CUR WAtt PAPER STflSK IS REPLETE WITH THE LATEST NOVELTIES AND STAPLES t'.ie old Centennial nine,, from which he is taking ore that' runs 800 ounces in silver aifd 16 '1-2 per cent copper. This is the claim mentioned in lat .week's Silver He.lt. live-sixths intrest i:i which was bought by Judge -Cl. V. Woy and Phoenix parties., The Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting company is drawing all of its supply of clay for converter linms from a clay bed opened some time sincu. near- Schulze's ranch. The clay la o a superior quality for the purpose for which it is used. Formerly day. was brought from Gallup, X. M., at a ost of $7 or more per ton delivered at V.n smelter. The local product co:;ts only $3 per ton, and the expense of obtain ing it will likely be further reduced. S. L. Gibson and C. W. Gibson cer tainly have a winner jn their mine at the head of Pinto creek. For the past , two months they have had a force em ployed drifting and stoping on th-; 200-foot level and making regular ship ments to the Old Dominion smeiter. The ore is so desirable that the Old Dominion pays a better pi ice for it than could be realized by shipping it to El Paso. Superintendent N. S. Bcrrny of the United Globe Mine3 informs us .that there was shipped iast month from the several mines of the company op erated, 3,000 tons of ore, and' this result wan attained without any unusual effort at large production. Most of this ore came from the Gray, Josh Billings and Buffalo, was shipped to the Copper Queen at Bisbee and Douglas, some also going to the Old Dominion. Work it the Gray is at present ccnlined to drift ing at 1140 feet. The ore is chalcopyrite occuring in lenticular form, but as' far as prospected showing remarkable con tinuity. The workings on the Gray are the deepest in the district, and the occurrence of a considerable body of good sulphide ore is regarded as of great importance. Silver Belt. THE GOVERNMENT AND THE FAlrt While the primary object of great in ternational l'airg, such as the .Louisi ana Purchase exposition, is not to make money and return a prcfit to their investors, it Is probable that the complete financial fai'.ure of the1 pres ent enterprise would render it increas ingly difficult hereafter for similar pro jects to induce the federa! government to make them under its protection. Al leady there ?s much public dissatisfac tion over the L.vish sums that have boon appropriated for the St. Louis Tair, and the "loan" of $-1,060,000 .mute by congress at its last session was vc.t ed in the face of a strong and Intelli gent opposition. Each industrial fair of great prpfr tions has cost more to prepare than Us predecessors, and unless each can arouse a greater curiosity in tha pub lic and attract a greater number of patrons than the others did, its Josses must be much greater than their3. It is a serious question whether, this has been done by the St. Louis exposition, certainly it is- not so common a topic of conversation aa wat? the Philadel phia centennial show or the Chicago fair, but it may surpass them in public interest before the gate3 are closed. This lack of interest at present in3i- cates pretty conclusively, however,'! that after the St. Louis fair is ov?r the country will not be ripe fcr another such for years to come. New Vcrk Sun.
