Even the poor, pant ing sufferer in the sick, room was for gotten while the fam ily gazed breathless at this strange tragedy of the air. Then they went back to the sick room to tell of the terrible struggle for life they had just witnessed. It did not occur to them that under their very eyes a more terrible, more pathetic struggle was going on daily. There can be nothing more pitiful than the struggle the consumptive makes against disease. The greatest help in this struggle is gained by the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis covery. It cures obstinate coughs, weak and bleeding lungs, emaciation, aud other ailments which if neglected or unskillfully treated find a fatal terrain, tion in consumption. " In 1898 one o my daughters was suffering cm account of severe cough, hectic fever, wasting of flesh and other gymptoitis of diaemard lana, writes Rev. Joseph H. Leonora Jackson, the well known vio linist, sailed last week fcr Europe on the North German Llyod liner "Grosser Kurfurst." The young artist, since her return from abroad in 1900, has mado two extensive tours of the United States, including the south and the south Pacific coast, and has won hosts of friends in all parts of the union. Uninfluenced by the prominence she has already attained, both in the eld world and the new, she intends devot ing now a year or rriore to special study with her former professors in Berlin, and will meanwhile discontinue concert ing. Miss Jackson will remain abroad two or more years. Dispatches indicate that Liebler and company in other words, George C. Tyler have found . in "The Eternal City" a drama for Viola Allen that will create a furore as did "The Christian," in which Miss Allen originally scored as a star under this management. As both plays are by Hall Caine, there can be no jealousy on the part of the play wright. "The Eternal City" had Its in itial presentation at the National thea ter, Washington, on October 6, and one cf the local critics describes it as a "masterful bit, of dramatic literature, the strongest play that has occupied a Washington stags for some years, not even excepting 'Du Barry,' " and adds that "Miss Allen's triumph as Don Iicma is genuine." Edward Morgan has a role of very unusual power, and E. M. Holland as the pope, Pius X., and Frederic de Relleville as Baron Bon elli also have striking characters, which they illustrate with remarkably skill. Perhaps the strongest scene Is In the garden cf the Vatican between the pope and Roma. Weedon Grossmith. the English come dian, opened the new, beautiful Prin cess theater, on Broadway near Twen- ty-eigth street, on October 6, In his own nlay. "The Night of the Party." lie played Crosbii?, a typical 'London man servant, who gives a party for his fel low flunkies when his master is pre sumably out cf town. Unexpectedly tho latter returns and the servants hastily conceal themselves and so becom eavesdroppers to a supposedly clandes tine meeting between the master and a married woman. Various attempts at blackmail on the part of his employer hv Crosbie provide the buine of the piece later on. and the first night audi ence laughed uproariously and voted the production the funniest they had noted since the work of another Eng lish comedian, Brandon Thomas's "Charley's Atmt." had been called to their attention. Herbert Sleath. Maud Hobson. May Palfrey and Wilfred Draycott render excellent support, and the Shubert brothers and Daniel V. Ar thur, who control the enterprise, have a positive winner. Those who saw George Ade's merry r.inpi-nl suttre "The Sultan of Sulu" at the Studebaker theater, in Chicago, last spring will hardly recognize it at the present time. It has been cut from three acts to two, and It is stated that every superfluous line, hns been edited out. Henry W. Savage will produce Mr. Ade's new musical comedy, "Peggy from Paris," during the present season, and it is understood that it will have a very elaborate production and a most excellent cast. This frcm the London Daily Mail: "When the run of "The Marriage of Kitty" finishes at the Duke of York's Charles Frohman will transfer Maria Tempest to New Tork. This will ba Miss Tempest's, first appearance in America as a comedy actress, though she Is well known there as the prima donna of comic, opera." o A REMINISCENCE. The announced death of Mrs. Mary Beebe Cutler In Brookline the present week brings to mind that Mrs. Cutler was the original prima donna of the Ideal opera company formed in this city. Its purpose was at first ccrfflned to the pioducti;n of the "Pinaore." then the ra'ge in theatrical affairs. Mr. Henry C. Barnabee, who is still at the head of the company that has become its successor, was engaged for Sir Joseph Porter. Then there was Myron W. Whitnoy, the great basso, for Cap tain Corccrcn; Tom Karl for Ralph Rackstrav.-, and Mr. Gilbert for Dick Deadeye. Of the women. Adelaide Phillips, a superior star contralto, con sented to appear as Little Euttercup and George Cayvan, then beginning as a public reader what afterward proved to be a distinguished dramatic career, was made the Hebe, considerably be cause of her personal beauty, for no one cn the American stage ever seems to have seen the satire that Mr. W. S. Gilbert intended In the name of Heb;. But. with these all relected. no Jose phine had been found. In this emer gency Miss Mary Beebs appeared frcm the west. She already knew the part, had studied and committed it. and she proved to have a good voice, a per sonable presence and competent act ing capacity. She was at once engaged and proved to be a success. With the exception of herself and Mr. Karl the members of the company were all Bcston people. Boston Herald. o "IT GOES RIGHT TO THE SPOT." When pain or irritation exists on any part of the body, the application of Ballard's Sncw Liniment will give prompt relief. "It goes right to the spot," said an old man who was rub bing it in to cure his rheumatism. C. R. Smith, proprietor Smith house. Ten aba. Texas, writes: "I have used Bal lard's now Liniment in my family for several years, and have found It to be a fine remedy for all aches and pains, and I recommend it for pains In the throat and chest." 25c. 50c and Jl at Elvey & Hulett's, druggists. EXPLAINED AT LAST. Ti frequency and freedem with which the self-governing citizens of our sister republics across the Carib bean feel constrained to go out and shoot, or rather shoot at. their self governing fellow citizens is a contin ual source of wonder and amazement tc the American people. Upon the puzzling and obscure sub ject Jose Ignacio Diaz Barcenas, Vene zuelan consul at Philadelphia, In an Interview in the North American news paper of that city .has let in not mere ly a ray, but a whole flood of light. "mericans," he remarks, "do not un derstand South American revolutions." We plead guilty. We do not, or rather we did not until Jose ,Ignacio Diaz Barcenas came to cur aid. "You take them," he adds, "too seri ously." In view of the efforts of our newspaper paragraphers and of cur cartoonists this accusation seems somewhat unkind. But let that pass. She is one of the social favorites of her home and her recovery to health has permitted her to enjoy the company of her many friends instead of lvinir on a bed of sickness and suffering. I suffered for three years with terrible bearing-down pains at the menstrual period. I could hardly stand on my feet and was never real well. Wine of Cardui was the only medicine that I could depend on to do me any good, as I tried several with no suc cess. The transfer of Consul General Bragg from Havana to Hong Kong is an example of the right thing done in the right way. at the right time, by the state department. The case was - a queer one. The unhappy classification cf the Latin race a3 a pig's tail, from which Uncle Sam could hope to whit tle a satisfactory whistle upon which to pipe the tunes of liberty and pros perity, was one of the diplomatic blunders that are worse than crimes. But If a man may not be Indiscreet in a letter to his own wife, our foreign st rvice' would require more than mere mortal gifts in our representatives. The unfortunate publicity given to th- remark, through no fault of Gen eral Bragg, constituted his sole offenF- and it would, have been unfair to de grade or dismiss a good public servant for the error of others.
