Attention Newsdealers The Republican will be the only pa per Wednesday morning to give the complete elect Urn returns, not only from Arizona, but from the entire country. Newsdealers who desire to Increase their regular orders stould ndvise the business office immediately. Mr. Smith and Statehood Having in a thoughtless moment committed ti'.mself to the absurd prop osition that Arizona will more readily obtain statehood by displeasing the re publican members of the United States senate, Mark Smith sees no way out of his predicament except to stick sullen ly by his statement. Evidently, he is prepared to ignore the fact that the af front which he offers to the intelligence of Arizona voters will not work to his own advantage hereafter. However, if Manning and Ives of Tucson are elect ed to represent Pima-Santa Cruz and Yuma counties In the council, and a legislature is elected which will be put ty In the hands of Ives and Manning, the Southern Pacific company may be forced to come down with that fat con tract for the furnishing of laborers and supplies to the company and in that event Mr. Smith might afford to get out of politics. He and Manning and Ives could then be on a financially easy street. We are sorry thnt it r'uffles Mr. Smith's temper when we allude to the absurdity of his position on the state hood question. lie certainly cannot charge The Republican with unfairness toward him. This paper has taken care to give full credit for all that he has done for statehood and has repeatedly stated that he Is entitled to the grati tude of all Arizona people. Perhaps he feels that we rhould refrain from men tioning the great work done in the same cause by the republican dele gates from New Mexico and Oklaho ma? It Is pleasant for Mr. Smith, of course, to have the people of this ter ritory regard him as "the whole works' in congress, and we do not care. But he should not feel aggrieved when his ridiculous arguments are punctured. Mr. Smith is forced to admit that if Oklahoma goes democratic next Tues day, and Arizona goes democratic also, "the present status of the omnibus bill will be disturbed." He wishes to leave the Impression that both New Mexico and Oklahoma are sure to elect repub lican delegates and his newspaper clac cjuers are industriously circulating the statement that "the democrats in New Mexico will make it unanimous for Ilodey, and in Oklahoma the democrats are organizing hunting parties for elec tion day fo as to give a free field to the republicans." It is remarkable, when so much is at stake, that demo crats should be so partisan as to put statehood in peril in order merely to give a comparatively insignificant office to J. F. Wilson! Every intelligent democrat In this territory knows that the chances are nearly all in favor of the democrats carrying Oklahoma by a great majoii ty. New Mexico probably will go re publican, although II.- B. Fergusson. the democratic candidate is making a most energetic canvass, and the democrats are confident. Fergusron carried the territory by nearly 2,000 in 1SP6. However, it is fair to ass-unie that there is enough intelligence la New Mexico to re-elect Mr. Rodcy. In Okla homa the democrats are making the most aggressive campaign in the his tory of the territory. They arc insist ing that statehood for that territory is assured anyhow, and jeer at the repub lican argument that the statehood bill Fhiuld be a factor in the canvass. Ok lahoma is normally democratic by at lrast 5.000 majority. The democrats of that territory are undoubtedly correct Oklahoma, with hor COO. COO people and one hundred millions 'of taxable wealth will be admitted this winter, regardless cf the fate of Arizona and New Mexico. In the Kansas City Star of October 23 Is this dispatch fiom Guthrie, Okla homa: "I am quoted as estimating that the majority of Cross over McOulre will be five hundred." said W. M. Anderson, chairman of the democratic campaign committee. "Just multiply this num ber by ten and you will have five thous and. That's what Cross's majority will be. The mistake was due to a typo graphical error." All the newspapers, republican and democratic, which are covering the Ok lahoma field by special correspondence, agioo that "it loot's democratic" by a decided majority. Mr. Smith, when he quotes Senator Quay, should have the frankness to ad mit that the senator was assuming that Oklahoma would return Flynn, the re publican, to (ongress. Finally. Mr. Smith fails to be candid with his constituents when he alludes to tho democratic minority in the sen ate. The facts are, that until the 4th of March next, when the Fifty-seventh congress will adjourn sine die. Dele gates Smith, Rode-y and Flynn will have charge of the omnibus bill. The same democratic senators who have hereto fore advocated the admission of the territories will be in their seats this winter. Delegate Smith will work Jus as valiantly for statehood this winter as he did last. So will delegates Flynn and Rodey. If some of the democratic senators are playing peanut pontics and have advocated the admission of Arizona because they thought the ter ritory safely democratic, Mr. Smith can allay any fears aroused by the election of Mr. Morrison. He can assure , his democratic friends that the state of Arizona will be debatable ground with chances equal for the democrats, at least, and we have no doubt that h? will assure them that he is confident of carrying"the new ctate for the dem ocratic party. What Wilson Stand War We violate no secret In stating that Candidate Wilson stands for the same things that he stood for six weeks ago He has grown more prudent, that Is all Prudence has been pounded Into him by the democratic managers.