In many quarters there Is strong dis sent from a statement recently marie by Melvill'? E. Stone, of the Associated Ptess, to the effect that "yell-wness" in journalism is a response to the de mands cf feminine readers of newspa pers. There is. in fact, very wide room for doubt us to the correctness of Mr. Stone's view. The Rcchester Demot-r.it ar.d Chronicle directs attention to the fa-t that the big "yellow" papers which make much of scandal and crime also devote a great deal of space to subjects that range from the haimlcs to the wholesome. Much cf their matter may be frivolous, but a good portion of it is both serious and valuable. The aim is to provide something fcr varying tastes and for all sorts and conditions of men and women. There are malo readers of these papers who absorb every detail of every criminal trial as lon-.pletely as des the presiding judge, but who cannot tell you the n';in( of the member of congress fcr the district in which they live. They know the rec ord of every pt ize fighter down to the date and hour tf each of his victories and defeats, but do not know how the president of the United States is eloct ih1. They are walking cyclopedias of s-ports and scandals, but ignoramuses outside of those lines of lnf rrmation. The great majority of female read ers pay no attention to there muttei?. They turn to the pages devcted to fash ions, to the hrme, to personal trial, to theatrical news, to sipned editorials by eminent men and women cf the highest repute: they assimilate a knowleige of etiquette, of how to furnish a cozy orne,-, of v.-hat to feel a babv. of the latest things in fashion, of good things in morals or ethics or sociology, but they may not know whether DatMir use John is a vaudeville performer or a Chicago politician. Very likely a gr.- it '.eal of this reading Is the mere foai.i .of verbiage, and. is detrimental to in clk tual vigor, but i. is at, least clean. If it ere m t. the paper print inc U would lose c;.ste among women. i Hut even if plausibility could b giv en to th" claim that women are respon sible for- objectionable features In newspapers, they must also be credit ed, as the Pittsburg Di-.rp.itch points out. with the prrgress and improve ment in the i rcss during the past naif century. The Dispatch says: "That feminine patronage does not sli;nv!ati the scandalous features of the press, but just the opposite. Is one ot the leading facts of journalism. It may cause inno.'ont gossip and discussion of Trills and furbelows to displace pon-ir-cus discourses on tariff or coinage. Put any newspaper which sought a circula tion exclusively or mainly femininr- by j-ervlii.-r ld h menu of scandals cr hor rors would very prompt i.v be wound ur1 by a receiver in bankruptcy." Tliis undoubtedly is true. We !oo up to women as guardians of the horn", of morality and refinement, cf social paiity and uprightness. Why should ce pretend to look down upon 'hem as i-r. ouragers of the low and the vie ious in the single particular of newspaper reading? It seem'? .xb?urd, does it net? The truth is that women read "yellow" papers in spite of their "yellowness." rot because of it. As a rule, they pick out the good and skKi the bad. This is not a defense of dirt and sen sationalism in newspapers. It i3 oniy a contention that where those qualities prevail they meet not a. feminine de mand but a depraved masculine taste. Ciraft in Advertising. S me of the operations of the adver tising "fakirs" who live by taking ad vantage cf the widespread desire to get something lor nc.thing are djsciibcd by Philip Loiing Allen in thj June Leslie's Monthly. For example, there was the firm, doing business under various names, which offered to pay liberal juices for typewriting done at heme. The only condition was that the work should be done on one of thf; typewriters made by the firm, "as we desire to show by actual woik the pre cision and alignment with which It writes." Incidentally a nominal de posit of $2. HO was required for the ma chine, which was elaborately described in the advertisement. "Now the promoters of this scheme were safe in counting on one fact, that the mental picture conjured up by the word "typewriter" would everywhere be that of a macl'ine costing some where between twenty-five and one hundied dollars. In either case a, de posit of two dollars and fifty cents was a just precauti' n. In either c ase, three cents apiece for short notes without addresses was good pay when paper was furnished free. The typewi iter so glowingly described was u typewriter, but it was toy size. The postal inspec tor who investigated the case, after a practical test, declared that it would be a physical impossibility to wiite five hundred letters c 11 it. The" manufac turers themselves sold this machine) for about forty-eight cents a price rep resenting a margin of prolit entiiely satisfactory to the swindling com pany." The common Idea tf a standard price for a t-tandard article was taken ad vantage of by the cat e: prising gentle man who offered to sell a bicycle for 13.48: "It was :ric kel-platcd, said the adver tisement, had a durable frame, rams' horn handle-bars, und all oilier modern improvements. 'Willi this machine. It went on, 'you will never get into Ircu ble puncturing or cutting your tire.' In short, so tho advertiser enthusiartical ly asserted, the wheel was 'a perfect are warm friends, and lions with Limantour close. That l;o;h cf th. LIFZ SAVED EY SWAMP ROOT.
