An Attempt to Escape from the Ohio
Penitentiary.
Columbus, Ohio, June .13. An attempt
was made by four of tho nine con
demned men at the annex at the pen
itentiary to escape at 1 ot lock this
morning by overpowering the-guard.
The guard was badly beaten, but two
guards frcm one of the balls came to
his leseue and th" pris 1. -rs were forc
ed back into their cells and locked up.
DESIGNS ON A CHURCH.
A Dynamiter's Deadly Purpose Was De
feated. St. I-ouis, Mo., June 13. An attempt
by some unknown person was recently
made to blow up with dynamite the
c hurch of Kt. Anthon, which is in
charge of the Franciscans. The ex
plosive, a stick cf dynamite, was dis
covered under the altar, attached to a
fuse running to one of thr candles. The
inability of an attendant to light this
particular candle led to the discovery
of the fuse and dynamite.
The fuse was so arranged that when
I he candle? had burned for a certain
lime the fuse would have ignited and
caused an explosi' 11, which, because of
the crowded conditio 1 of church at the
time, would not only have destroyed
the building bet would also have caus
