Mary Annetta Irvine was married to Edward Irvine, a widower, at Fairville, New Brunswick, in 1S6T. They lived to gether for nearly tv.o years and had two children. Shortly before ihe birth of hi sconl child, without notice or difficulty with the yovng mother, and accompanied by his son, Joiseph Irvine, by a former marriage. Edward Irvine abandoned his home and fairily and c.a.me to Phoenix ater having resided for some time In California. The wife heard no word from him for seven years. Meantime Edward frvine prospered at Phoenix and icQuired valuable i ioi erty at his new home. . He became prominent in church work, and no one knew he was married. In 1830 he mar ried Izora E. Jacksan, and by her he has reared a family of eight children. In 1SS7 he returned to New Brunswick and. visited his two children and his first or rather his second w;fe, and shortly afterward Induced his son and later his daughter to come to Phoenix with him. Here for several years they were sup posed to be his nephew and neicf. Thjy eventually sent for their mother. Mary Annetta Irvine, who joined them about 1895. The New Brunswick wife v.as not an advocate of secrecy. This suit he afterward dismissed and It never came to trial. Meanwhile Irvine hd nev?r sought the society of his second wife but con tinued to live openly with his lart wife. Izora Irvine, and her children. This situation continued until the United States grand jury Indicted him and tried him for unlawful cohabitation under the well known act of congress for the suppression of rclygamy In the territories. ' This occurred nearly six years ago and after Irvine had lived at Phoenix over thirty years. He was prominent in the business and social world of LPhoenix. a devout Methodist nr.d a well known factor in every progressive en terprise in Salt River valley. His con duct tor years had been exemplary, and many of his associates refused to credit the accusation against him. He was defended by the ablest coun sel In Arizona who pleaded with the jury not to return v?rdict of guilty for the sake of lzjra "Irvine and her children who were at his side during the trial. Said one of his attorneys: "Gentlemen, do not by your vercjkt. place the stamp of illegitimacy on these innocent children." All of these facts became public prop city in that trial, but Elwavd Irvine was acquitted. He and Izora Irvine continued to !iv in their birga brick residence on the east side of Phoenix, while Mary Annetta and her eii and daughter live in a modest home ?outh of town. At the time of the trial Edward Ir vr. frankly admitted both marriages, claiming as justification for hi3 second marriage that some one had told him hi3 first wife was dead. Phoenix people are accustomed to speak of Mrs. Irvine No. 1 and Mrs. Irvine No. 2. although his son Joseph is hi3 son by his first wife, who died while Irvine was a young man. Edward Irvine 13 a man pver seventy years of age, and Joseph is nearing fifty. With the exception of the extra ordinary complication cf domesti-: re lations in which they are all involved, all are estimable people, respected, and prominent in business ind church cir cles. In the last phase of the maiter, the suit of Mary Annetta for a divorce, a receivership .-nd division of the proper ty, it is charged that all the transfers m.ide to the last wife and to the son Joseph are with the sole intention of defrauding her of her community inter est therein.
