A HARD LUCK STORT.
Earl Harrison of the electric ' light
plant has a hard luck hunting story he
is telling nowadays. Last week, while
he was out In the woods, after a hard
day's hunt, he lay down beside his
camp fire to rest. Quletljr he dropped
off to sleep and was dreaming of large
buck deer, etc., when his dreams were
suddenly broken by a vivid realization
that something wan burning. He
awoke none too Boon, for his bed had
caught from the fire and was almost
consumed: tm legs of Jils trousers were
almost burned off and upon putting his
hands in his pockets he was compelled
to withdraw them very quickly as he
had been carrying a number of smoke
lens powder cartridges in them and
they were hot enough to burn the hand.
He soon got rid of them, however, and
upon taking an Inventory also discov
ered that the stock of his rltle had been
burned off. He proudly boasts, though,
that even in that crippled condition he
killed the buck of which he was dream
ing. Williams News.
CHARLES H. ANDERSON.
Instantly Killed Last Friday by an Ex
plosion of Dynamite.
A sad accident occurred eight miles
west of here last Friday, resulting in
the death of a young man in the em
ploy of the Santa Fe Pacific by the
name of Charles H. Anderson.
It appears that Anderson, who was
a stranger In this section, had been
working at that point for two or three
days before the explosion in the capac
ity of powder man. It le the duty of a
powder man to keep the material in
readiness for Instant use in blasting,
and as the weather has been rather cool
recently it was neeessary to warm the
explosive before using. Anderson, to
facilitate matters, it seems, had placed
a large piece of sheet Iron over the fire.
Whether he dropped a stick of dyna
mite on the Iron, or from what cauBe,
will never be known, but suddenly there
was an explosion, resulting In the in
stant death of the unfortunate, man.
The deceased has a mother and sister
living at Newcastle. Colo., to whom
the sad news was telegraphed. He
was a promising young man and had
been a volunteer 1n the war with
Spain, serving in Cuba throughout the
campaign. His remains were Interred
at the scene of the accident last Sat
urday under the, direction of Under
taker J. S. Button. Williams News.
MRS. CLARA. KINNEY,
Well Known as Owner of the Kinney
House. Disposes of the Property.
. Last week Mrs. Clara Kinney trans
ferred to Miss Alice Dean for a con
sideration of $10,000 cash lots 8 and !
in block 85. fronting on Mesqtiite and
fine. streets, comprising the Klnney
hotel property. i J.
Mrs. Kinney disposed of the .property
with a good deal of reluctance, as It
has been her home and especial prld,
for very many years, and she naturally
feels as though she had parted from an
old and dear friend. She bought the
ground when she came to Globe in 180.
At that time it presented no attractive
features, being bare and cut by a deep
gully, but through her own persistant
efforts Mrs. Kinney gradually Improve l
the premises by erecting ' substantial
buildings and beautifying the ground"
with shrubbery and shade trees until it
is now one of the most desirable pieces
of property In Globe and continues to
be the leading hotel.
Mrs. Kinney has retained the new
brick building on Menqulte street, op
posite the hotel, for a home and will
now take a well earned rest, although
her mines and other Interests will oc
cupy a portion of her time.
A TEXAS BURGLAR.
A telegram was received late Thurs
day night by Judge S. K. William
from the sheriff of El Paso county thai
he hod sent a deputy after T. J. Bent
ley, who has been connined in the jail
here for nearly three weeks. During
most of this time Bentley has been
shackled and his lot has been a very
uncomfortable one while in durance
vile. All necessary requisition papers
have been secured and approved by
Governor Murphy anil the officers will
arrive today and convey Bentley back
to EM Paso, where he will be tried for
burglary. Bisbee Review.
MOSQUITOES AND COLORS.
Nu UaU's experiments Indicate that
the mosquito Is attracted by some col
ors and repelled by others. The experi
ments were conducted in a large gauze
tent, one end of which was formed by
large windows into which the sunlight
poured on bright days. Large stone
basins were placed on the floor for the
anopheles to breed in. At the beginning
it was noticed that when a person en
tered the tent clad in dark gray clothes

the mosquitoes Bottled .on the dark
cloth, but that they never dul this when
the" person entering was clad In white
flannels. A number of boxes lined with
cloth of various colors were placed In
rows on the floor and it was noticed
that the mosquitoes would enter the
box lined with dark blue la great num
bers and. In less numbers, would enter
boxes lined with other colors. In the
following order: dark red. brown, scar
let, black, slate gray, olive green, violet.
leaf green, blue, pe-irl gray, pale green,
light blue, ochre, white and orange. No
mosquitoes were found in the box lined
with yellow. As practical applications
of these experiments It Is to be noted
that the khaki uniform should offer ad
vantages in addition to being Invisible
to the human enemy. The number of
insects congregating In dwellings might
very well be lessened by the choice of
suitable colors applied to the waifs. A
trap might be ma le, lined with dark
blue. In which the Insects would con
gregate, so that they could be readily
destroyed In large numbers.
Have your mosquito bars yellow. The
favorite blue seems to be also the mos
quito favorite. British Medical Jour
nal. .

SMALL ROOMS IN NEW HOTELS.
Every Inch of Space Utilized in Order
To Meet Expenses.
"The evolution In hotels during the
past few years han been Interesting."
said Mr. Charles Logan, of New York,
who is in town for a few days. "Of
course, the most noticeable features are
the extensive modern Improvements,
such as baths, washstands, telephones,
etc.. In each room and the generally
Improved equipment of the . buildings.
A feature which Is not so noticeable,
but one which Is very Important to the
hotel man. however. Is the decrease in
the size of the roams. Hotel rooms
used to have high ceilings and were
long and broad. Now they are mostly
small, with comparatively low ceilings.
"Sometimes I het.r guests ask each
other why the roonv. are so small now
adays, and they seldom hit on the
right reason. It is because the cost of
erecting and oVe rating a hotel Is much
greater than formeily, while the extent
of the patronage is about the same. It
is necessary to makts the rooms small In
order that the same space may bring'
bigger returns.
"Take one big room which used to
produce, say, $3 a day. and It is now
cut In two, so as to make the same
space produce 16 or 15 a day. Take the
case of your new hotel Just finished
here. The hotel wtlch used to occupy
its site contained almut 150 rooms. The
new one contains 25" rooms, but look at
the difference in the cost of the two
hotels and in the espense of maintain
ing and operating them. A hotel that
used to cost 1200.00) now costs $1,000.
000." Washington Post.
SENSIBLE REMEDY.

you advertise?" sail his friends. Yon-
