Gardner, 305 South Sprinc Street. union()labcl rilOENIX. ARIZONA. DEC. 9, 1902. The Business Men of Los Angeles, and Senator Bard. . The villainous slander launched against Arizona by Thomas Robert Bard, United States senator from Cali fornia, has been resenteu by the busi ness men of Los Angeles in a proper manner and in the proper spirit. The following telegram was sent to the junior California senator by the Job bers' Association of Los Angeles: "Jobbers' Association of Los Angeles urges you to reconsider your stand against Arizona statehood. The busi ness interests of southern California are practically unanimous for state hood." With most senators such an expres sion as this telegram from the whole sale business men of Los Angeles would nave great weight. But we do not an ticipate that it will have any influence whatever with Senator Bard. An ig norant man is invariably stubborn. And the density of ignorance concerning Arizona which Mr. Bard ha displayed makes his a hopeless case. We wish to be charitable, and attribute his attack to ignorance. If ho knew better, and deliberately gave utterance to defama tory falsehoods, it is equally hopeless to expect him to reconsider his position. Such a man would pay no attention, were all the business men of California to unite in asking him to support Ari zona. On behalf of the people of this territory we beg to assure the Jobbers' Association of Los Angeles that the kind interest which the members or that association have taken in the statehood cause is deeply appreciated, and will not be forgotten, but it is a waste of time to argue or plead with Bard. The most that the association can hope for is that Mr. Bard will re frain from attacking his own state. He has not hesitated, it appears, to proclaim to the world t.ie siliy yarn that "Arizona has reached the maxi mum of development at least for a long period." He made this statement in face cf the fact that the activity in Arizona mining districts is greater now than ever before in the history of the territory. Hundreds of valuable mines and prospects are being brought to a state of production, and the whole mining industry was never on such a prosperous footing. Every important copper mine so far developed ha shown ore bodies which cannot be ex hausted within another generation. Every gold mine in operation Is show ing better values and more extensive ore bodies as lower depths are reached. John Hays Hammond and other compe tent engineers have' estimated that the mines of the Rand can be operated to a depth of 6,000 to 8,000 feet, and their Judgment has been accepted as so con clusive that the great financiers of the world are preparing to make a stupen dous loan to Great Britain, taking the taxes from the Rand mines as security. It has been demonstrated beyond all doubt that the gold arid copper mines of Arizona, like those of the Rand, "go down" and that they also Improve with depth that, in effect, they are practi cally Inexhaustible. The Congress, the Pearce, the Fortuna, the King of Ari zona, the Tombstone and the other gold mines which are now operated at mod erate derths. will, thirty years from now, be yielding still their precious treasures from depths a mile and more beneath the surface. Long before that time shall have arrived hundreds of other gold mines, now in their Infancy, will be in active production, and will have before them a lease of life equal to the mines we have named. Years after Thomas Robert Bard has been forgotten in Hueneme, California, where he has lived for thirty years, the United Verde, and other copper mines at Jerome, in Yavapai county, the Old Dominion, the United Globe, the Black Warrior In Gila, the Trey and Manhattan and other copper mines now in operation in Pinal county, the great copper producers which i already have made Clifton and Morenc! ' world-famous; the Copper Queen' at Bisbee and not a few other coppet mines which have aided to make i the reputation of Arizona as one of the most remarkable copper regions In the ' I world, will still be producing corper regularly. And in addition to them the scores of copper properties at present in course of development will havr i made names for themselves where ve.- copper mines are discussed. Were Senator Bard capable of look ing Into the future, or in any direction except where his bosses tell him, he would see that, excluding copper an. I gold, in the production of which Ari zona is certain to take first place within a few years, the territory has a j wealth of silver and lead, of iron and manganese, of marble and onyx, which would be sufficient whereon to found a commonwealth. The distinguished statesman from Hueneme is also of the opinion that there Is to be no further agricultural development in the terri tory. Well, ten years from now, let Aiizona be state or territory, there will be 500,000 people in our agricultural valleys. Phoenix will have at least 50, 000 inhabitants. Beeves to the valu; of $10,000,000 yearly will be furnished to California by our alfalfa fields, and packing houses on the banks of the Salt river will send meats to all points in the mountain and coast country. Agricultural development has been retarded because congress would not permit the people of Arizona to Co any thing for themselves in the way of ob taining capital, and until last year the government took no steps to utilize th- supply of water for irrigation. All these facts are so trite that if they had no effect on Senator Bard, no requests from business men, however urgent, will influence him to take the side of Justice. Democrats, and Their Imaginary Chickens. In view of all the facts, it is rather premature for the democrats to begin parceling among themselves the offices under the state government of Arizona, but the democratic doctrine as to office seeking is that it is better to be sudden than left. The homely admonition