We often see dairymen and farmers hauling their milk to the creamery, getting: back sour milk, giving their
calves internal, and, if these could speak, they would call them infernal, agonies, and as a result getting a poor calf
and losing about as much on the calf as is made on the butter. Quii this sort of nonsense. Do your own separat
ing and feed the skim-milk to the calf warm-and sweet and raise a good calf. Then make first-class butter and
sell it at the store in the nearest town or ship it, a tub at a time, to the nearest market. This is the final solution
of the dairy problem. '
Now that we have a way of determining cream and butter values and a way of avoiding hauling milk long
distances, and u way of securing sweet skim milk for the calves why stand the imposition?

Clark, recently appointed attorney
general of Arizona:
The news which reached Prescott
yesterday of the elevation of our wor
thy townsman. Hon. S. Cark, to
the distinguished position of attorney
general of Arizona territory, will be
hailed with deiight by ail classes, but
more particularly by those who are
Intimately acquainted with the gen
tleman and know the sterling worth
and capacity for infinite and painstak
ing labor which he has evinced durins
his residence in Yavapai county.
Honor does not always come in due
time and season to those who most de
serve it. but while there is much food
for thought in this direction, it is a
matter for the sincerest congratulation
that the consistent and conscientious
discharge of oblieations and undevia
ting adherence to the path of duty, as

Mr. Clark, have now "received their
reward and that that faithfulness in
the performance of smaller duties has
brought as it always does, sooner or
later. Us inevitable reward.
On the advice of ex-Attorney Gen
eral Kibbey. tendered to Acting Gov
ernor Nicl-ols. Mr. Clark was yester
day chosen to fill the vacant position
of attorney general and we have every
confidence that he will bring to the
discharge of his new duties an intelli
gent and comprehensive knowledge of
territorial legal affairs which cannot
but redound to increased efficiency in
our administrative machinery.
Mr. Clark has for several years past
! been very favorably known as a law
practitioner in the territory, begin
ning his practice at Flagstaff, coming
to Prescott about four years an. I"n
til Dec. Zl of last year he was district
attorney of Yavapai county and hi;?
record in this position will be bard to
eclipse. It can be asserted fearlessly
that he has r.ever permitted anv sel
fish consideration or anv other unto
ward motive to stand in his way when I
a disagreeable duty required to be dis
charged, and the many efforts which
he has made to save the taxpayers of
this county from unjust burdens will
be long and favorably remembered.
There is perhaps no nmre eloquent
example of the virtue of self help to
be found in Arizona today than Mr.
E. S. Clark, and it is with the object
of pointing out this example that we
wish to direct attention to the earlier
portion of Mr. Clark's career. Pour
teen years ago he was a worker in the
ranks of the workers for then he held
the r-osition of foreman in the Journal-Miner
office. He occupied this
position with honor to himself and
profit to the proprietor, but his ex
pansive mind could not be circum
scribed and he was, about the time
mentioned, appointed as supervisor of
the Arizona census.
The successful study of law, and
successive steps ascended up the legal
ladder brought him finally into a lu
crative practice and later events in his
career ?.re too well known to our read
ers to need recapitulation.
Ws wish Mr. Clark every success in
his new sphere of activity and are
satisfied that the present honor has
been well earned and will be but the
forerunner of greater honors to come
in the future.

Sheep and lamb prices lost 20 to GO
cents Monday and Tuesday, on account
of liberal runs at all points, but the
loss was just about made up later in
the week, as the suippiy was short af
ter "Wednesday. The run is g-od at
10,000 head, but the market is steady
and active, with the season's top fig
ures paid for wethers and ewes,
namely $5.00 arul $5.00," respectively.
Yearlings sold at $6. so, and lambs at
$7.65. but neither of those prices are
a full test of the market, as prime
,--tuff would probably command 10
cents more in each class. Snippers
and feeders apparently have confidence
in future prices, as not very much
partly finished stuff came in last week
as might have Leon expected i:i view
of the high prices. Bulk of the salo
are within n. range of r.O to 75 cont.s

tle run was a disappointment last
week after Tuesday, as receipts drop
Iel down below the demand, but it
was of advantage to the market, and
all classes made more 'r less Kain dur
ing the week. The low prices Mon
day held many shippers back, and it
is also becoming evident that the sup
ply of C2ttle now ready for market is
short. Beef steers closed the week
with a little more than Monday's loss
regained, cows and heifers closed 15 to
25 cents above the end of the previous
week; and stockers and feeders made
a sensational finish, a quarter better
than the previous week's close. Beef
steers caused no $;harp competition
during the week, but buyers bid sharp
ly for cows and heifers, and country
buyers were so numerous for stock
ers and feeders that many of them
had to go home v Ithout being able to
get any stuff. Top beef steers were
$5.50, not as good as previous week's
top at J5.75, bulk of steers $4.40"t 5.00,
most of the she stuff sold at $3.25'0
4.01), choice heifers up to $4.50, best
heavy cows $4.-5. Most of the stock
ers and feeders sold between $3.25 'ci

country was very small. The run yes
terday was 8,000 head, market strong
to a shade higher, and prospects for
a good week are promising.
