Resent Misrepresentation byLos Angel
es Times of Phoenix Republicans.
A gnat "leal of indignation has been
riwMised among the democrats of Phoe
nix by the publication of an article in
the Los Angeles Times to which refer
ence has been made in the Republican.
It appeared in the form of a dispatch
from Phoenix and said that but for -the
good work ot the republicans of this
eily in throwing cold water upon the
reception -of the Hearst party would
have been a success.
The democrats relieve the republi
cans of the charge of having acted In
any other than the mcst hospital man
ner toward the distinguished visitors.
Mr. F. P. Trctt. one of. the most prom
inent democrats in the territory, and
a momber of the reception committee
and one cf the party who went to meet
the visitors, said tha: Mr. Fowler of
the board of trade and Mayor Bennett
could not have been warmer in their
manner toward the :nembers of the
party if they had been republicans.
The committees in the first place had
been appointed by Mr. Fowler and he
had given three of the places out of
four to democrats.
Both Mr. Fowler arid Mr. Bennett
labored for a day or two before the
arrival of the party to get things in
readiness for their reception and they
continued their good offices until after
the departure of the visitors. Mr.
Trott was with both gentlemen most
of the time duting the stay, of th
party in the city and testifies
that
they left nothing undone to make then
visit a pleasant one.
The same warmth o:f welcome. Mr.
Trctt says, was' shown by all repufcli
ans whom, he met. He said that all
of them contributed as liberally as the
democrats to the fund for the recep
tion. The committee apixinted to raise
the fund decided before setting out
that only donations of fcn would be ac
cepted, no more, no l?ss. The com
mittee app cached only, persons who
could afford to make suc;h contribu
tions and in no case was it refused by
a republican. One democrat, however,
a wealthy man and prominent in his

HE PREFERRED DEATH
An Indian Convict Ta.Ken Through
Phoenix Yeste rday.
Sheriff Hoi ck of Navajo, county and
Probate Judge F. J. Wattron of the
same county, arYived from the north
yesterday morning with a lot of pris
oners for Yuma. Thev Were convict
ed at Holbrook last iveek. Probate
Judge Wattron is on his way to Los
Angeles. There are six of the -c?nvict,
three white men, two negroes and one
Indian. The Indian is u Navajj and
was sentenced to five years in the
penitentiary for an asttault upon a
white woman with intent to commit
murder.
He came very near escaping the
execution of his sentence by execut
ing a more severe one uooa himself.
On the morning the sh'riff left Hol
brook with him he tried to strangle
himself with a rope made- of a piece
of yellow cloth. He was. found before
he was quit? ont of breath. After
that he was more care:.'ully watched.
Two of the white men.. Cahill and
O'Malley. were found gjilty of burg
lary and each was sentenced to two
years. The olher white man was con
victed of h minor crime. The negroes
had been found guilty of burglary and
each get two years.
By the time they had reached Phoe
nix the Indian had apparently giv?n
up the notion of suicide and was a."
cheerful a,s the rest of his companions,
who seemed to think they were going
to a banquet instead of the peniten
tiary. They were taken there last
night.

F. W. Sheridan and Associates Begin
WorK on Rich Mexican Property
F. W. Sheridan, manager of the Ari
zona and Mexico Gold Mining com
pany, left last night '4'or Mexico to
j begin work on the properties of the
j company, which wa-s incorporated in
this city last week. .He carries with
him instructions from President Jo
seph Cope, to let contracts for sinking
2f.O feet on the main ledge of the prop
erty. Mr. Cope leaves for Mexico to
night. Before doing any work, however, an
incorporation will have to be made un
der the laws of Mexico. Mr. Sheridan
took with him proof of the incorpora
tion in this territory and the incoro
oration, in Mexico will be effected by
one of the members of the Arizona in
corporation. Carlos Porr.pa. who is vice
president of Catianea.
Trie property lies thirty miies west of
Cananea. The ledge upon which work
will be begun is four and one-half feci,
wide and average assays from it shnw

rises from this country into Mexico.

Down in Mexico, hr? says, speedy pun
ishment is meted out to the guilty and
the Mexican form of criminal juris
prudence frequently is extolled by
travelers as a system cf quick retribu
tion and remarkable, effectiveness in
the prevention of crime. Here is one
instanca just come to light of the
southern republic's method of bringing
criminals to justice:
In June of IW Chano Rica walked ur
behind a man at Congress. Ariz., and
without warning sent a bullet through
his heart. There were v eye witnesses
to the commission of the crime. itios
fled to Mexico and later admitted kill
ing the man. maintaining that it was
an act of self-defense. During August
a Dcuglas, Ariz., peace officer wired to
Joe Roberts, the sheriff of the county
in which the crime was committed,
slating that Rics was under surveil
lance. Under telegraphic instructions
the p?aee officer secured the arrest of
the fugitive at Agua Prieta, just across
the international line in Mexico.
Armed with extradition papers Sheriff
Roberts, went to Hermosillo where they
were presented to the governor of So
nera. The governor referred him to
the secretary of state, who consume.!
some time in having the papers trans
lated. Then they were referred to the
"Judge of the 'first instance" ot No
gales, Mex.. with Sheriff Roberts as
their custodian. There new transla
tions were had and the case was re
ferred to a judge ofvlower order at
Agua Prieta for investigation at the
place cf arrest and for further trans
lations. The judge of the inferior
court was allowed twenty days in
which to translate his findings to the
superior judgV at Nogales, who was
allowed three days. in which to com
plete the process of digestion and
evolve a plaii of ac tion. The case then
was referred to He'rmo.'ilio, the start
ing point, where it is under tha con
sideration of the governor and the sec
retary. Of course the federal authorities at
Mexico City maintain telegraphic com
munication with their subordi nates
and to complete the extradition the
sheriff may bo compelled to visit the
national capital. He dees not expect
to secure the person cf the prisoner
before the latter part of this month,
making in this instance a four months"

cnte" (toothwater). murders his char
and declares that the prisoner attemt

od of speedy justice. i
