It may have been noted with sur prise by some readers of The Repub lican that the Sunday school of the M. K. church South held no Christmas exercises. The reason for it is an in teresting one and at the same time il lustrates the real heart interest that all the members of that church and Sunday school take in their work and worship. The sorvisos were omitted this year on account of the death a few clays ago of Mrs. Alsap, one of the oldest residents of the city, and a woman v.'n.i was universally loved and re spected. Mrs. Alsap has always taken a great interest in the work of that church and has frequently been refer red to as th mother of that Sunday school. She has been foremost In pre paring the little ones for Christmas and similar entertainments for yec.rs before and her daughter, Miss Maggie, has been the organist. With her death therefore, not only the family and immediate friends, but the entire, congregation of the churc h and Sunday , school lelt deeply bereaved. Her de till being so recent there was no spirit for merry-making ;;mong them. 1 It was decided therefore to omit the j usual Christmas festivities and in lieu I or them make a Christmas offering i which will be used for the construction of a memorial window for Mis. Aisuji. in the new church. o LITERARY NOTES Tt. II. Kussell, 3 West Twenty-ninth street. New York, a well known pub lisher who is turning out a fine line cf up-to-date books, good to read dur ing the holidays or at any other time, is advertising two humorous volumes. One Is the new .Dooley book, by F.' p. Dunne. Observations by Mr. Dooley. price $l.r0. is the latest volume of the Ar-chey Uoad philosophy, as report -u by F. 1. Dunne, ami many critics wilj be of the opinion that it is the best that he has given us. The humor with out bitterness, the fun that never wounds, the wit so light and sure, ani the keen sense lurking underneath ail these are most agreeably manifest In this new book of Mr. Dooley's observa tions. It includes such telling hits a "Mr. Dooley on Sherlock Holmes," on "Art Patronage," on "The Corona tion." on "The Philippine Peace," on "The Fghting Word." on "The Home Life of Ceniuses," on "Arctic Explora tion," etc. A critic in a Fiench literary journal said leoently that "Mr. - Dooley" a;; K;ared to be the most important liter ary man in America. It is certain that no other public man or writer is so universally popular. His latest work proves that time's only effect uixm him is to mellow his rare qualities. The other book referred to is "Tii Girl Proposition," a bunch of he and she fables, by George Ade. On account of the popularity of George Ade, some body the other day proposed that a chair of American slang be founded in each of our principal colleges. But the people don't have to go to college to understand Oeorge Ade. He writes in America nose, a language they all un derstand, and about people everybody knows. You like the book because the Iitigh always seems to be on the othei it mi. .... iciiow. meres a great Knack in writ ing that sort of book. "The Girl Proposition." Mr. Ade's lat est' book, hovers around a subject thai is very cieur to the author's heart. an1 perhaps interests more people In gen eral than any other that could be named. It is packed with sense and wit and entertainment, all in the inim itable Ade vein, and it marks the best work this popular writer has yet done. The book is profusely illustrated b Holma and MeCutcheon, and is pub lished in a quaintly attractive style. Two editions of Ruth Kimball Gard iner's "In Happy Far-A way Land" have been exhausted and the publishers are bending every effort toward getting the third edition out in time for the holidays. Although some jobbers in the west and southwest have laid in i. stock, the book is so scarce east thai it is stated upon good authority to be selling at an advance price. The phe nomenal sale of the book is not at nil surprising in view of the fact that, tu addition to its merit as a child's book. Inculcating lofty sentiments by moan of ioautiful fairy tales, it is one of ih. prettiest volumes from a mechanical point of view ever published. it i something entirely out of the ordinary. ..v. iu u...ii-udie wnat mis means no! more need be said of the book than that it has established the reputation of Zimmerman's, publishers, 15C Fifth avenue. Rather a mysterious incident curred Saturday night that never found its way; into newspaper c hannels till V't- rday. A Mexican who had been working sum. .vherr in the coun try came to town and got on a little holiday spree. The next morning lie awoke on the city garbage, dump In the river bed at the fott ofg South Seventh street. In the course o" time he discovered that he was not dead but that be was nut very much alive. He managed to attract the .attention of some one iii.i brought him to town and gave him medical attention after which he was taken to the county hospital. His fao was batterer almost to a pulp, his scalp was cut in several plaerp in a manner suggesting some blunt instru ment and there was a stab wound in his side a little to the left of his stom ach. He is doing well so far and the chances for recovery are in his favor. The strangest part of the incident me ract mat ne. cannot recall having trouble with anybody and has no ids of how lie received his wounds. o if!1 A J. A gi ntleman famibar with conditions on Cave Creek and in other outlying section suggests a means by which certain Phoenix merchants can enlarge their trade if they will take th - trouble to do so. What is generally meant by that exprc ssien i.i the ore'., ring by Ph'jonix people, of certain guod-c by catalogue fro;-.! large department :torr i in the cities but what i. meant by It in thl.- iurtar.ee is tlie ordering of mail-order g oJs from Phoenix by residents in outlying country distriets like Cave Crc.-k where there are prac tically no stor. s. Tho matter in que:-: Han is the pet-fee t ir.g by these merchants of their ni ail -! vice- so J'S to make prompt returns to their patron.-. Many of these dis tricts are serve- ! by mall rout, s that run twice o:' three times a week.
