An old man with a small grip thrown over his shoulder came through this afternoon begging his fare to Prescott. He purported to have come from the Phoenix county hospital, roasted out by the heat. Very few such visitors are seen during the season, owing per haps to the regulations of the club, which are not favorable to peripatetic professionals. Quite enough shoe leather is worn out on these stony slopes by club members and their legitimate guests, so they think. An interesting party of twenty-seven Xavajo children under the care of Su perintendent Goodman, passed through on their way back to the reservation for a third year's vacation. DofQC European, 75c to $2, FRPP in blankets and long hair, etc., felt Im pelled to accompany the party as far a Prescott, and noted with satisfaction the neatly dressed, plump faced boys and girls going home with a fair knowledge of the English language, and the beginnings at least of a civil ized life. . Whatever may be the out come in later years two years and a half of school life with good food and kind treatment will have removed to a very large degree the blighting con servatism which makes a radical change of life for the older generation almost impossible. Needless to say the Indian contingent of the camp was out in force. Being in Prescott at the usual time of day for writing to The Republican it seemed quite natural to drop in here and there inquiring for news. General Manager W. A. Drake accepted the In terruption with a pleasant smile. In regard to the new depot for Prescott he could only say that the road was en gaged in getting the right of way with plenty of breathing space, an item that will be appreciated even in a mountain town where the exhilirating air espe cially at this season of the year seems to make a cubic foot go farther than twice that amount at a lower level. Speaking of the new building at Ash Fork which is to have an arcade run ning for three or four hundred feet, of reinforced concrete, electric lighting, steam heat, a bath for nearly every room of the Harvey house and good toilet arrangements in the station (a long felt want) Mr. Drake remarked: "It will be one of the finest buildings in the southwest," adding after fur ther conversation, "no saloon will be allowed within several hundred feet of the station." We were glad before leaving to ex press the appreciation felt by the Iron Springs people of the new rate which will make the Saturday night "husband train" more popular than ever. Claude Plummer of the Bashford Burmister store reported business quite brisk. Passing down the railroad we noticed the piles of handsome sandstone brick in the yards and at Prescott we found the newly discovered plaster used for their preservation about to be applied to one of the public buildings. Of course, before leaving Prescott one must ride out to Whipple Barracks. Major Foster, the genial officer in com mand, reported life very strenuous, but still had sufficient leisure to show the courtesy to a reporter which is always appreciated. He recalled a visit to the Phoenix Indian school in company with Colonel McClintock, where he received a very favorable impression of the companies inspected. While chatting of the school and barracks a fine Llew ellyn setter entered the room, evidently quite as much at home there as his master, who may Justly feel proud of so fine a specimen of the breed. He was accompanied by a Maltese cat, with which he seemed to be on the friendliest terms. The boys at the Barracks are looking forward with interest to their practice march. They start for Cheyenne about July 10. There are to be seven ma noeuver camps made. up of four, five or six regiments of infantry and cav alry and some artillery, not counting the volunteers. Some figures concerning the improve ments, at present in statu quo, were ffained from a visit to the office of Major Walcott, construction quarter master. Had it been possible to carry out the Frederick H. Barnes contract some twenty-four buildings would now be nearing completion, furnishing ac commodations for four companies of militia. The contract with the San Francisco firm amounted to $275,478. When operations were suspended it had earned of that amount only $40,091.84. In addition to the Barnes contract the books at the office show a plumb ing contract which involves $23,635. on which some work has been done; a heating contract amounting to $14,475, and a contract for electric wiring, run ning up to $4200. Work on these last two contracts is of course held up until the buildings can be completed. The suspension of over $300,000 worth of needed improvements is a matter of general regret but Major Foster assures us that the government having taken over the main contract will proceed to finish the work as soon as the neces sary preliminaries can be arranged. The Congress hotel is finishing a substantial addition and furnishes a substantial and well cooked dinner. E. ROE SHANNON. o A TOBACCO SHIPMENT HELD UP FOR DUTY A Hatter of Valuation Settled Tet terday by Board of Appraisers. A matter in which Wells Fargo & Co. and Sam N. Seip have been intensely Interested for the last six weeks was disposed of yesterday to the satisfac tion of both of them by the board of appraisers of New York. On May 5 Mr. Seip, in something of a hurry, or dered through the express company 175 pounds of tobacco from Balsa Bros., Vera Cruz, Mexico. The tobacco was Hotel Alvarado LOS ANGELES. The duty on this kind of tobacco is thirty five cents a pound and that amount was deposited with the express com pany. The shipment reached the custom house at El Paso on .May 24, where It was held up by the authorities on the ground of unfair valuation, it being held that the tobacco was "wrapper," on which the duty is $1.85 a pound. This made a difference of more than $250 in the duty. On the claim of the custom house authorities it devolved either upon the express company or Mr. Seip to pay it and the ground work was being laid or a law suit between them, since Mr. Seip announced that he would not ac cept the shipment on that basis. The matter was finally referred to the treasury department and the cir cumstances of the case were submitted to the New York board of appraisers. Yesterday Col. Connell of the express company received a telegram from the board saying that the decision had been in favor of the "filler" theory and that duty would be accepted at the rate of thirty-five cents a pound. In the meantime the danger of the law suit had been dissipated, for Mr. Seip had announced that he would abide by the finding of the board. o "PASS THE PIE AROUND." Following Is an open letter from a Pike county candidate: "To the democrats of Pike county: I am again before you asking for the nomination for the office of county clerk, having made an unsuccessful race for the same office four years ago. My motto is, 'Four years is long enough; pass the pie around.' And by this motto I purpose to win or lose; sink or swim; survive or perish. I claim to be as good as any and as well worthy of a good office with a fat sal ary. Will you give Mr. Patterson another four-year run with another $15,000? If you do this and keep it up, where will we end ? I suppose no one will deny that there are a hundred democrats in Pike county who are competent to fill the office of county clerk. At this rate it will take 800 years to get around. How does that suit you fathers who have sons coming on ? Mr. Patterson, I will admit, knows more Latin and Greek than I do, and if the county records were kept in those languages he would be more ca pable, but I know you want the rec- Bad Stomach Makes Bad Blood. The ingredients of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical UUcovery are just such as best erve to correct and cure all such de rangements. It is made up without a drop of alcohol in its composition; chem ically pure, triple-retined glycerine leing used instead of the commonly employed alcohol. Now this glycerine is of itself a valuable medicine, instead of a deleteri ous agent like alcohol, especially in the cure of weak stomach, dyspepsia and the various forms of indigestion. Prof. Finley Kllingwood. M. D., of Bennett Medical College, Chicago, says of it: "In dyspepsia it serves an excellent pur pose. It Is one of the best manufact ured products of the present time in its action upon enfeebled, disordered stomachs; especially if there is ulceration or catarrhal trastriiistcatarrhal inflammation of stomach). H is a mt efficient preparation. Glycerine will relieve many cases of pyrosis (heartburn) and excessive gastric acidity. It is useful in chronic intestinal dyspepsia, especially the flatulent variety, and in certain forms of chronic constipation, stimulating the secre tory and excretory functions of the intestinal glands." When combined, in Just the right propor tions, with Golden Seal root. Stone root. Black Cherrybark, Queen's root. Blood root and M andrake root, or the extracts of these, as In Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, there can be no doubt of its great efricacy in the cure of all stomach, liver and intestinal disorders and derange ments. These several ingredients have the strongest endorsement in all such cases of such eminent medical leaders as Prof. It. Bartholow. M. P., of Jefferson Med ical Colleee. Chicago: Trof. Hobart A. Hare.
