the S. F-. P. & P. train for the east. . Mr. Bird goes Immediately to Pennsylvania, and Mr. Schmidt to Iowa. After visiting friends and relatives for a time, they will meet and will travel together. Rev. Mr. Bird will deliver lectures assisted by Mr. Schmidt In the musical part of the programme. Rev. Bird is a cor netist of reputation, and Mr. Schmidt developed his talent until he too Is an excellent performer. They will be ab sent for an Indefinite length of time, but Intend to come to the Pacific coast next year,-If it is possible to do -so. Their departure is to be deeply re gretted. Rev. Bird has been in Tempe a little over a year, and in that time has made many friends. To his efforts the success of the Tempe Merchants' band Is largely due, ne having been their director for some time. The po sition he has vacated will be hard to fill. Rev. Giroux will fin the pulpit he has left vacant for a time, at least, and probably a call for a year will be issued to Rev. Giroux. Mr. Schmidt has grown up in Tempe and is . well known and liked by everybody. He has displayed considerable musical talent, and under Mr. Bird's tuition has de veloped Into an excellent cornetlst. For some time past he has been a rural mail carrier, which- position will now be filled by Webb Griffin. Mr. Putnam has returned from Preseott and is the guest of R. G. Finch. ' L. L. Plank delivered the Normal cadets' new uniforms, and they are certainly very pretty. MESA of the Tempe normal school, Saturday, October 26, 1901. A varied programme is announced of a musical and literary character, with a few games and odd features mixed -In. The programme will be an Interesting one and quite n number of Mesa people will probably attend. The Tempe brass band will fur nlsh music for the occasion. -Mr. lxmle Mel. representing the-Aetna Insurant Co., was a visitor In Mesa today, looking after the Interests of his firm. Chare L. Purdy of Phoenix was a business visitor 'in Mesa today. Mr. Purdy has lieen In the nuisery busines-4 at Alhambra until recently, having sold out this summer, lie will engage in the real estate business in Phoenix In the near future. Floating clouds threaten anotner rain today and me farmers are eagerly awaiting its arrival. - Mr. L. I'uber met with quite a severe accident, Tuesday. He -was riding a Wheel and collided with Bert Brooks while going at a very rapid rate on West Main street. He was' thrown to the ground, lighting on his head. When picked up he was unconscious and tw hours "elapsed before he1 came to his right mind. "-He is fueling much better today, but Is very, sore from his shak ing up. -, v . Mrs. Helen Crlrmon and her son Fred returned from Soda Springs, Idaho, Friday last. Fred engaged in the shee-j business there four years ago and now has an independent little herd of 1500 head. He is Just down here on a visit for a few months. Mis. Crlsmon sper-t the summer in Utah and Idaho and had a very nice vlslt- M. J. T, Vance, one of Mesa's most progressive farmers, is putting up a Page fence around his farm.
