Bryant Umpire Jock Blinkcorn. u A BARN BURNED Two Fire Alarms in a High Wind Made People Nervous. A terrific sand storm visited this city last night about dark, the wind blow ing with considerable severity all even ing. It was a wild night for a fire and when the fire alarm sounded just after the worst of the gale was over a great deal of excitement was created In a very few minutes The Are proved to be a barn belong ing to Eniren Gonzales, which stood near Lincoln street and south Third avenue. Though not a large structure there was danger of the fire spreading to nearby property on account of the high wind. The department made a good run and attached the engine to a plug but there was no water and they had to uncou ple and put their hose in the ditch that runs from the electric light works. Before any quantity of water could be secured the building, which was neith er large nor pretentious, was burned up and fortunately there wa& no spreading of the fire. The origin of the fire was not learned and the only loss of life was the burn ing of a number of chickens and Bel gian hares. Just as the fire company was prepar ing to leave the Gonzales property a second alarm was turned in to the engine house. It registered box 402, but as there Is no such number It was assumed that the fire was at 42. Re sponse was made promptly but no fire was found and the alarm was probably the result of a crossed wire or some other circumstance to which false alarms are so often due. CAPTURE OF A SUSPECT Believed To Be Vicente Franco, the Murderer. Deputy Sheriff Oscar Roberts came in last night with a Mexican believed to be Vincente Franco, the murderer of Francisco Coronado, a Chilean, in this city ten years .sgo. The suspect nays that his name is Antonio Rojo and that he has been working at Con gress for the past five weeks. He said that he went Vj Congress from Can anea and that he has been there ever since with tn3 exception of a week which he and a companion spent in Phoenix, returning to Congress three or four days ago. It was 10 o'clock when he was brought to the city and there was ro one at the jail by whom Franco could be identified, but It will be known this morning whether the Euspect is the murderer. It was announced by the Republican two days ago that Franco had return ed to the city and that he had gone away presumably to Weaver. The next day the suspect was arrested at Con gress by A. Bernal on a telegram from the office of the sheriff. Franco rode into Phoenix on a black horse and he is supposed to have gone out on horse back. This man had no horee at Con gress . y In a general way he answers descrip tions which have- been given of Fran co. The murderer when he was last seen here had on a black hat and trousers and a bfue shirt. The suspect Is similarly diessed. He is about the size of Franco and apparently of about the same age. Some of those who saw Franco after his absence of ten years said that his hair had become slightly gray but there are no gray hairs in the head of the suspect. Walter Card took to the brush yes terday afternoon at a pretty lively gait, mounted on a horse that demonstrated its ability to move some under the sad dle. For some months Tiast he has been employed as -a driver of one of the cty sprinkling carts but for some rea son his work of late hus not been sa tisfactory and George E. Loring, the corral 'boss stopped his pay, whereupon as was expected, he quit work. 1I felt aggrieved, however, at Mr. Loring and yesterday morning, he met him in front of 'the Phoenix bakery and land ed heavily on his head. Mr. Loring though had on a large corpulent cork hi.tt which protected him from Injury. Card withdrew and that was supposed to be the end of it for Mr. Loring had no idea of proceeding against him. But in the afternoon Card had ac cumulated enough steam to renew the assault and appeared at the city corral where he expressed his opinion of Mr. Loring in terms that indicated no em barrassment and elso showed a re markable familiarity Avith English "as .LMJMlyqrcp)MpM II IMmwii.lll.ll LJ, ,n lim EZSSB iESB FRENCH FOR 12 SEE OUR WINDOW DISPLAY J "... y oil she is spoke," by a wild and wooly Texas cowiboy, which class of peopl he asumed to represent. Mr. Lorirrg telephoned to Policeman Moore who responded at once but by the time he reached the corral. Card was putting spurs to his mount. The officer called to him to stop but all the wild rider did was to throw more dust and the last seen of him he was fading away down the Yuma road. A warrant was issued toy Justice Hurnett but no effort was made to fol low him and last night he returned, somewhat pCnltent ar'd. willing to square things up the best way pos sible.
