Yesterday u marked copy of the Warren (O.) Tribune in which atten tion is called to the following- editorial under the hoad of "Mormons to Cap ture Arizona," was received at this office: '"The authorities of the Mormon church are evidently planning to get control of the politics of Arizona and New Mexico by "the lime they are ready for statehood. To accomplish this they appear to be adopting the plan of transplanting bright young Mormon attorneys and politicians from Utah to the territories that are now fighting for admission to the union. These young- men are expected to jump Into public affairs and be ready to be sent to Washington as senators and representatives, and to take, posses sion of the local offices. A clear case in poir.t is the transfer from Richfield to St. Johns, Ariz., of George II. Cros by. David Udall, the president of the St. John's stake, held out the allure ments that there was not a Mormon lawyer in the entire territory of Ari zona; that he cculd start in as prose cuting attorney of Apache county, and that there was no limit to the bright prospects ahead of him. Mr. Cro3by announced his willingness to go." We presume that this is a faint echo of the Mormon scare which arose in the United States senate in the course of the statehood debate last winter. So tar as we can gather from the editorial the supposition that the Mormon chunh intends to capture the terri tory against its admission to state hood by coljr.lzir.g- it with lawyers and politicians rests on the proposed trans plantation of Mr. Crosby. Whatever alarm that may exist is somewhat alleviated by the farther statement that there is at the present time no Mormon lawyer in the territory. We do not think tht is so, though at the moment we can recall no attorney of the Mormon faith. Until we have had confirmatory news of the movement described by the Tribune we must firmly decline to be come panic stricken at the prospect of Mormon political ascendency in this territory. Resurrection of Tombstone. There is every prospect now that Tombstone will enjoy all the prosperity of its palmiest days without any of the wildners and wooliness of that golden period. The resurrection was appro priately celebrated and the manner of the celebration has been made known to the advantage of the new town, in the-cast where roughness or readiness has not always been looked upon ask ance. Of the celebration the New York Commercial said: ' "Tombstone, Arizona, is a place with a pa? I that is fitting for a town car rying fuch a baptismal name. The citi zens of that place hope it has a future, too, but of late it hasn't had any "pres ent." In fact, it was a dead town, and Us cheerful name was an appropilato tablet to its memory. "Some enterprising railroad men have built a railroad through there, nnd that's what has given its citizens a fair hope for the future. They pro posed to celebrate the opening of the road and their improved prospects, and in a meeting' held Fome weeks ago the date was discussed and the balance of opinion favored Easter Sunday. There were to be races and greased-pole climbing and fireworks with other sim ilar festivities; but some of the plous-ly-nrjlnded of Tombstone didn't approve of the day or the manner of celebrat ing. The majority carried it3 point by saying that nothing could be more suitable for Easter Sunday than to celebrate t'.ie resurrection from the dead cf their city, and so the Easter celebration took place In the manner indicated.-' Removal of the Roof. Tho Young Men's Democratic club appears. but only appear", to have been hemmed in, repressed restrained end otherwise hampered by the age limit. Therefore at a meeting held the other nisht there was done what is some times done at poker tables, to meet the demands of gentlemen of more than average adventurous disposition; the roo? was taken off. There 13 no sere limit now. As a matter of fact what ever limit there has been for years ex isted only In the by-laws of that politi- Two Secrets of Success The success of The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York is due. Any man not prevent ed by senility from' walking to the rooms of the club has been considered eligibte to membership. The action c: the club in this respect was therefore a changing of the by-laws to make them consonant with a long existing fact. Now if the name should be changed an objection to the organiza tion would be partially met for It is an undoubted fact that there are many democrats to whom even the nam by which the club has become so well known is distasteful. There Is fre quently much in a name. The by-laws of the club were changed in another respect imd it is thereby shown that the result of the primaries last fall and of the city election has not been lost on the leaders cf the club. By the change an officer of the club ceases to be an officer when he becomes a candidate for o;!lce. It had long been a tenet of the club that no man was rightfully entitled to consid eration by the democratic party unless he were a member of the club; that only the worthiest members should be come candidates end it happened nat urally that the officers of the organiza tion were chosen from the worthiest. Experience has taught that too flosc association with the club has not been beneficial to the political ambition. So. hereafter when a young democrat comes before the people it is provided that as much as possible of his past shall be veiled; at least his connection with the club shall not be obtrusive. It is not apprehended that ths Pres byterian General assembly shortly to convene in Los Angeles will take any action on the resolution which it was sought to introduce into the Presbytery here favoring the construction of the San Carlos dam. Thi3 subject is so far outside of the purview of that dig nified and conservative body that the consideration of it may be considered utterly improbable. It happens though that the representatives to the general assembly from this territory are Dr. Brockway and the Rev. Mr. Meeker, both of Pinal county and it may be understood that a failure of action by the assembly on such a resolution will be no fault of the delegates. The action of the board of super visors yesterday in ordering that the county shall become a member of the Water Users' association is significant In that it shows a general falling in with the movement for the building of the Tonto P3Sin reservoir. Supervisor Miller of the board has been until now opposed to the signature of the articles. He is is only one of many of the lead ing farmers of the valley who within the last week have agreed that nothing else will so much conduce to. the pros perity of the county. ' Colonel "Bill" Phclp3 of Missouri, who was in the city yesterday, denies with an earnestness which enforces conviction that he has ever mixed him self up with any kind -of baking pow der. There is so much of an uncer tainty about the constituent elements of the best brands of baking powder that the housewives of the country must feel a sense of gratitude to Col onel Hill for not having further com plicated the compound. i CURRENT COMMENT x'Xx:xxx:x-xxv Famous Old Yacht.