to avoid counting chickens before they are hatched, is evidently a back number piece of wisdom. As yet, there are no offices to be passed around. Not only are the chickens still unhatched, but the senatorial hen must be coaxed by republicans to remain on the state hood nest. During the last campaign Mark Smith insisted upon "monkey ing" with the eggs, and, w hile he- jug gled with them, he Insisted that there would be a great hatching if the people would only send Wilson on to Wash ington to watch things. Wilson was elected, but everything else Is still un certain. Notwithstanding this situation, how ever, the politicians and organs repre sentative of the Smith wing of the Arizona democracy continue to appor tion the prospective offices among themselves. They began with the senatorships, and the office of governor, and thus far have everything settled. Charlie Shannon Is to be governor, and Mark Smith and John C. Herndon are to be senators. According to the able editorials in the Smith organs, there is no need to discuss these offices further. The only doubt remaining is us to the other places, and some of them are staked out. For Instance, Judge A. C. Baker Is to have a place on the supreme bench, Ives Is to be elected to the legislature again, to protect the In terests of the laboring men especially the miners and Frank Cox Is to go to congress. What are the Wilson crowd to get? The leading members are to be fur nished with a primary history of ex plorations in Sonora. Some of the smaller fry are to be taken care of in subordinate places, in consideration of their coming over to the Smith faction. As to Wilson himself, the "glneral" is to be sent away back, and he can then sit down or not as he chooses. Demo crats like Judge (Barnes, who consider themselves too large to wear the collar of any boss or faction ,are to be Ig nored except when the hat Is passed around. The programme is very beautiful, and is saturated with harmony. The Wil son democrats are to have harmony and consolation of the buzzard and turkey sort. There Is no doubt, as we have stated heretofore, that the "fine workers" of the party are mostly In the Smith faction, and Smith's prestige was greatly increased by his rescue of Wilson from the jaws of defeat, but It Is folly to suppose that Wilson and his followers will tamely consent to being shelved. Their late victory only whetted their appetites for office. Should the democrats carry the new state, it would be very difficult for other aspirants to crowd Mark Smith out of one of the senatorships. He needs to fear political oblivion only in the event of the defeat - of statehood. He realized, doubtless, that during th last campaign he was staking his whole future on one cast of the dice. But excepting Smith, the democratic slate-makers are engaged in an idle Co AND HAIR TONIC GROWS NEW HAIR. Cures Dandruff, scalp eruptions, Don't accept imitations, they may permanently injure. The woods are full of ambi tious democrats who will come out Into the open as soon as the offices are actually In sight. And In any event, this early demo cratic dickering and quarreling is ovr something as shadowy as moonbeams. If Arizona Is admitted it will be bv virtue of republican work, and despite Wilson's election. And the result Df Robert E. Morrison's campaign shows that the republicans will carry th state of Arizona. Pure and Impure Food. Although conceived and entered upon In all seriousness. Professor Wiley's ex periments with the digestion of a dozen men in the agricultural department convey to the general public an im pression of fantastical absurdity. Not that the task assigned is without im portance, since nobody pretends to deny its intimate relation to our social and industrial system. Food exjwrts and food products for domestic mar kets must be rendered immune to early decay, and the ingenuity of ehemlsti has been exhausted in discovering and devising preservatives to this end. The claim is made that certain compound? are not injurious to health as. Indeed, exjierience extending over a quarter ot a century apparently indicates. Put boric and salicylic acids and formalde hyde are not foods, nor even food prod ucts. They arrest decay by checking fermentation, and this purely Ay chemical i inalogous to action is in the no sense a the natural processes of. digestion. No certificate from the division of chem istry, though fortified -over and ov;r again with records of actual experi ments, would convince the consuming public that chemical preservatives are not to be avoided as a dietary element in every-day life. Nevertheless, since food adulteration and the use of preservatives and color ing matter have become permanent an 1 accepted factors in American commerce and consumption, the Wiley experi ment, if faithfully carried out. should serve to enhance the limited fund of scientific information on this subject. For a quarter of a century sanftary ex perts have been divided in opinion. Oil the one hand it is maintained that food adulteration is a crime against the consuming public; on the other, with equal vigor, it is contended that noth ing evil can come out of the practice, while the resulting cheapening of the product is of real and immediate benefit to the public. The doctors disagree, and Professor Wiley and his twelve de voted disciples undertake to decide thi long-vexed question. It i3 one thing, however, to accumu late a mass of sanitary statistics con cerning a few isolated individuals, ami quite another matter to bring public opinion upon a level with purely scien tific deductions. Though food adulter ants be never so strongly approver, and though men and women thrive and grow fat on them, yet will there remain an inextinguishable longing for th'; flesh pots untouched by acids an.1 alkalis. The human stomach has its prejudices and will not listen to reason when these are in question.