- They have bought up and burned the re ports of his anarchistic, populistic and repudiation speeches delivered early In the campaign; they have censored his later speeches, and they have taken him into back rooms and profanely told him what he should say and what he should leave unsaid. But Wilson himself has not changed in the least. He still believes in array ing labor against capital in Arizona. He still believes in the bourbonism which has made his own state of Ar kansaw the mwt backwoods section of the United States. He still believes that a legislature should be elected which will "cinch" all the railroads in the territory by repealing the present lax laws and turning the roads over to the mercies o" blackmailers in each county armed with a "mileage license" law. He still believes that the people should elect a legislature which will en act this proposed mileage license law. and make Its provisions extend to the railways which have been formally ex empted from taxation for a term of years by the legislative power of the territory. In other words, his position is thi3: He sees that in compliance with the Invitation Issued by democrat ic legislatures through the exemption statutes, capitalists have invested their money by the millions in building new railroads in the territory. Now that the roads are in operation, and at though the exemptions expire shortly, Wilson would have the territory go on record as formally repudiating the laws heretofoie unanimously and solemnly enacted! He is probably lawyer enough to know that by no possibility could these exemption contracts be dis turbed by any form of legislation, mile age license or otherwise, but such is his hatred for the progressive spirit which is building up Arizona, so deeply is he poisoned with the venom of populism, that he would have the territory regis ter an attempt at repudiation, merely to emphasize a hatred for all capital. In no degree has Wilson changed since he boldly advocated these doc trines in his speech in this county. Wilson stands for nothing construc tive or progressive. He is personified negation. He is completely out of touch with the splendid Americanism which is converting the deserts of Ari zona into a hive of prosperous industry. At no place has he laid one brick upon lop of another. At no place has he made two blades of grass grow where one grew before. In no instance has he been instrumental in bringing a sin gle dollar Into the territory. On the contrary, he stands and has stocd for those; things which keep capital away. He represents nothing but greed for office. If elected, he would be a mill-stone around the neck3 of our advocates for statehood, because many republicans senators would assume that the elec tion of a man of his calibre and tend encies meant Arizona's repudiation of all that republicanism stands for, . If Mark Smith this winter works In good faith and with all his energy for statehood and nobody doubts that he will he will lose none of his Influence with the democratic senators because of the election of Mr. Morrison. And on the other hand, the election of Mr. Morrison will bring to the support of the statehood bill a number of senators who are now undecided. This is the whole case, in a nutshell. Charles V. Barnett as deputy record er virtually had charge of that office for two years, and In appreciation of his great efficiency the voters elected him county assessor. In the latter oirice he has been equally courteous and efficient, and has given complete satisfaction to everybody. He should be elected county recorder by a great majority. Judge C. W. Johnstone and Judge Gilbert D. Gray, the republican candi dates for justice of the peace In tho Phoenix precinct, have both seen long and honorable service as justices, and both are exceptionally well qualified for tho duties of the office. Each of them will command the full republican strength, and draw largely from the democrats. The amiable Mr. Cleary, manager of the canal companies, doubtless consid ers that he has good reasons for oppos ing the republican candidates for the legislature. And yet the republican candidates can be depended upon to be manly and fair on every question that comes before them. Mark Smith should cheer up. The people see through his statehood bunco talk, but they do not propose tohol.l an eternal grudge against him on that account. His many good qualities will always be remembered by his old-tim friends t The fine workers who tried to run the tissue ballots In upon the Maricopa county voters would do well to give up trying to explain. Democratic super visors rejected the job, and no amount of explaining will change the ugly facts. 'The "phony" ballots were intended hy democrats to keep other democrats In line. Rut the job ended in failure, and now there are more democrats than ever who will vote for Morrison and the republican county candidates. Above all things, Mark mith should keep his temper. When a "green goods" man in tin? cast fails to iaak? one of his confidence games "work" on the coine-on from the country, lie merely laughs and tries it again. It is evident from Wilson's talk that he and the Prescott Courier and their fellow populists have been bumped pretty hard by the sagacious demo crats. But the leopards have not changed their spots. J. C. Phillips has made a fine can vass for the office of probate judge, and his election seems very probable. Wily Cook is now so far ahead of Stout in the race for sheriff that it ia only a question of majority. The mudslinging against Judge Kib bey having ceased, it is possible that his majority will not exceed 200. LITTLE JAMES (Concerning the Spread of Skepticism in Arizona.)
