Dated at Tempe, Arizona, this fourteenth day of De cember,. 1901. ' . ' ' (Signed) W, H. WILBUR. Cashier. MESA The sliver medal contest of the W. C. T. U. was held before a large and ap preciative audience at the Baptist church Friday night. The programme was one of. the most interesting ever piven and all of the pieces were so well Tendered that the Judges were a -long time In rendering their decision, and for a time It was thought that three of the contestants would have to recite again r.o that the prize could be allotted. But the decision was finally reached, and everybody was satlslled that the Judges did their best to decide on the merits of the speakers. The gathering was called to order by Mrs. Telford id a tevr' appropriate words of explanation r. and welcome. Rev. Mr. Farr of the M. E. church led in the Invocation, the audience stand ings after which,, all sang "America." Mr. Walbrldge of Phoenix made the opening talk In the Interest of, the V. C T. U. and the splendid work they had accomplished. He was followed by Carl Leebrick, who recited "Terrible Charge' in a very creditable manner, and was followed by Vernon Wlllams, who recited "Shadows" In such a worthy manner as to win the medal. Then followed Miss Sallle Wallace, who recited in her usual style "Jack the Fisherman." A vocal solo was then rendered by Rev. F. L. Farr. Then fol lowed a recitation. "Only Sixteen," by Ceorge Allison. and a recita tion. "A Boy's Story." by Nelly Duncan, which excellent parts were followed by a mixed quartette by Mr. Dorman, Mr. Wilbur. Miss Wilbur and Mrs. Dr. J. E, Drane. which was much appreciated. "College Oil Cans" was then recited by Miss Dela Carroll. and "Is it Worth the Sacrillce" by Miss Anna Rogers, both of which were re ceived with evident appreciation. WhllJ Rev. Imrl Zumwalt, Mr. Walbrldge and O. S. Irwin, the Judges, were out. Miss Ethel Wilbur favored the audience with a solo and Miss Kester recited "Jere miah and His Ministerial Pa." Rev. Imrl Zumwalt of Phoenix made the presentation speech of the medal to Master Vernon Williams in a few eloiiuent words, paying --a glowing tribute to the temperance cause and the work of the W. C. T. U. - A. J. Snell wanted to attend a party, but was afraid to do so on account of pains in his stomach, which he feared would grow worse. He says: "I was telling my troubles to a lady friend, who said: 'Chamberlain's Colic. Chol era and Diarrhoea Remedy will put you in ronditlon for the party. I bought a bottle and take pleasure In stating that two doses cured me and enabled me to have a good time at the party." Mr. Snell is a resident of Summer Hill, N. T. H contends that "the stories are usually manufac tured by other persons, with the sole object of making amusing reading. Once. In a while, however, his theory receives a set-back by something In his own experiences, and he confesses that he has come across some genuine humor and some unconscious witti cisms. "One such was brought to his notice recently. A Sunday school examination was in progress, and the examiner put this queftlon: - "What did Moses do ' for a living while he as with Jethro?" Following a long silence, a . little voice piped up from the back of the room: i "Please, sir, he married one of Je thro's daughters." Youth's Compan ion. Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa Stage.
