LESS OF PARTISANSHIP IN CITIES There is a growing and commendable tendenc y among the people of our great to subordinate partisan politics in considering the claims of candidates for munic ipal ojlh es. It is true that in nearly all of our cities both democrats and republicans put out full tickets for city o!lices. but political lines and asso ciations draw fwr lss stringently upon voters In municipal elections than in those that involve party principles and policies, and are rec eiving less and less considera tion as the country grows J older and larger. Senator Mark Hanna, who was saved from the attentions of an an archistic lookiwg visitor by detectives of the Waldorf-Astoria Tuesday even ing, almost fell into the clutches of a second rate bunco steerer yesterday within the doors of the same hostelry. Really, the senator's extreme innocence did not seem to comport with the vast political schemes with the engineering of which he has been credited. It may bo he was deceived so easily because he believed in the saw that lightning does not strike twice in the same place. The man who wanted to see the sen ator Tuesday carried a red card which read: "Giovanni di Carradini, 399 Blue Island avenue, Chicago." He was disheveled in attire and abus ive in manner. He called first at the Imperial hotel, saying he wanted to see K. K. Mynick. the political boss of Cincinnati." who ivonM Intn.rhwn ! hi in to Hunnn T.inn- uinr-tn1 fr.n i,A Imperial, he went to the Waldorf-Astoria. Detective Kennedy quickly hus tled him out, when he went to the West Thirtieth street police station and made a plaint. Senator Hanna awoke in his apart ments at the Waldorf yesterday and learned of the annoyance he had been saved. Walking, down stairs, he met Frederick Smith, house detective, and said genially: '"Good morning. Smith. Much obliged lor the affair last night. But 1 don't understand it. Thought all the an archists were out of the country." "I thought so. too. senator," replied the detective, and after the exchange of a few more words the latter stepped aside. At this moment a well dressed man with an expansive smile stepped up to the republican statesman and seized him by the hand. "My old friend. Senator Marcus A. Hanna," he exclaimed. "Very glad to meet you again." re plied the statesman cordially, "but I dop't place you at this moment." " What ! Don't you remember Cum mings Billy Cummings of Cincinnati, who inherited property in Italy and went there to live'.'" "Yes, yes. I have no doubt. You real ized on the property. I have no doubt." "Exceedingly well, my dear senator. I have just returned to my native land, and I assure you it is a great Joy to meet my boyhood friend whose repute hiis become international." Dn't mention it," said the senator, blushing joyously. "Ah. senator, Billy Cummings has watched your career. He has sub scribed to a news clipping bureau at an expense of many hundreds of dol lars just to keep track of your meteoric course. It has been a joy, an unspeak able joy." "Please don't (latter me so, my dear uinmings," palpitated the rotund statesman. Just then Detective Smith, an old Scotland Yard man. turned and saw what manner of man was conversing with Senator Hanna. Without a word he advanced to the self-styled Mr. Cummings, seized him by the nape of the neck, hurled him through the cor ridor and dismissed him at the Astor court exit with a swift kick. Senator Hanna gazed at the spectacle in pain ful astonishment and several guests were agitated in the belief that another anarchist had been after the states man. "Senator," explained the detective, when he returned, "that's a confidence man I kicked out of here during horse show week. He had the nerve to come around again. He rells tin jewelry." Senator Hanna was constrained to thank the detective once more. New York Telegraph. IT WOULD BE CRUEL. The circumstances surrounding the finding of the body of the dead China man near Fairbank and investigated by Deputy Sheriff McDonald and Coro ner Clark dispels the reported theory of murder. From all accounts the Mon golian came from Mexico, and being illegally In this country iad walked to a Chinese ranch on the river. He was headed for Tucson, where he had a relative, but was taken sick at the ranch of his countrymen and after a week's illness died. The unfortunate Chinaman had been seen and his con dition commented upon. The living Chinese brethren being fearful that they might themselves be deported to China and expelled from the United States for- harboring a countryman that did not have his papers, concluded to bury the deceased pilgrim and not notify the authorities. Accordingly he was buried on the hillside, the dscovery of which was later reported. Tomb stone Prospector. KILLED AT PEARC'E. Telegraphic Information was received by P. H. Warnekros today that Ren F. Smith had killed himself at Pearce last night. No further particulars were had and whether Smith accidentally shot himself or the deed was committed with suicidal intent is not known. The news was quite a shock to his many friends here. B. F. Smith was one of the pioneers of the county and well known in the southwest. He owned a ranch and fruit orchard at Wilgus in the Chiricahua mountains and recently engaged in the livery and stage busi ness at Pearce. Tombstone Prospector. OFFICIAL CHANGES. Mr. R. J. It sav ed my little boy's life and I feci that I cannot praise it enough. I bought a bottle of It from' A. K. Steere of Good win. S. D., and when I got home with it the poor baby could hardly breathe. I gave the medicine as directed every ten minutes until he 'threw up" and then I thought sure he was going to choke to death. We had to pull the phlegm out of his mouth in great long strings. I am positive that if I had not got that bottle of cough medicine, my boy would not be on earth today. Joel lipmont. In wood. Iowa. For sale by Elvey & Hulett. A story is told of Governor Shaw of Iowa in last year's campaign. Popu lists in the audience were asking a good many questions, especially one half drunken fellow. Governor Shaw an swered patiently and hided his time. A man well down in front insisted on asking a question every five minutes on an averagq. He usually prefaced them by sueh remarks as, "Just a min ute, please." or "Let me interrupt for a minute." In an unhappy moment he broke in with. "Pardon me. but" Before he could finish, the governor, a rather self satisfied look spreading over his face, replied: "Well. I've par doned lots worse fellows than you in my time, and I suppose it would be unjust to draw the line here." All druggists guarantee every bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and will refund the money to anyone who is not .satisfied after using two-thirds of the contents. She made him Quit his Evil Ways, and he did not Drink, nor Chew, nor Smoke, nor Swear, nor Stay out at Nights, In fact, he became as Mild as Skim Milk. Now, when this Result was Achieved, the Woman began to Worry. He had hJst his Charm for her. She Discovered that she had been more interested in his Faults than in his Virtues, because after she had Panned him out he didn't Assay worth a Cent along the Line of Good Qualities. He was simply a Neg ative Equation. But the Man had Some Sense, after all. He saw what was Bothering her. so he Swore just a Little, and Drank Just a Little, and Smoked occasionally, and took a Chew on the Sly. Then she had the Fun of. Reforming him all over Again.
